Rodwell told us the new signings will be a combination of shopping at Waitrose and Aldi (or was it Lidl?) To fit the 8-8-8 pie in the sky, you need 8 elite players to fill the first band. I take it Waitrose is shut every time we try going there because there is no way on this earth do we have 8 elite footballers at the club. NJ will be pulling up tree's to get us into the top six at present. I don't think we've done anything to make the rest of the league sit up and take notice. Still time of course, and maybe we've got something up our sleeve, but at present top six looks like our ceiling IMHO. Really …. Who has its horses for courses and Jones wanted these players cause he knows they been there and done it and are better then we already had

Lot's of clubs have signed players from abroad in this summer window. I don't know the stats but it feels like a significant jump to normal for the EFL at least.
I'm a bit disappointed we haven't appeared to look elsewhere as much. Presumably we haven't got the scouting network to do this?

I know football and message boards are all about opinions, but it does concern me that sometimes an opinion gets largely accepted as a fact by people within that particular social media bubble (eg a Charlton forum).
We've seen the danger of that in a far more serious sense with the recent nationwide riots and attacks on mosques. These seem to have stemmed from far-right social media influencers and sites spreading rumours that the vile Southport killer (RIP the victims) was a recently arrived Muslim refugee. In actual fact he's a Christian born in Wales.
Obviously a 'false narrative' in terms of football issues isn't dangerous, merely stoking expectations rather than violence. However the fact that things like 'Andy Scott f***ed over Dobson', 'we're doomed without Alfie May' or 'we need an AM as none of our midfielders can score goals' does somewhat irk me.
Obviously we'll only learn the truth (or otherwise) of such views when the season starts, but here's another that is disprovable right now. Someone on CL has just posted (unchallenged) that 'we have just about the biggest squad in the league'. Do we? Do we really?
I couldn't be arsed checking the whole 24 teams, but here are the top six in the betting odds in terms of current senior squad size: Wrexham 34 | Huddersfield 30 | Birmingham 29 | Bolton, Rotherham & Charlton all 26.
Given that we've already done most of our business, we're likely to have one of the smallest (not biggest) squads in L1 this coming season. NJ has specifically said he wants a below average squad size (hence the 'outgoings now needed' mantra) after the ridiculously bloated squad last season when we used 47 players in first team games.
But as things stand, we have more or less the opposite of 'the biggest squad in the league'... yet that statement sits there unquestioned on CL, where less tech-aware and more time-pressed fans (rather than disproving it with their own swift Google) will simply accept it as fact.
False narratives are a curse in this modern age of social media bubbles. For that reason, let me counteract the general mood and say once again that Luke Berry (if played as an AM and free from major injuries) will score at least 10 goals for us this season. Of course I'd like us to bring in another AM too, but that's more borne of (my) greed rather than (Charlton's) necessity.
EDIT: Whilst I was typing this up a couple of CLers have challenged that largest squad narrative, so fair play to them.

Berry scored a goal every 165 minutes in the Premier League last season, which is brilliant for a midfielder. By way of comparison our sainted 'goal machine' Alfie May only managed slightly better (a goal every 151 minutes) against League One defences. I'm expecting 10+ goals from Berry this season and don't get why everyone else has written him off as a scorer before the season has even begun. I for one have not written Berry off in fact I am looking forward to seeing him and Docherty work together in our midfield…..The problem I have found that with any new player that joins us is that if they do not hit the ground running with immediate effect in terms of form the concerned vibes come out….I would say that after years of poor recruitment we have been burned a bit so I can understand it to an extent Lets not forget when Dobson first rocked up he didn’t start that great and was actually dropped from the team during his first few months and then became a firm fans favourite Some players like Small settle very quickly into their work others need a bit of time to get used to their new working environment

Look I haven't decided that I don't rate him and Docherty as much as what others do. All I'm saying is their arrival does show signs that we just are not learning our lesson in transfer windows. Terry Taylor arrived with high hopes but picked up and an injury and the arrival of new players who play in his position signalled that we were looking to call it a day with him but he has bounced back from almost being the forgotten man and looks better than who we have brought in to 'replace him'. We have five players in the middle of the field now who don't have great goalscoring records and this is my concern. I don't have a problem with them being here as it means our bench will be much stronger but I do have questions as to why there is still no CAM or a 10.

Taylor certainly has been tidy in the pre season friendlies so it will be interesting to see if he or Coventry gets the nod on Saturday and up at Wigan….. I think we need both personally as it is a long season and they will both have a big part to play I Would imagine the midfield players that we are looking to move on are the obvious Fraser and probably Edun but then that would only leave two reserve midfield players in the squad being Anderson and Taylor/ Coventry so we will deffo bring in a quality midfielder in by the close of the window….. Fraser is keen to go back up north, his family are already up there I think so it is a case of how much of his salary we will pay and how much another club will pay……Probably a case of he who blinks first…..wouldn’t surprise me if this kept rumbling on until deadline day, but I would very much doubt that we will see Fraser in a Charlton shirt again The resolution to the Fraser problem is we just let him go on a free. The buying club can then save on cost and put whatever they were willing to pay us for him towards his wages. Naive to expect a fee for a want away player who doesn't feature in your plans. I don't think we've been expecting a fee for a while. It's about how much of his wages we will have to pay up. The average wage at Dundee FC (according to Google so, maybe not 100% accurate) is c. £42,256. Mr Fraser is earning, allegedly, £312,000. A free transfer won't be cheap enough. I would like the club to hold firm and tell him that he takes a pay cut or he stays in London. However, I suspect that, in the end, we will pay him off. It's just about how close we get to the end of the transfer window before we come to an agreement.

