Spain had obviously looked a better side than England on the way to the final, but nevertheless I expected England to be competitive last night in what I assumed would be a 50/50 game, or close to it. In truth, we were outplayed and outclassed and, partisan loyalties aside, it would have been a travesty had Spain not won. It’s easy to blame Gareth Southgate, and perhaps he does share some (or even much) of the responsibility, but the FA need yet again to take a long, hard look at why, despite being pre tournament favourites, we’ve yet again failed to impress when it really matters. The Elite Player Performance Plan is now delivering impressive results while the Premier League offers one of the best and most competitive platforms in world football to develop players, if not the best. We shouldn’t need to rely on “lucky draws” and “the run of the ball” to progress to the later stages of the Euros or the World Cup. I’ve not seen behind the scenes and nor do I have inside knowledge, but if Gareth Southgate has transformed the England setup then that’s a damning indictment of what went before. I don’t believe, even now, that “randomness” adjusted, we’re achieving anything more than par outcomes and it’s entirely possible we’re still underperforming a reasonable expectation. This 100%. Southgate has made significant changes behind the scenes. from what I hear but we have, effectively, won, virtually, every game we should have (all be it some looked a little fortunate) but we have lost as soon as we played a decent side. The draws in 2018 and 2024 kept us away from the major nations until the latter stages of the tournament and we faced France in the Quarter Finals in Qatar, and lost. Previous to Southgate we lost to countries that we shouldn’t have so he has been a step up but, for me, we haven’t achieved more than we should have. Ironically, but for the late goal yesterday we could have held on and beaten Spain, on penalties, but I am, reasonably, content, personally, to play a less than inspiring style of football, and stay in these tournaments to the latter stages, than to blow away one or two teams in the group stages and then go out in the first knock out round.

Fair result, we were second best all over the park. In the final, 100% agreed. Over the tournament: prob not even top 5 tmho. That being said, sorry for my English Charlton fans friends you didn't win it. Its pretty irrelevant how good the team is over the tournament. Italy were far from the best when they beat us in the last final. That one hurt far more than this one personally. I never really thought we’d win this time round. We never truly clicked as a team. Southgate was still making changes to for formation as we went through the tournament.

Walker at fault for both goals.. Agreed, but I also I blame the manager. I don't think we should've played a back three with the pace of the Spanish front line, that thrives on width. You could've parked a ferry in the space Williams found himself in on at least four occasions. We were lucky to finish 2-1. Harry Kane was ineffective. We played 4231?

I have long supported Southgate’s « tournament « football philosophy but it went into overdrive this time around. It became the international version of Stevenage non football. It was shape, shape, shape and just in case you were’nt watching ………..shape again. Actually in very large part it was unwatchable. I very readily concede pre tournament fears were around defence. Guehi & Konsa performed very well. Trippier ultimately resembled a points guard shunting trains in and out of an invisible railway sidings.
Sadly the midfield was a highly confused underperforming mess. Foden was invariably playing an entirely different game to everyone else, whether passing or receiving the ball he was always a half step away from he needed to be. Rice turned into a less productive Ray Wilkins and the final proved a game too far for the promising Mainoo. I am not sure who was more confused about his role - me or Bellingham.
Germany has done nothing for Kanes contribution. Badly missing the runs of Sterling and Rashford he looked palpably off the pace.
I am relieved it is all over. I commend Southgate for taking the squad through to the final with no fit genuine left back and a compromised back 4. Regrettably the recipe he produced did not allow the ingredients he selected to flourish and deliver a banquet we could have fully enjoyed. No Michelin Stars for this Chef and most palpably a major disappointment. I thank him for his undoubted professionalism, his standard of management and indeed for achieving an unprecedented period of qualified success.
Ultimately it all looked and felt very stale. We need a rest and so does he.

Thank you England, for everything' published at 11:09 11:09 BREAKING Gareth Southgate ends his departing words with a message of thanks to the supporters.
He said: "We have the best fans in the world, and their support has meant the world to me. I’m an England fan and I always will be.
"I look forward to watching and celebrating as the players go on to create more special memories and to connect and inspire the nation as we know they can.

Gareth Southgate has also spoken about the players he has managed since being appointed England manager in 2016.
"I joined the FA in 2011, determined to improve English football," he said. "In that time, including eight years as England men’s manager, I have been supported by some brilliant people who have my heartfelt thanks.
"I could not have had anyone better alongside me than Steve Holland. He is one of the most talented coaches of his generation, and has been immense.
"I have had the privilege of leading a large group of players in 102 games. Every one of them has been proud to wear the three lions on their shirts, and they have been a credit to their country in so many ways.
"The squad we took to Germany is full of exciting young talent and they can win the trophy we all dream of. I am so proud of them, and I hope we get behind the players and the team at St. George’s Park and the FA who strive every day to improve English football, and understand the power football has to drive positive change.
"My special thanks go to the backroom staff who have provided the players and me with unstinting support over the last eight years. Their hard work and commitment inspired me every day, and I am so grateful to them – the brilliant ‘team behind the team’."

Be interesting to see who’s next. I for one do not favour a move for Howe

I'd take Klopp but I doubt he'd join - Howe I'd be happy with as he likes a high press and attacking football and prefer over Potter and defo a no to Carsley, Gerrard, Lampard and Pochettino

Nothing will change until the FA appoints a manager who prioritizes selecting a team that suits a system rather than choosing players based on their names and trying to fit them into a system. This requires a courageous manager who is willing to leave out one or two big names for the benefit of the whole team.

I think everyone pleased to see the back of Southgate should remember that old chestnut….. be careful what you wish for……the incoming will no doubt be a yes man rather than maybe the right man for the job..…..🤔🤔🤔🤔…..Lee Carsley will no doubt be considered….

So where does that leave us? 🤣🤣🤣 Probably struggling to get out of the group stages of tournaments, if we even qualify. Do we all remember when people thought that Sven-Göran Eriksson had taken us as far as he could and Steve McClaren came in and lasted eighteen matches and failed to qualify for Euro 2008.

"Be careful what you wish for " is a counsel of despair and inaction. None of mankind's achievements would have been possible without people prepared to take risks and wish for something. Of course things can go wrong but "he who hesitates is lost".

Just glad to see the back of him tbh. Can't say I enjoyed watching a single game, except maybe first half against the Dutch. Getting to a final and not enjoying it says it all really, he made basic errors and was always too reactive, second half against the Dutch being an example, they added a midfielder and it stifled us, but we ploughed on anyway until very late. Yes he got some results, but not against anyone we shouldn't have beaten anyway with the respective teams lined up. I just couldn't see a style or formation that made me want to watch. It was dour saved by a few moments of brilliance.
I just hope he realises his dream to take over the stripey soppy nigels. He took three of their players along and despite the plaudits for guehi, he was always a mistake waiting to happen every game, indeed he was at fault for at least one goal and could have been more, konsa did better against the Dutch tbh. Then Eze being played ahead of Gordon sums him up. We didn't even get to see the third nigel, what was the point, but chose to leave grealish behind who can change games!!!
Cheerio sir nigel of the nonces.
