The writing on the pre season wall is that the Pompey US owners have decided that they will not bet the farm in order to avoid relegation. Financial prudence is the name of their game and the gap between tier 2 and 3 is becoming as wide as the gulf between tier 1 and 2.
They have been dealt a poor hand as far as Colby Bishop is concerned.

What a different feeling after that and no injuries according to NJ. Looked like Pompey may have picked up a couple today, usually us so a refreshing change.

I feel a lot better after today, but as I wasn't overly down after Wimbledon, I'm not gonna lose it after today. Wigan will be a different proposition next week, but it feels as if NJ is getting the team he wanted up and running, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

For me just as important as goals was the clean sheet. Good to see defenders knowing their job and showing some anticipation. concerns are Coventry and his poor ability to hold off an opponent, Ahadame looks light weight knocked off the ball to easily looks for the ref to give the foul to much. He reminds me of Kanu at the end or 2023 season and early 2024. Also still to many long passes from midfield poor.
But more positives than negatives in that game.

Having not watched the game I find it a bit dissappointing to hear that Ahadme looks light weight. I have read elsewhere that he holds his own in a more subtle way.If anyone saw Morocco saw the opening match in the Olympics Morocco V Argentina where Morroco won and easily held there own against the more illustrious opponents, One can see how Ahadme is in good company I am also pleased that he is a more of an import than the usual Brittons recycled year after year Usually from the illustrious footy taems from the top of Div 2 To the bottom of the Champoinship. That in most cases only sees the team ,only just recycle, to maintain a 'steady as you go position'Rarely pushing on to promotion. There can be some shrood and positive buying though and lets hope in our case NJ has done well
IMO,its buying in the more wide spread market, that sorts the men out from the boys ,and as Ahadme surely was originally in this category.lets hope it works for us.There are some great bargains from lets say .the lesser leagues in S America And Central America Spanish ,Italian and German second tier, and N Africa. Perhaps the Caribbean too.But perhaps the scouting net of ours. doesn't stretch this far ,unfortunately. So the easier approach is to seek players from British stock, in our lower Divisons
The Australian A League has a spattering of foreign players in each team, for obvious reasons.Like Tolgay Arselan. who has just moved on from Melboune City, and Victory have Zinedine Machach. Both exellent midfielders, that score goals.I wonder if our scouts bothered to look around Slovenia, Croatia, and Serbia. For goal scoreing MFs?
I am sure the Charlton,'bean counters',are hoping for a killing on Ahadme down the track, like thay did with May. A player, who IMO,we should have kept, to fight for the shirt,in a serous promotion challenge,as a squad player. But money is money, making promotion that much more difficult. I am now beginning to believe, we now have enough craft, and with accompanying graft, we can make that dream come true.Injuries to one side

Personally didn’t think Adhadme was light weight, I thought he put himself about well. Yeah agree, he didn’t give those Pompey defenders a moments piece and was at them at all the time…He did look a little bit loose with his hold up play at times but that will come with game time its going to be interesting who gets the nod up front next Saturday

I had been uncertain about Ahadme, but yesterday he took the pain, competed, found a team mate when he had the chance, and was on hand to score. I feel more encouraged about him.

I know we have done this one to death but he put a transfer request in as his family had already moved north….regardless of all the noise about whether Jones wanted him or not he wanted to move………Whats the point of keeping a player who clearly wanted to move…..Same scenario with Fraser and I would imagine he will be on his toes this week via a loan…..the disappointing aspect will be how much of the loan wages we pay….. The sooner we offload Fraser, Ness, and probably Edun the quicker we can bring Potts or a new keeper in….

I think he will become a fans favourite just through his work rate alone…..Him and Godden will press the fuck out of opposition keepers & defences…..in fact our team press yesterday was one of the best I have seen for quite a while…..

Could be a rogue shout this but I think Anderson could suprise many this season. Obviously on paper we all felt Coventry docherty and berry was the best midfield 3 but when we played that against Wimbledon it didn’t look great. I know it was only one game but yesterday I felt Anderson helped provide a bit of balance in the middle yesterday and complimented the other two. Sometimes not always about playing the best 3 but the most balanced 3. I could be wrong tho.

Same with Campbell and Kanu, and I can also see Zach Mitchell staying around. Hopefully we can add Leaburn to that group soon. There’s no stand out like a Gomez or Lookman but they can all play a part in a good season with the right management and coaching. Look at the difference in Campbell compared to after Appleton had knocked the confidence out of him. It’s easy to underestimate what energy and effort add to a team vs technical ability but as you say the balance has to be right. Anderson and Kanu add a lot of it alongside their other strengths and are still improving as players. I don’t think we’ve seen the best of any of this group yet.