Jones did this in certain games at Luton and Southampton. Players like Robert Snodgrass,Mendes Gomes and Luke Freeman They where wingers that got coached in to be more central players under Jones and I think the same will happen here. Unfortunately some people have came obsessed with the no 10 position and think you can't play football without one. Most of are creativity is going to come from wide areas anyway and we have one of the best box's crashing midfielders in the league.

I don’t think you necessarily need a 10/creative midfielder in your starting XI , but I would like one in the squad - just for flexibility.
A lot of teams in the PL play without a 10. In fact, Liverpool’s greatest team in recent years played with 3 ‘workers’ in midfield (Hendo, Wijnaldum, Fabinho) with the creativity coming from the full backs and forwards. I imagine this is what Jones is going for, without having watched any of the friendlies.
Small and Ramsay have enough pace and power to run all day and I think they’re going to be huge for us going forward. That said, I’d like us to be able to mix things up in games and I can’t see how we do that with our current players.

Not sure why nobody has suggested Godden as a 10. He is losing pace and while playing at a higher level, scored only 14 in 65 over last two seasons.

That's why we have brought in the players we have because they are all workman like with a few different traits in the game. The most important thing is that the no6 gives you control and managers the tempo of the game. We will bring someone in to play behind the forwards for example Tom Ince. He fits the type of of player Jones, like and has played under him before so would know what is expected.

Him in a free role behind the two forwards would suit him but I worry about him on the other side of the game that needs work. I'm not just saying positive things for the sake of it. I have worries about us defensive and the lack of clean sheets. Gillesphey worries me because he lacks athleticism and that is important in the wide cent backs in a Jones, team. Adhadme and Leaburn not been fit will mean we will lack physical presence up top we will also miss there runs in the channels.

In a world of two players for each position surely Dixon and Campbell will be one such pair, giving us the winger/deeper lying striker option (often from the bench). Dixon being primarily right sided and TC left sided (but both being playable on either wing) is goodly for balance/options too.

I respect other people's opinions but talk of Campbell as a 10 or Dixon even starting games before Xmas is surely shared in hope rather than expectation. It's so long ago since we had a CAM who scores goals and it goes hand in hand with why no midfielder has got into double figures from the middle of the park for donkeys years. We can pack the midfield with as many workmanlike players as you care to put in there but the work has to have an end product which is goals. We have more players who are more likely to go backwards with the ball at present than we have those who will push forward into the final third. Fands putting the amount of responsibility they are doing onto the young shoulders of Dixon before he's even got his vias is a hard read to be honest. It will take him 3-6 months to adapt to the pace and physicality of the English game. He's Kaheim Dixon not Lamine Yamal. Same goes for Tyreece, I hope he steps up but is final ball and execution at the business end of the pitch is lacking.

It will most likely be a winger that gets coached in to be more of no8 or in free role behind the front 2 or to make front 3. Examples Someone like Tom Ince. Is there a problem with the build up structure? This is a workman like team you have to make forward runs to make space for others. We have one of the best box's crashing midfielders in the league in Luke Berry. Who is is also very good at operating in between the lines. Goals won't be a problem but not keeping clean sheets will be. The no6 is the key to how we progress going forward.

We don't have wingers though, we have wing backs and I can't see Watson, Edwards, Ramsay or Small being coached to play in another position other than the one they are good at and that certainly won't be behind the two strikers. You don't coach players to play in different positions anyway, that comes with a natuaral flair to adapt into a different role. You can be the best 'box crasher' in the world but you need goals in you and while Berry will do a job for us I don't know how you can call him one of the best in the league given we haven't seen what other players at other clubs have to offer. I disagree with you on conceding goals being a bigger issue than it will scoring them simply because we have enough defensive minded midfielders to protect the back four while in comparison the strikers don't yet have players behind them who can engineer that second phase attack when the first one breaks down.

Hello all, new person here. I've followed both main forums for a while and thought I'd join in. Hope rather than expectation it would be nice when Dixons permit is approved we announce him Begovic and Potts. I'd be a bit more confident after the Wimbledon debacle. Would love to see NJ move heaven and earth to get Taylor and or Macatee on loan. He said a while back he wanted powerful athletic types I thought. Surprised we didn't have a go for Wiredu and Knibbs.

It does not have to Dixon or Campbell. Where did I say he was going to take a wing back and play them certainly? Most of the time at Luton he would bring in a player that was a winger and work with them to make them no8 or free role behind the two forwards or even join the front two to make a front 3. A example of this is Robert Snodgrass, Luke Freeman and Carlos Mendes Gomes. He would only do that in certain game most of the time it was two no8. He did the same at Southampton elyounoussi. Disagree about not coaching players to play in different positions . Some will just adopted naturally why other will need help and guidance. It will also depend on system and style. I have watched enough of Luke berry to know that he will be one of the best boxs crashing midfielders in the league and that is all that matters to us. He will get 8 to 10 goals and I'm not bothered if he is the best but he will do a blood good job for us that is all that matters. The only worry I have about him is he's injure record. Disagree about us defensively and goals won't be a problem.
