Fair play to the investors.
They have recognised that to get out of this poxy league, you have to spend heavily on players and the correct calibre of manager.
In the space of a week, we’ve gone from Appleton auditioning for a presenter’s job on Homes Under The Hammer (source BB),to being linked with a manager with recent top flight experience.
It’s just a shame that our transfer activity has stalled after a promising mid January. We are still miles off it, and need another 3-4 elite players this week.

Small progress is still progress we all know we aren’t where we should be it’s the investors funding the losses so they will come to there senses sooner rather than later they are smart people after all.

It’s going to be an interesting and probably frantic last day of the window where the new man in charge will be dictating who we target as our last minute.com players I just can’t see either Rowett or Jones being dictated to by Scott on who he wants to bring in… Hopefully the money men have landed at the Valley this week with their cheque books open and have said to the new incumbent we will try and get who you ask for to keep us up

If I was one of the investors flying in today, my first question would be, why have I wasted my money on Appleton and why wasn’t he sacked earlier or a bigger question? Why did he get the job in the first place? Secondly, Why are we signing players that are not Match-fit. SMT need a rocket up their arses hope it’s not their appraisals😂 Anyway Reams seems positive, but not leaving much time for these players. I wouldn’t mind Warburton .

Mid-season when you’re now facing a relegation battle rather then the possibility of 😂🤣 top six dream on

Yes and I know Nathan Jones and Mark Warburton were not managing clubs at the start of this season. Were neither of them considered last time around?
Alex Neil has disappeared from the bookmarkers odds.
"Best profile since Curbishley", I don't know, Warburton on that list may come close, none of the others do, but I hope they work out. On paper Nigel Adkins had the best CV of the recent managers and had a good start. If we'd had a decent transfer window who knows what we might have achieved.

I still believe a missed opportunity with Adkins. His profile with today’s alleged intent then who knows?
Agree today for new manager announcement is important

I must admit I had high hopes for Adkins.
Southampton people I know say they played their best football in years when he was in charge.

I must admit I had high hopes for Adkins. Southampton people I know say they played their best football in years when he was in charge. I think he was shafted by Sandgaard who, completely, failed to back him with the players he needed to win the title, like he predicted when Hull won it at The Valley "this'll be us next year!" Incidentally Sandgaard, also, shafted Jackson and Garner. Both of whom were not given the resources to build a squad that could challenge at the top of League One. And, like with Adkins, Sandgaard threw them under the bus to prevent having to back them so that he should shift the blame, all the while his son was chief scout. The son that, it seemed, had worked for one of his Dad's businesses his whole life. The new owners seem to be much more professional than Sandgaard, although it was a rather low bar. I don't think we will know what the new owners are made of until the SMT are competent. I have been keen to give them (The SMT) the benefit of doubt but their performance hasn't impressed me so far.

It felt to me at the time that Adkins was shafted mostly by Ged Roddy who was in charge of that transfer window. His strategy was to go for the top "out of contract" players, but to get the better of the agencies, he would wait until it was near the end of the transfer window when they would be "desperate" for a club to play for, and he could pick them up on the cheap. We did get George Dobson in that transfer window. And Sean Clare, who was not that good.
It felt that Sandgaard "lost the plot" at that point. Why appoint "experts" like Ged Roddy to run the footballing side when he only made a big mess of it? His son could do a better job!
Same with the setup now. Even if Scott and Rodwell fail, it doesn't mean it's wrong to have a senior management team in place, it just means you hired the wrong people.
Looking back at that transfer window though: - Ipswich were doing a complete rebuild. It didn't work out at first, but it was the start of progress. - Wigan somehow had the money to pay massive amounts to players and got promoted as champions, only to come back down again with financial problems. - Rotherham bounced straight back up with Paul Warne as manager. - MK Dons came oh-so-close picking up a number of the players we probably should have bought. But after failing, they ended up getting relegated the following season. Did they overstep a budget to achieve it?

I’m fairly confident that if the investors seek third party advice to cross check what they’ve been told by Charlie Methven and the CAFC Board, it will confirm that having a Technical Director or Director of Football is the best strategy. They might add that the only reasons most clubs in Leagues One and Two don’t go this route is because they can’t afford to.

You only need a DOF imo if your dealing with millions of pounds worth of assets and their agents not in lge one its a total waste of money.

What I would say though is that the idea Michael Appleton was appointed because he was “the cheap option” doesn’t make any sense. Why would anyone spend £12m buying the club, fund a top six wage bill and sanction the recruitment of a Technical Director and a Director of Performance, then cut corners on the recruitment of a Head Coach, probably the single most important hire the club is going to make? I think we have to assume that Appleton was hired because Rodwell and Scott (I assume, though others may have been involved too) genuinely believed he was the right man for the job given what they were looking for and given the candidates available. They clearly now believe they made a mistake. Let’s hope they don’t come to regret the decision they’re about to make about the next Head Coach.

Even in League One Charlton has a player wage bill of around £6m p.a. and transfer income and outgoings which can run into a few millions. Someone has to worry about how that money is spent and there are good reasons why it’s not a good idea to leave that entirely up to the Head Coach who on average (at all clubs, not just Charlton) has a shorter tenure than the contract length of the better players.

Chief Exec normally worries about the money, when your dealing with freebies and transfers of max 1m waste on money having a dof, get a proper manager think you'll find most managers at this level prefer it, we've had this under Sandguarrd with his son and roddy and now with Andy Scott and its not working we need to get back to basics.

I suspect one of the reasons we’re in such a mess today is precisely because we didn’t have a specialist who knew what they were doing managing the budget for the squad and negotiating player contracts during Sandgaard’s period of ownership. Let's take the absurd decision to award the injury prone Chuks Aneke a three and a half year contract on attractive wages back in January 2022 as an example. From the manager’s perspective (Johnnie Jackson at the time - and I’m not criticising him) that was probably a good signing. Aneke might just have got us into the playoffs. Great for Jacko and no downside. He’s long gone, but the club are still stuck with Aneke. It’s an extreme example, but it’s a generic point and the principle is the same whether the sums of money are large or small. There are lots of “proper” managers, many of them way above League One level, who are happy working with a DOF. We might just have to agree to disagree.

Dubaicafc on other forum saying board members can't all agree jones is right man for job That's the spirit, make it public that he's not wanted by all of the board. That'll help encourage a manager to join a club that has sacked five managers in twenty-seven month, and a board that has sacked two in five months. WTF is wrong with those at the club? Can't they keep anything in house? I can only assume that one of the board members has shared this information - after all the drama of the Appleton has gone, he's staying, he's sacked carry on. WTF is wrong with these people? They are supposed to be on the board of a multi-million pound turn-over business! If I was one of the external investors I think I'd sack the lot of them, and Methven. Immediately!
