They'll go up this season. Had some good results during pre-season. Good move for him given he was born in Colchester.

People will generally welcome signings because they want them to work. Despite the claims of some, most won’t have a clue as to whether they will be successful. One other issue was clearly the injuries and some would have been successful had the new structure been in place. The medical improvements are another reason to feel optimistic particularly We all thought Fraser was a good player. When he went to Ipswich we were mostly dismayed. Jaiyesimi was another wonder buy based on one ga.e against us. Most people seemed keen on Berkovic. I was not bothered. Too much all about a boy really. Aneke has been injured for ever now. MacGrandles wasn't given a chance yesterday the 'fans' IMHO. When he equalised at Pompey he hesitated celebrating with the fans the point of walking away. That can't be right. No wonder players don't settle in. The medical staff are better. However we got a lot of injuries of the pitch. We haven't seen much of Taylor yet as his pattern of injury matched that of Macgrandles. Fraser and Panutche had injuries soon after arriving. What was wrong with the previous medical personnel?

Madness that we haven't gone for him.
Joe Taylor going to Huddersfield on loan too.
I am right behind NJ but I think his stance on loan signings is completely wrong.
Our business has been good but again a few injuries and we are thin on numbers and quality.
Never seem to learn.

I said all this just prior to the Pompey game but it looks like everyone got swept up in the euphoria of beating a piss poor side lacking key players…. I will say it again, we lack quality in depth, once we get injuries and suspensions to a few key players I think we will struggle and be back to square one where we were last season….. It’s all well and good having a small squad which is NJ’s preference but to do that you have to have a quality cover and at this stage I don’t think we are strong enough…. Peeps are raving over a decent first half performance from TC and a steady midfield showing from Anderson and saying they must be definate starters for us……..I still have memories of some pretty mediocre performances from them over a course of a season last year and a summer and pre season just doesn’t change that overnight……We have brought in some leaders and grown ups as Grapevine puts it so well in Godden, Berry and Docherty and they will be the key to us having a decent season…..Whether we have the strength in depth to challenge I am not so sure about……but we shall see……

We know from what Jones has said and the trialists we’ve had that he wants a GK, CB and midfielder, with hopefully Dixon and possibly Hylton adding to that too. The attempt to sign Hein shows we’re willing to loan players if they’ll improve us and come in as starters. I wouldn’t write off some of the youngsters improving this season either. As we’ve seen in the past not all of them fully establish themselves in their first season in senior football.

As we’ve seen in the past not all of them fully establish themselves in their first season in senior football. I am not writing the youngsters off, or their improvement levels ….far from it but I think they should more WIP around the first eleven rather than regular starters…..just my opinion…. We have just gone through a pretty piss poor season where we failed to control games in the middle of the park, gave the ball away cheaply etc… so NJ has strengthened this area but we still go back to players who contributed to this from last season… I have said on previous posts probably like most fan bases when we win we are the best thing since sliced bread and when we lose we are the worst team in the world….there doesn’t seem to be any grey area in between.….at present we are still on a high from Pompey and the players at present including TC and Anderson are the bees knees and fans are saying they both need to be starting because they both had decent games…...but this league is going to be tougher this time round and I think you will need your experienced players to grind out results…..and we also lack that bit of midfield creativity that someone like Macatee would bring…… Just my opinion. I think with our current squad we will finish around 8th…….but I will be very happy to be proved wrong by the team come next May…….

Being realistic, going from finishing 16th to battling for promotion is always going to be a tough ask. The fact the league has got far stronger this season as well is another challenge on top of that.
Without a Birmingham or Ipswich type budget, I'm not sure we will be able to guarantee we fight for promotion this season.
I'm happy with the signings so far and feel we're a much stronger outfit than we were last year. Whether that is enough, only time will tell.
We have a big squad at the moment. However, GK and Midfield feels a bit light for me. In terms of depth and/or quality. If we can sort that out then we have a chance to do well. We will need things to go our way though of course, as will any team fighting for promotion.

A coventry fan thinks cafc have put in loan move for 3rd choice gk brad collins Can't say I know anything about him but he looks to have the same stature as AMB/Isted. Standing at 6ft which is fairly small for a keeper, I personally wanted someone who's going to defend set pieces properly - he may have alot more confidence that will allow him to do that, but I would rather someone of Mannion's stature at this point. Then again the tweet also says Blackburn/Pompey are interested... So what do I know!

Out of the two « Support » keepers at Coventry Collins better represents the Jones profile. He is also 4yrs younger and might welcome a move south - he started at Chelsea. He was though born in Southampton so Portsmouth maybe a better fit. Interestingly he was signed just this time last year to be their « No « 1 so I suspect he will more interested in securing a move elsewhere. Coventry equally might prefer the cash from selling him to continue their squad rebuild.

Is Mannion that bad that he can’t be our number one, if so why pursue him in the first place? We seem to be panicking a little and going after 3rd choice goalkeepers from the league above.

I would hope it's Mannion vs Incoming for the #1 shirt. AMB shouldn't play for us again imo. It's Mannion's to lose though, if he continues his form, no reason to change.

I would be inclined to stick with Mannion, as hopefully the keeper this season will have a better defence in front of him.

Mannion isn’t bad at all, I was very impressed when he played against us up at Cambridge…...he was a huge upgrade on the keeper we had between the sticks that day…..he comes for his crosses, distributes well in the pre season games I have seen so we don’t need to be in any sort of rush just to panic buy a number one keeper in…..but that is not NJ’s style to panic buy or loan….. I agree with a poster earlier about the size of Collins…..must admit I prefer my keepers six feet 5 and clearing all before him to collect crosses…..Collins, if he is the man seems to have had plenty of championship experience…..

Yep, agree with this, but unfortunately all the available midfield talent you speak about seems to be heading to our competitors… Jones in an SLP article today says he is not bothered about other clubs having bigger budgets than us, all he is concerned about is how ready we are come Saturday evening…….My take on it is that the best squads in terms of quality in depth will be competing for top 6 next April….Whether that be us I am not so sure….but we shall see….

There is of course every chance that Mannion is more than good enough, but only time will tell. I'm not massively concerned with the amount of quality in the middle of the park, until injuries and suspensions kick in, then depth certainly looks to be an issue. I'm hoping this can solved with a loan or two.

I tend to think that some of us are forgetting that we made some progress last season which should carry on into this season. In terms of the youngsters, Karoy Anderson, Dan Kanu , Tyreece Campbell, Nathan Asiimwe and Miles Leaburn are all now significantly more experienced at this level and it wouldn't be unreasonable to suggest that they should all improve. Of the signings from last season, whilst I'm not certain that REG and Gillesphey move us on much and the jury is still out on Coventry. However, Small & Ramsey are both very good players. So that's before you add in Mitchell, Berry, Godden , Edwards , etc. We always want and need better players and who knows what the season will bring but I think we underestimate the progression that we should see from the youngsters who now have a season or two under their belts.
