Does anyone know when we are likely to see the retained list? Nathan Jones said that the players would all know by today. I was under the impression that players are rarely at the training ground much after 3pm.

I would imagine news will filter out later tonight or tomorrow morning…….There are quite of few clubs in our division who have already released their retained lists

Charlton made a number of contract offers to George Dobson pre and post Christmas. The midfielder has signed a pre-contract agreement with Hungarian club Fehérvár.
The following players, whose contracts are set to expire this summer, have not been offered a new contract:
Richard Chin, Michael Hector, Diallang Jaiyesimi, Jack Payne, Terell Thomas, Lewis Ward.
The following players, whose contracts have expired, have not been offered a new contract:

Lovely. That's exactly what I would've done. Not sure if that's a good thing or not!
Jack Payne will be great for any L2 team who gets him.

As expected all the noise around Dobson was just that. He gave 100% for us but when it came to it he made a decision to leave for a better contract. I have no issue with that and wish him all the best.
I predict that we will finish higher than 16th next season so the impact of him leaving will never be proved to have been negative. I'm sure that he will win the fans over in Hungry with his 100% commitment, and he will net more income, so everyone's a winner.

I'm presuming that Derby County have taken up the option of buying Corey Blackett-Taylor after his loan, or had that been sorted previously?

I hope Dobson and his young family enjoy their time in Hungary not my cup of tea , and I wouldn’t be surprised if they are having second thoughts now. He perhaps should have waited just a few more weeks back in January and things might have turned out differently for him, you never know he may be able to buy himself out of that contract.

So our current squad looks like this then:
Goalkeepers: Ashley Maynard-Brewer Harry Isted
Right Backs: Kayne Ramsay Nathan Asiimwe Tennai Watson
Centre Backs: Lloyd Jones Lucas Ness Macaulay Gillesphey Rarmani Edmonds-Green Zack Mitchell
Left Backs: Tayo Edun Thierry Small
Central Midfielders: Aaron Henry Conor Coventry Conor McGrandles Karoy Anderson Scott Fraser Terry Taylor
Wingers: Tyreece Campbell
Strikers: Alfie May Chuks Aneke Daniel Kanu Miles Leaburn
Not a huge number of senior players (15). Quite a lot of Academy players make up the total squad number (23 total).
I'd expect us to Sell Fraser, Henry (maybe loan but has he done enough?), McGrandles at least.
We have 3 right backs, so presumely we either sell or loan one out.
You'd expect we need to sign at least 1 winger, if you want to keep TC as an option. He can change a game with his speed and dribbling. Got the second most assists behind CBT, despite not playing for a large chunk of the season.
We certainly need a lot of players!

I wouldn't be surprised if Dobbo returns to the EFL in January, but I'm hoping it's not with us. No disrespect to him, but it would show our summer rebuild hasn't worked if there's a space for him to return to.
PS the reason I think he'll be back is he has previous. He signed a permanent deal with Sparta Rotterdam a few years back, but in the very next transfer window he was back at his previous club Walsall.
"It was my agent who first told me Rotterdam were interested and I've always been a person who tries to take risks and try something different. But I got dropped, then the manager went and circumstances changed. When the gaffer here [Walsall] said he wanted me back, it was a no-brainer."

Lovely. That's exactly what I would've done. Not sure if that's a good thing or not! Jack Payne will be great for any L2 team who gets him. Here's the thing: amongst all of the opinions, fantasies and conspiracies, when it comes to predicting what's going to happen at CAFC, Occam's Razor is often the most appropriate take! Search for explanations constructed with the fewest number of elements / factors. In this case there's a total of 14 players leaving, because the manager and club are clear that next season requires a major uplift. Only Dobson and two centre backs played regularly under Nathan Jones these last few months. And we were roughly mid-table. When we consider that the eight Academy players don't count towards SCMP and that a few might go out on loan, we clearly have a lot of budget to spend and a fair few vacancies to fill. Nothing announced should come as a surprise. Nothing in the club's narrative nor our requirement for a quality spine has changed. New keeper, new centre backs, new central midfield and new strikers. We don't know how we will compete with other clubs for new talent, nor the style Jones proposes to play. But it's 100% clear that he's looking for at least six players who will slot into our first XI londonnewsonline.co.uk/sport/nathan-jones-built-a-luton-legacy-now-summer-of-transfer-and-squad-construction-awaits-at-charlton-athletic/

We certainly have a huge rebuild on our hands, when you consider we need to get rid of some we have kept as well. Nathan will do well to get away on holiday over the summer! He might be taking some calls if he does...

