Reckon we will (and should) take the year option on Lewis Ward.
It's good to have a third choice keeper who can contribute in other ways, which Ward (with his experience of youth coaching and degree in sports journalism) offers more than any other third keeper we're likely to attract.

More players than you think will be leaving the club this summer. We will listen to offers for the majority of those still in contract. Nathan wants a major overhaul and has a nice sum at his disposal to bring in who he wants. It's going to be an exciting summer! To be fair, when I've seen lists for other fans on the players which we SHOULD keep. It's not a long list. Mine is potentially longer than most: May Leaburn Coventry REG Gillesphey (Squad) Jones Small Ramsay The club will listen to offers but who will make them. Unless the player and their agent generates some interest I can't see many moving on. So on top of those listed above I'd add another seven or eight: - one of the existing keepers to become second choice - keep one out of Hector, Thomas and Ness - Edun and Watson stay as cover - Anderson stays alongside Coventry but brand new, high quality midfielders required - Aneke stays - perhaps Kanu goes out on loan? That still leaves room for three Academy graduates and six quality signings. The owners want this. The SMT want this. The fans all want this. Nathan Jones' reputation and career rests upon replicating his success at Luton so he will want even more!

Unless I am mistaken I didn’t see Pompey, Bolton or Derby integrate 3 Academy graduates into their squads this season, they just brought in the quality required to challenge…..Which is what we want…..If we have a lurking potential Paul Gasgoine hidden in our academy then I am all in for his inclusion…..but until then do what Pompey did last summer…….

Pick a club who have been promoted already, then instruct everyone to do whatever they did. Makes it all sound so easy, doesn't it? Except that fails to recognise that CAFC will never be a replica of Portsmouth, AND that nine or ten other clubs will be competing for the top six, of which at least half will have similar or greater resources than us. No, I think if we're serious about analysing and understanding the challenge, we need to scratch a little deeper. Lift the bonnet on Portsmouth's success and we find that they too sacked a manager at the end of a January window. They finished ninth last season, whereas we are roughly ninth in the form table. But what type of football have they been playing and who did they acquire / what did they do to convert a 9th place into automatic promotion. How many players out of contract last summer, how many sold / loaned out? At least we have plenty of space about to appear. And finally, Academy players do NOT contribute to the SCMP calculations so it's a free hit. If they're good enough, play them. If they can provide cover then put them on the bench. And if it's better to loan them out to League Two then do that. But those decisions require careful consideration. They can make or break a kid's career. Our reputation as one of the best Academies in the country has been built around hard work and a commitment to player development plus a pathway to the first team squad. Kill that and you kill any incentive for kids and parents to sign up to us for seven years! Of course Brentford chose that path. But Brighton certainly did not. Therefore, on reflection I make you wrong about not taking three or four Academy graduates into the first team squad. Who knows how good they will be in a year or two? But let's continue the discussion about how the CAFC squad can be improved.

Our current form is identical to that of Portsmouth 12 months ago with 19 points from our last 11 matches. So far so good. What I'm saying is that what happens next is a tad more complex than "do a Portsmouth". But the released list end May will probably be 90% agreed by most fans. Nathan Jones has talked of getting players in early, so let's see what happens in June / July.

Yes…….but only if they are bloody good enough, you don’t just put a number of academy kids in the first team squad to pad the numbers or try and make the academy look good……The academy has produced the Konsa’s Gomez’s and Shelvey’s, all these players worthy of their place in the first team squad, sorry but I can’t put Anderson or Kanu in that bracket yet and I just don’t think either them or Ness are ready yet to be part of a promotion winning team, just my opinion, I am sure there will be many who will disagree with me…. You talk about doing a Portsmouth like it is some remarkable feat never to be repeated and definitely not by us….We’ll a certain Chris Powell did it 10 years ago by recruiting wisely with a decent enough budget, similar really to what Pompey did last summer and good luck to them.……. I doubt our budget was way off Portsmouth, they just went in early with intent and brought in streetwise quality players to get them promoted We thought the best way was the build slower bringing in loan kids etc……. Personally I think we will have a decent enough budget this season to be competeing at the top and also think we have the right man steering us to bring the right quality players in…….I just can’t see NJ waiting around from some Championship Prima Dona waiting to see which club will pay him the most on transfer deadline day Again I am always happy to debate in a respectful way I just disagree with all this build slower with academy kids and see where we are in May/ June /December comments….…..We could go round and doing in circles on this but as I said we will have to agree to disagree on this…..All about opinions….

If you mean we need 3-4 academy players introduced each year who play a significant role in the first team squad, then I would disagree. However, if you mean they can 'step up' to the squad, go out on loan and/or are 4th/5th choice (very unlikely to play much), then it's possible. I don't see many in the current u21's which are knocking on the door showing they are ready to step up. We also already have quite a few academy players in the squad. We have: Leaburn, Kanu, Anderson, Asiimwe, Mitchell (when he returns), Ness (Contract ends this summer), Chin (Contract ends this summer) and Aaron Henry. So we actually have 8 exactly. Chin likely going. Ness quite likely as well. Potentially a year deal and a loan to see if he kicks on again? Is Henry good enough? If not, he may be on his way out. Mitchell hasn't been pulling up tree's out on loan either. So we could have 3/4 spots open. However, when you look at how much those players have taken part this year. It's not an issue to me if we 'promote' 3/4 from the academy as I don't think they will feature much. I would also imagine less game time for some of the academy players who have played a bigger role this year. I think our injuries and squad strength have played a big part in this. Plus of course the poor performances of loans players. So I'd imagine their game time will naturally decline, assuming we strengthen the team. I know some are not keen on this 888 idea, but I don't personally see an issue with it. We just need to fill more slots of the first 8!

