That is interesting. It doesn’t say if he is right or left footed, which is quite significant for a winger or wing back.

Glad to hear we are in the running for Fred Onyedima according to Luton fans. I posted the message below on this thread on Sunday. PS He was released by Luton on July 1st and has been on trial with Stoke and a Turkish club over the close season but remains unattached. The number of positions he can cover (see below) is pretty impressive. I'm a bit worried about his wage demands, but I guess some pay is better than none. If we are looking to address the lack of a creative midfielder, there are quite a few free agents out there. The one that most interests me is Fred Onyedinma. He was signed by NJ at Luton (having come through the ranks at Millwall), born in Nigeria but grew up in Greenwich and played youth football in Blackheath on the same team as Joe Gomez. He has bags of experience at Championship and L1 level, as well as featuring in eight PL games for Luton at the end of last season. 27 years old with insane utility player vibes. This is his career (appearances, goals and assists) to date (excluding around 100 other games where Transfermarkt doesn't list the position he played): Right Midfield 75 7 4 Left Midfield 61 9 6 Attacking Mid 30 6 7 Right Winger 24 1 4 Left Winger 23 9 2 Centre-Forward 16 1 3 Central Mid 10 - 1 Second Striker 5 3 - Right-Back 2 - - Is there any reason why he's not on our radar (yeah he mainly plays wide, but NJ has signed him before)? Injuries don't seem to be an issue with 350-ish appearances at age 27. Wages, perhaps?

I suspect that he had a significant pay hike when Luton were promoted to the Premier League, and having played a few games (8) there plus 149 in the Championship he is expecting his wages to be decent now he is in his late 20s. You are right though, a short term contract on less money is better than no income at all, and uit gets him in the shop window.

What are some examples of players we've signed as free agents after deadline day who've actually been good?
Obviously LuaLua and Wickham last season were dire, but there must have been some good ones?

They’re obviously way too good (and expensive) for us, but I see that Mats Hummels and Joel Matip are free agents!! It’s possible there are some very good players available.

Probably not but saw the cheap short term contract bit and automatically thought it might be Hylton….especially as both him and Potts are still supposedly training with us….

It's only a month ago (press conference after the Pompey friendly) that NJ said he definitely wanted to sign both Potts and Hylton. He also specified there was no rush. Nothing much has changed in our centre half or striker situation since then to think he longer wants both (reading between the lines, sounds like a case of waiting it out for their wage demands to drop).

We currently have five fully fit forwards to chose from with Leaburn also returning in a few weeks time…..Would we not be better off taking a short term contract punt on someone like Marcus Browne who can play in behind the front two as an alternative option to our rigid two number 8’s, especially when we need something a bit different like at Reading when we were chasing the game…….

Yes. I'd prefer an AM as would most Charlton fans. I'm not saying what I want to see, I'm just saying that NJ told the media a month ago that he was hoping to sign Hylton and our striker situation was the same then as it is now, so there's a good chance he will be the other one to sign with Potts (who NJ said in the same interview he hoped to sign). What we want and what NJ wants aren't always going to be the same thing!

Good signing is Potts……another leader in the squad / team……… but looking at the short term contract offered it looks like we only have the budget for one more player so we will no doubt bring another player in ( probably Hylton) on the same length of contract…..not exactly showing the ambition of a club looking to progress unless of course the player only wanted a short term contract……
