Rodwell not the man with the money. "Pay up Guffpee, Guffpee pay up" then? Guffpee fits in place of Pompey well. It's my genius new way of pronouncing GFP (our owners) and hopefully appeals to those who think they're full of piss and wind!

We need more players, cash seems to be thin on the ground so as we are playing Pompey the chant of the afternoon should be...Pay up Rodwell, Rodwell pay up!! Today will give us a big heads up on the starting line up for Wigan…….I posted previously that I thought to date we had invested/ recruited well but when you hear rumours that we have to offload before we can bring in then my alarm bells are going off big time…. Are we saying that we have used all the transfer budget on 7 new players when we offloaded around 15 players in the summer……That to me doesn’t make any sense at all… I am not too concerned about the goalkeeping situation because I think Mannion has been neat and tidy but we have offloaded two first choice centre backs last year and just brought in Mitchell…..Which leaves us with one experienced CB as back up in REG…. Wingbacks we look fine on both sides but we are only a couple of injuries away from Anderson playing week in week out again…...Taylor is decent but Edun is as much as central midfielder as I am with my hip replacement……and if Campbell is our new goal scoring, floating number ten then gawd help us, he is WIP right winger IMO…..We can forget Fraser as he will be off north pretty soon Other clubs seem to be bringing in quality in depth but i sense after a few injuries we could be back to where we were last season…. I was going to leave my thoughts on our summers recruitment until after the deadline is over but when you hear the rumours that our budget may be done then you seriously have to worry… Maybe some of the Gomez money if it comes off can be added to the transfer pot because we really need that quality left sided centre back and some additional goal scoring quality in the middle of the park…..We need more depth……. At present our first eleven is decent enough bar that extra defensive quality we need…..but we still can’t keep a clean sheet…. If our budget is blown then you have to wonder whether the owners thought this was good enough to get us promoted or the SLT suggested this was enough to get us promoted…..either way in my opinion I don’t think we have enough at present to be top 6…..other posters may disagree with me……..You just have to hope that Jones has a couple of quality loans lined up once their clubs let them go….. NJ said at the end of last season that we would start the season with a better squad than last season…..well that’s all well and good but at present I think we have gone from a team finishing 15th to a team probably finishing 9th…..as things stand at present……

Beat me to it. Interesting line up. Some surprises in there for me! Is that our strongest line up as Nathan sees it?

No Godden? Great, week before the season starts and he's missing meaning still no minutes between him and Ahadme.
Potts and Hyton still with us.

Had a feeling all along Karoy would get the nod, see what happens against Wigan. See Potts is on the bench.

You have to wonder what is going on with Small…..surely he has to start a week before Wigan…..and why is Anderson in the side? …..no Godden in the squad, has he picked up a knock?
At least Potts is still training with us…..that’s a positive……

Makes you wonder whether we feel a late bid is coming in for Small given Edwards has beaten him to a starting berth.
I know Im starting to sound like a broken record but where are the goals in this squad. We can debate it until the cows come home but when you see all the names down on a teamsheet like this it does seem like a very valid question.

If it opens up in a friendly then he's out for a couple of league games rather than just a friendly.

That starting 11 is a mid table 11. I'll raise you on that and say the whole squad is midtable material.

You could tell Jones liked him last season AA, I think he's got the nod over Berry for his energy and pressing, let's see what he gives us today.

I'd be amazed if Anderson is fancied ahead of Berry next Saturday. I'm hoping that NJ knows Berry is a starter so is giving Karoy a chance to show his worth. Hoping the same goes for Edwards being selected ahead of Small.

That’s what I thought Reams, is this the explanation about Small…..do we have to get funds in to get other players in…..? Why the hell is Anderson in there instead of Berry…?

I do understand the doom mongering to a degree. However i also think in this modern era, your manager is not going to play what appears to be the team you are going to play in your first league game in yiur final pre season game. Its about keeping the opposition guessing. No issue with that. This wont be the starting team next week. Berry will play instead of Anderson. Did anyone read Edwards interview on Friday. He said he has played left wing aswell. I think Edwards will play for his versatility but not at the expense of Thierry Small.
I think we need to trust Nathan Jones. We will be hard to beat. I think its clear once Fraser goes he will buy another midfielder. Im not sure cash is thin on the ground. We have spent a fortune on the pitch, backroom staff and training field.

I have thought that throughout pre-season we were one short in midfield, still plenty of time, let's see what happens before the window closes. Interesting that he has chosen Edwards in front of Small, but it doesn't surprise me after all the little snippets this week like Jones wants me to aim for a Scotland place! He defended exceptionally well last week, but I haven't seen anything of him going forwards yet and we desperately need a service to our forwards from the left. Looking forward to K.O.

It does appear budget wise the cupboard ia bare and whilst I do agree we need to offload Fraser we will be still be paying the majority of his wages so I don't think the quality we need as his replacement is going to come from that.

I've had a bit of a rethink and decided that we'll find out alot more about who starts at Wigan next week when today's changes are made.
If many come at half time then I would hazard a guess that NJ is still unsure on whe he favours in certain positions. Giving the likes of Edwards and Small 45 minutes each today means it's going to the wire. The same in other positions especially in midfield.
If however changes don't get made until the 60th minute onwards then I would say whoever is still on the pitch at that point, is a certainty for the opening game of the season.

Yep, and whilst I applaud the ownership for the off pitch funding let us not forget the new pitch would not have happened without the £750k grant which covered approximately 2/3 of the cost.