Nathan wants a major overhaul and has a nice sum at his disposal to bring in who he wants. With all due respect Reams, they have been feeding you that line since they arrived last summer and the accounts confirm that we have actually made money on transfers. None of the expensive players, that they have told you we were going to sign, have ever materialised and the club hasn't even, officially, confirmed making bids for any of them. Call me a cynic, but it's interesting that as soon as season tickets go on sale they (and I assume Methven) start telling you, again, that they are going to spend a lot of money. I know someone has to go first, and show commitment, but for many, I think the club need to actually spend some cash before they can expect many of those, that have felt lied to for the last few seasons, to buy a season ticket. Other than that it is good news that they are 'willing' to spend a lot of money but if they are going to insist on only offering half what a player is worth I suspect that that they will still have the cash come September, and there will be another list of players that we were, apparently, in for, that went somewhere else. As I say, this is not a dig at you Reams but I am getting more and more frustrated on the club using fans on message boards to issue PR statements that they can distance themselves from later - especially when all the messages are about what they are going to do and little of it happens.

Whilst I get that people will be pleased for a home grown youngster to be rewarded in this way. The fact that Lucas can't get a game ahead of Thomas and Hector, both error prone and hopefully to be replaced next season, makes me think that this is not a step forward for the club.

Agree Ness is not good enough at the moment, but he is still only 22yrs old and had something about when he first came into contention. I think he has suffered from a lack of confidence due to our bloody useless defence and playing alongside one or two dipstick CBs. Would make sense to put him out on loan for six months and then review.

Also, as it’s an extension, I assume that the wages are low so it’s not too much of a gamble.

But over 21 so counts towards SCMP.

So we currently have eight Academy lads in the squad, none of whom eat into SCMP budget. And one from every year group might go onto become a star? The fact is that if they don't play 40-50 mens' games by age 20/21 then they are unlikely to make it, whether that's with us or elsewhere. So the likes of Anderson, Kanu, Asiimwe and Leaburn have had some of that exposure and decisions need to be made about our squad AND their careeers. Put another way Small went through a similar journey elsewhere and some wrote him off! Having thought about it, aucklandaddick and I appear to be talking at cross purposes. Having eight Academy players in the squad will be based on merit AND their career development. But has no impact upon budgets or recruitment over the summer. Maybe in previous years but not this time. The only area that the decision makers need to consider in depth wrt Academy players is what contribution might be expected of Kanu and Leaburn. They will both be 20 next season plus Leaburn's contract expires summer 2025. What do we actually need up front (and in midfield) to raise our creativity to a competitive level?

I think Leaburn can contribute enough to justify a place in the squad - probably the starting eleven, of a team pushing for promotion. I'm not sure that Kanu is there yet. I'd be tempted to put him out on loan so that he can play 35 games next season. In truth I think we should have done that with Campbell this season and that may well have put his career back a year - or worse, might mean that he won't achieve as much in the game as he might have done.

I'd be tempted to put him out on loan so that he can play 35 games next season. In truth I think we should have done that with Campbell this season and that may well have put his career back a year - or worse, might mean that he won't achieve as much in the game as he might have done. I agree, Leaburn is the only academy player at present ready to be part of a promotion chasing side, I think NJ will keep Anderson around the first team squad rightly or wrongly as he seems to rate him and I think Assime and Kanu should both go out on season loans, both have the potential to do really well in the game but they need regular first team football which I don’t think they will get with us next season…..Loaning youngsters out such as Scott Parker back in the day never hurt him or us…….. I think Campbell will be offered a new deal and again should go out on loan to play regular football….if he signs again for us…..

The only caveat to sending all the youngsters out on loan is that we will have some games in the Pizza Cup (or whatever it is called these days) and will need to have players available to play in that.
On that subject I would like us to take it seriously this season. There is a very real chance of getting to a Wembley final and I would like the day out.
I'm not as fussed about the League Cup or the FA Cup as we are never going to make it to a final, but we could win the Pizza Cup and it gives us something to be interested in after February when we find ourselves well out of the race for a top six finish.

All well and good but i recall us playing the kids in the pizza cup earlier in the season when Crawley Town stuck 4 past us and their journeyman centre forward made our Centre backs ( including Ness) look dreadfully poor……..That was a pretty galling game to watch and it didn’t give me that much confidence in our back up string of players

Seem to recall seeing the SMT there so they watch the same games! There were of course other cup games with different performances - a very good game vs Villa U21 for example. And just as we hold this conversation, Ness is awarded an extension. Only a month to go until the release / retained list announced.

I suspect that they will tell the players as soon as the season finishes - which is fair, in my opinion as they need to find other clubs/employment. With social media I can't believe that we won't know within a few days of the players being told. Some might be offered something and we will have to wait to see if they take up the offer but those going will probably be in the public domain within a week of the season finishing. Like others I suspect that there will be quite a few leaving.

Just wanted to flag up how disappointed I've been in Freddie Ladapo.
I for one thought he was going to be a good signing, and hungry looking for a possible next destination as Ipswich close in on a place in the Prem.
Where has the Freddie who was at Rotherham gone? Seemed a player there,or was it just because they seemed to do well at this level?

And Nathan Jones' post match comments about changing personnel were somewhat telling. So yes, we might see a club statement early May. And most of the decisions will be uncontentious. There are usually a handful who are made offers and I for one hope that Hector is one of those. For he's played well, and thatcwill be one less to recruit... one less risk.