Not quite as comprehensive a clear out as I was expecting. No real surprises there, apart from arguably Dobbo.

Don’t think there are any real surprises here and we won’t really know what the decisions announced today actually mean until we see what happens next.
I had felt there was a possibility that either Hector or Thomas might be retained as squad members, especially if we are going to play 3/5 at the back though the fact Ness was offered a new contract perhaps made that less likely. There are positive and less positive interpretations of this. The positive interpretation is that we’re planning to sign three senior centre backs who along with Jones, Edmonds Green and Gillesphey would be expected to cover our forty six league games. Less positively, it might be that the club expects Ness, and even Mitchell, to be get material league minutes. We’ll see.
When making their released lists public some clubs also indicate which of their under contract players are available for transfer. We haven’t done that obviously and yet it’s very likely that some of those players listed as “under contract” will be available for transfer or will be loaned out if there are no takers for a permanent deal. The fates of the likes of Edun, Henry, Maynard Brewer, McGrandles, Fraser, Taylor, and even Watson, will tell us a lot more about the plans for the season once they become clear.
Now that the departure of Dobson has been confirmed it is even more obvious that the biggest hole in the squad is in central midfield. How this glaring weakness is addressed will tell us a lot about our chances next season.
It’s perhaps not that likely that any of the players who’ve been on loan will be offered permanent deals, but today’s news doesn’t confirm that one way or another and given the black hole in our midfield it’s not out of the question we’ll eventually sign Bakinson and/or Camara, even if only as squad members. Again, only time will tell.
Finally, it would be wonderful if our first signing of the summer is Thierry Small. Great news he’s been offered a long term contract. Let’s hope he signs it.
PS While posting this I’ve been asked by Statler to pass a message to Derek Xg Nimmo. Statler says, “I know you’ve gone all Gas and Gaiters again Derek, but FYI I can confirm that I had no involvement whatsoever in your excommunication and was as surprised as anyone when you were defrocked. I see you’re now delivering your sermons in a new Parish and clearly feel able to say what you really think. No problem whatsoever with that but some might say there is an element of QED in there. Confessionals are another option. Anyway, enjoy next season.”

What numpty gave Henry a long contract?? Holden? That central midfield Puh! I think that midfield will look dramatically different come first game of the season…… I can see further departures coming via sales or loans including, Fraser, Mcgrandles, AMB and Taylor……I don’t think NJ is totally convinced either about Watson or Tayo so it wouldn’t surprise me to see them go as well….. I also think he likes a youth development project so I can see the academy kids in and around the squad but not starters to the level that Anderson and Kanu have done this season……….as part of the 8-8-8………..In Anderson, Ness, Kanu, Assime, Campbell and Mitchell and Henry NJ has confirmed that any signings we make will be first team starters as we have plenty of squad players as in the academy kids…..I said previously that I thought we would have 8-9 new starters for the first game of the season and I still stand by that……

The likes of Hector and Thomas (most people expected us to offer at least one of them another year) are the surprising part. We released 14 of the 15 players we could have done (having already said we'd extend Small) so I genuinely don't know how much bigger a cull you were expecting!

When you say the players retained, do you mean Campbell and Small? They are the only players we have retained. All the others are under contract and, even if we wanted to move them on, they can't join another club until the transfer window opens in June. Even if we were going to pay them off the players have to agree to leave.

Nathan wants 8 new players. That is a third of the 8-8-8 so to accomodate them it is fairly obvious that space will have to be freed up.
