Some of Coventrys passing today has been absolutely sublime…… I've not seen any friendlies apart from this one, and I was shocked at the pelters he has been getting. I rated him even last season from the times I saw him play. Glad to see he's still performing when I watch. This has been a very encouraging performance from the whole team.

That's friendlies for you: one week we look poor, and the next we look very good. Flip flopping like football forums

I’ve really enjoyed watching this, but it’s difficult to judge how good we’ve been because Portsmouth have been woeful, they don’t look too interested………saying that I’m very encouraged by what I’ve seen today - roll on 5he season!!

Portsmouth look poor but I think that is largely down to the way we’ve played. I’ve got to say, for all the concerns, I think our midfield has looked good. Coventry in particular has really stood out for me.

Cleansheet for those that worry about that in friendlies. It’s a nice stat to have I think going into the first game.
Sounds like we were much improved!

Really good watch that…..and a bloody clean sheet….🤣🤣
Can’t quite work out if we would really good or Pompey were bloody terrible………probably a bit of both…..
I don’t think we will see a poorer side come to the Valley this season….but great for us to grow some confidence and we had a host of players who played really well today in Ramsay, Jones, Coventry, Adhadme Edwards and TC……the rest weren’t that bad either……..
When you look back at the chances we should really have scored 4 or 5 today….

TBF our squad looks like we have two decent players for every position, something we couldn't really say previously.

Really good performance, all played well and didn't allow Portsmouth to play at all. Really like Edwards and Coventry was particularly good today. Think Campbell has put his name in the frame to start next week, looks to have improved his game. Said before the game I don't think Docherty and Berry works that well together and I stand by that as that was a greatly improved midfield performance.

Some of Coventrys passing today has been absolutely sublime…… Yeah yeah yeah! But is he making any tackles? Is he charging around like a headless chicken? Is he wearing salmon shorts?

Really good second half and we did well overall, encouraging that when we play we look good. Great to see both of our starting forwards scoring. Even when we made all the changes, it didn't look like it particularly weakened us.
Think Jones is going to have to think hard about who starts at LWB as both Edwards and Small looked very good.
Going back to our pre match thoughts, you can definitely see why Karoy started, our pressing was much better with him instead of Berry in the team.
What a difference from last Saturday night!
Taking absolutely nothing away from us at all today because we were the better side, but Portsmouth are definitely going to struggle next season if that performance is anything to go by!

So good to start having positive posts again after the negativity during the past week. Still need 2 or 3 in, but an excellent performance.

Let's not get carried away with the result guys because Wycombe beat them 4-0 last week.

A good performance and a clean sheet . Second half Coventry was excellent . Good competition for places but would keep the same starting 11 for Wigan . Can’t wait .

Let's not get carried away with the result guys because Wycombe beat them 4-0 last week. And they lost to Swindon 1-0, doesn't mean a thing that mate

Didn’t want to jinx things but did think we would win this. Pompey held at MK in the week. Fans upset and not happy. Colony bishop injured and haven’t really added a lot of quality compared to who they have let go.
A great result but it was kind of expected given our record against them.
Nonetheless roll on Wigan. Who lost today to Barrow and Tranmere previously!!

Can we put the "Coventry can't tackle" story to bed now?

Some of Coventrys passing today has been absolutely sublime…… Been saying about Coventry for a while what a good player he is been excellent pre season He just needs to put in that sort of performance on a consistent basis……Coventry has been a bit marmite with our fan base since he joined but with performances like that he will win the fans over…… What I liked about the performance was that the midfield three were quite compact and hunted the ball in a pack, pressing and hassling the Pompey players into making mistakes…..Docherty is going to make a great captain……Anderson did ok today also, didn’t give the ball away much and if he can improve on his ball retention he will become a better player as he does have a good engine

Was at the game and enjoyed the afternoon. Don’t think we can read too much into preseason friendlies, but I’d imagine Nathan Jones will have been very pleased by that performance.
Most importantly, we’ve obviously got a very clear game plan and the players know their roles, both individually and collectively. We looked well balanced and having had the better of the first half we began to overrun Portsmouth in the second. We could have scored several more goals while I don’t think Portsmouth made a single chance.
Every player did their job, including the subs, but I felt Jones, Ramsey, Anderson and Campbell did particularly well.
It’s always been tough to predict Jones’ team selections but I’d imagine the starting XI today will also start next Saturday at Wigan. Jones may have a dilemma at left wing back, but I assume Edwards started today because he’s seen as a bit more reliable and better defensively than Small?
Interesting that six of today’s starting XI were at the club last season. Moreover, of the total of twenty one players used this afternoon, fourteen were at the club last season. When Leaburn returns, perhaps in September, I assume he’ll start ahead of Ahadme. This does not look like it’s a going to be a completely new team.

Pretty good today, though it looks like Pompey are going to do a Rotherham this season. Most pleasing aside from the win, was the clean sheet. I still feel we are lacking that goalscoring/attacking midfielder, but unfortunately, they don't grow on trees.
Now the serious stuff starts, COYA.

When Leaburn returns, perhaps in September, I assume he’ll start ahead of Ahadme. This does not look like it’s a going to be a completely new team. Six new players on top of four new players brought in last January, leaving only Campbell from the distant past. And he hardly featured last season. So a brand new first XI in 2024. But the subs featured many players from 2023 and earlier. As you state, everyone stuck to their jobs - nobody had a poor game. As for Portsmouth, impossible to tell where they are. But we have League and cup games coming up where we can all assess the tactics, selections and performances. We really don't know how our competition have developed over the summer but the table, results and xG will give us a good idea after ten games. How will we do against the bigger budget sides? And what about the bottom half where we've failed so often over the last few seasons? Jones has done a decent job over the last six months. Jones and the rest need to coach and develop this squad. We don't know the exact numbers so for now we rely upon the management to work with what we have until January 2025 window. But there will be some players growing at a different pace to others. Plus injuries and one or two attracting bids from elsewhere. So we need the whole club to grow now in terms of crowds, merchandise and commercial revenue.