Didn't get the chance to see the game yesterday, but looking at these highlights, there are few good signs of neat play. Looks like all of our dangerous situations were created down either side with our wing backs. They're going to be a huge part of how NJ wants to play so good to see both Ramsay and Edwards can play a bit, both put in decent crosses too. Saw a cross apiece from Small and Tenai that hit the intended target after their introduction. Positive signs for sure.

I’ll be very surprised if Anderson doesn’t start next week. Re Campbell and Appleton, to be fair to both the problem last season was that we didn’t have the players to play the system the manager wanted to play. Hence, we were unbalanced and lacked a coherent structure. May and Blackett Taylor were a part of that conundrum and it was hard to accommodate T Campbell in a classic 4-3-3. All credit to Jones for spotting his potential as part of a high pressing front two and for helping him adjust, but that role simply didn’t exist last season. There has been a lot of focus on individual players, but the big picture is team structure and balance.

Fit, organised, energetic, athletic, hard working and an obvious game plan! this is exactly what we have been missing for the last 3 seasons or so. Lots on here go on about the recruitment, scouting, certain types of players we have been missing, players we have sold etc etc but people forget that we haven't been a 'Fit' and 'Organised' side for those 3 mediocre seasons. I still believe we will be one of the best teams defensively in the league, I think Anderson and Campbell will both be regular match-day squad players and they will still make mistakes but could provide valuable contributions to our season. I personally think we are gradually seeing a decent team evolving and I think we will give every team a hard game!

One thing I noticed yesterday (using IMO the outdated "numbers" system) was that, instead of playing with 2 "sixes", and 1 "eight", we played with 2 "eights", and 1 "six". This meant ouf midfield press could happen far higher up the pitch. (And the energy of Anderson is very important in that formation.)
This should mean if will be far easier to get midfielders in the box to support the attacking players.
I can not see us letting Taylor go. Yesterday he fitted seamlessly into the role Coventry had played, including dead ball delivery. If you need 2 players in every position, selling him will just mean finding a back up to Coventry, with no idea that they will be better than we already had in Taylor. And what happens if Coventry gets injured?

No way should we be letting Taylor go, it’s a long season and we need all the quality that we can get, not give it away to other clubs… Fraser, Edun, Ness and possibly AMB to go….Assimwe out on loan……3 in…….a keeper, Potts and a midfielder……. The keeper is not a priority, Mannion looks neat and tidy, comes for his crosses and his distribution was good yesterday….

Who honestly missed Dobson. Would be interesting to see the stats yesterday on the amount of tackles and interceptions Coventry won yesterday…. Thought the midfield three hunted as a unit yesterday and squeezed the life out of any Pompey passing movement…..We won the majority of second balls and our ball retention when we kept it on the deck was really good

From a Chelsea supporting friend of mine who is friends with Alex Mitchells dad and was at the game yesterday: I really enjoyed yesterday. Was a bit surreal being in the Players Bar straight after the game. Alex was with us of course. And he's good mates with a couple of lovely Scottish lads. One, a new signing Josh, who's yer new Left Wing-Back. He was buzzing from a proper tackle he put in on Pompey's Winger midway through the 2nd Half - took the ball well but absolutely smashed the player as well (John Terry-esq). He actually played really well, looks a great buy. Think he's just done 4 years with Dunfermline. The other lad I was chatting to, think he's a holding midfielder, came on 2nd Half. He signed for Charlton last Summer, but missed most of the Season through injury - so he's like a new signing. He was a youth at Aberdeen, then had a 4 Yr Contract with Wolves, then 2 years at Burton. Still only about 24, really nice lad. All the lads were buzzing that they'd beaten Pompey so easy. They looked a strong team. All 5 at the back played well. The midfielders are busy & quite tidy on the ball. Campbell looked good on the Left up front, took his goal well & looked dangerous throughout. Ahadme, who you spent £1.2m on, got his goal start of 2nd Half which will do him good. He looked a bit sharper yesterday. Thought he had a poor game v Dartford, but held the ball up better yesterday. A lot will be expected of him, but he's no Alfie May - who got another 2 for Birmingham yesterday... There all buzzing for the Wigan game - win that one & they're confident of beating Orient. On yesterday's performance they look a good 5/1 bet for Promotion, although I'd fancy Birmingham & Bolton for automatic. And back Leeds v Pompey next week... should be 3 or 4 nil on that showing

Pompey just gone 3-2 up against Leeds at Leeds. They’ve scored with all their chances tbf, but they have looked pretty comfortable considering who they are playing.
Hopefully this is a good sign for us.
Edit: Ok, that didn’t last long. 3-3
