We fell off the cliff when we let the 2-0 lead slip at home against Cambridge in the final moments. Yeah exactly. That was december 9th. The problem was that the SMT (and us!) wanted stability. We've not had any managers last recently. That had to play a factor. The fact that they wanted stability with the wrong man is another matter entirely. The other issue was the fact it was December when we fell off the cliff. January was just round the corner. It feels like Appleton took the job with the agreement that investment was needed and January was where this was starting. So they also wanted to give Appleton his new signings. Essentially terrible timing. I don't think the SMT expected Appleton to fail so completely and utterly. Without a whimper. If this had happened a month earlier or if we hadn't already sacked Holden, then we would never have let Appleton anywhere near the January window. He'd have gone a month or so before. Either way, hopefully the tide is turning and we're on the up. Lets retain our league one status and forget about this season and Appleton ever being in charge (if only).

SMT are standing by Scott 100%. Comes as no surprise . They’re all in it together . It would appear that way for us looking in from the outside. Usually new owners search and appoint an SMT assuming that they are new to the industry that is English pro football but in this case a group of four have created for themselves an SMT and have gone about finding owners who will fund the club including the SMTs remuneration packages and any success bonuses down the line. Although unusual the SMT may still be found out as duds as the owners are very unlikely to show loyalty to their managers if targets are not achieved … I think we can safely assume that relegation to Div 2 was not a target!

Although unusual the SMT may still be found out as duds as the owners are very unlikely to show loyalty to their managers if targets are not achieved … I think we can safely assume that relegation to Div 2 was not a target! Of course relegation wasn't an objective! There's a remarkable amount of hindsight being shown... And many said nothing of the sort at the time. If I recall correctly, mid December people were talking about the forthcoming January window. And halfway through January Occam’s Razor was giving a standing ovation to the SMT and Scott as they signed Coventry and the rest. We appear to have a manager who can get this squad to win the odd game. Who knows what our side might look like by September. Nor which SMT and senior figures hold what responsibilities. As posted before, at the end of the season the owners will have much to digest. They might then assess where we are, where we want to be and how to get there. As Bertrand Russell once stated: "The problem with the world is that the fools and fanatics are so full of certainty, while wiser people are full of doubts."

Micheal Beale sacked this afternoon, after only 9 weeks and 12 games in charge of Sunderland. Just goes to show you can act swiftly when you realise you have made a bum appointment. Wow. He's not lasted very long anywhere has he?

With the upturn under the excellent Nathan Jones what's the opinion now on Andy Scott?
Coventry looking good after struggling in his first few games...not easy starting in a relegation battle.
Small another good one and others inproving too. Bakinson good at Cheltenham.

Don’t forget he signed Fiorini & Ladapo in January as well, to go with his 15 other honking signings. It’s very refreshing that Nathan Jones is now front and centre of the club’s external Comms, and not Scott. Genuine passion & rapport with our fanbase, rather than the contrived “on the grass “ sound bites from a bloke nicking a living in football. I’ll start to feel the club is truly heading in the right direction, and back to where we belong, our natural home of the Championship, when the dud SMT join Aneke in heading out of the door in May.

Small another good one and others inproving too. Bakinson good at Cheltenham. I agree that the players we signed in January look better now than they did when Appleton was managing them. Having said that, all the players look better now - including some of the summer signings. This could be due to a better system that suits the players and/or just that some of them have now settled in. What is not in doubt is that the success rate of signings under Andy Scott looks much better now than it did in December or January. Clearly some of the players look better than others but that will always be the case. What we don't know, and probably never will, is just what impact various individuals have had in the various signings. There are those on here that will insist that everything they don't like is all Scott's fault and everything they do like is all down to someone else - presumably Nathan Jones, at the moment. Some people become so entrenched in having to be right, all the time, that they will ignore all the evidence and/or make up rubbish excuses so that they can continue to argue their point - often long after it is, absolutely, clear to everyone else that they were wrong all along. I find it best to look at the evidence and be willing to change my view, where appropriate, but I tend not to, aggressively, tell others that they are wrong so it makes it easier for me to admit when I am.

Your reference to Chuks Aneke is somewhat unfortunate. You were adamant several months ago that he should be paid off, despite a number of people arguing that doing so would not deliver any cost savings and that retaining him was a free option. That option has already paid dividends and may continue to do so between now and the end of the season. I don’t understand this constant need to find someone to blame and “punish”. Fergie #

Fergie # We are thankfully a broad church Mundell , it’s what makes ITTV such an interesting read. I don’t understand the need to explain relatively simple issues in 8 paragraphs, or to find ever more torturous ways of excusing the poor performance of the SMT, but there you go. You have to factor in the impact that a high earning and clearly unreliable player would have on the rest of the squad.

History is written by the victors and if we now end the season strongly the player trading activity since SE7 completed their purchase will be seen in a very different light. It seems to me that two things are already very clear. First, the January window was much more successful than that in the summer and it can’t be a coincidence that SE7 had been able to plan for January, but not the summer, and may well have had an “aligned” manager/head coach to work with in January, unlike in the summer. Second, our permanent signings have been much more successful than our loans with the latter looking increasingly like low cost, low risk trials. I guess we’ll see. As I see it, your last sentence is on the money.

I have to admit, Ladapo apart, were we, me especially, a little bit premature writting Scott and his new signings off?
In terms of the back four and Connor Coventry I would say most certainly yes and I don't mind eating a bit of humble pie for my input.
I think we do need another right back as cover but overall I think iof we sign Small on a perm and keep what we have. we will have one of the best defensive units in the division next season.
Coventry is now improving himself too and starting to look Cullenesque. The only mistake and I knew he would be as I said on here many times was Ladapo. He's been poor so far but let's be thankful for small mercies, he almost signed on a perm but for a last minute glitch.

Agree Reams. I’ve been very critical of Scott and still think he’s messed up in Jan with some gaps in our creativity. However, the signings have been very good after they have gotten some match fitness.
We have enough to stay up this year, which was all January was going to be about post-Appleton’s ‘legacy’. We have time to finesse the squad in the summer. It’s looking like we have a good core of players.
I’ve not written Ladapo off yet. Still looks off the pace for me. I haven’t decided if that’s fitness or age yet!
You think we need another RB in addition to Ramsay and Tennai? With REG as cover also?

I don’t think that suits Ladapo . Let’s not forget he was in a cultured promotion winning team when he scored his 17 last season.. he wasn’t scrapping for 2nd balls. Forgetting that, he doesn’t seem to jump and his work rate isn’t good. Is he a bad signing or just someone that hasn’t worked out.

At present, the biggest thing we lack is a decent attacking midfielder joining the club; all the forwards, including Ladapo, would benefit from a midfielder who can run forward with the ball and take people on, opening up gaps in the opposing team's defense.

I think it was too early to criticise Scott considering we had a awful manager and most of these players we signed hardly played any games this season so it’s going to take time for them to get up to speed. Curbs and Nathan Jones touched on that as well. Nathan Jones has so far transformed this team and we look a completely different side now so massive credit goes to him on this. Our defence has been a lot better under his regime and I’ve been extremely critical the way we’ve defended this season as well.

Can you imagine if Scott turned up in a pair of salmon pink chinos to a match? The hatred and abuse would be off the charts knowing some in the fan base have such a pathological hatred for anyone associated with that clothing choice and just can't see past it...

The stadium should all wear salmon pants Think the team should have a salmon away kit... All the anger and bile and numerous spleen ventings would help create an intimidating atmosphere in every away ground!

Scott’s job is not only on transfers, but more importantly on the total reconstruction of the club which is in a shocking state. I am told he is doing well on that front with the. Board very happy with what he has achieved to date. Running a football club successful is not only about the manager and players.

Interesting feedback, many thanks for sharing would be interesting to know what exactly he has achieved regarding the restructure which has resulted in this recognition from the board. As supporters we maybe don’t see some of the good stuff that he does, we just see him recruiting a load of players who have either been deemed not good enough and returned to their clubs or not fit enough to play or players who are currently not deemed good enough to be part of the normal match day squad under NJ……The loan recruitment process this season has been a complete and utter disaster Maybe then his skill set is more aligned to the restructuring of the club and he should leave the recruitment side to NJ moving forward

I’d be interested to know in that case what Andy Scott has achieved to date ? My information is that in addition to poor player & managerial appointments, he’s repeatedly upset dressing room morale at Sparrows Lane with his arrogance, & Jack the Lad persona. One high profile player has called him an “utter bellend” (I know the identity of the player). Scott also handled the player bonus issue very badly, so in the round I’d be genuinely interested to understand what it is he’s done well.

Yes agree Razor, you are right, his player interaction was/ is NIL. The season started off badly with the bonus issue. Since NJ’s arrival Scott I believe has little if no interaction with the players. I was trying to be diplomatic!!
