It’s beginning to feel a lot like a (Charlton) Christmas?
Here we go, from Rich Cawley this morning -
“Micheal Appleton says the January transfer window needs to be a “million times better” than the last two if Charlton have any chance of promotion.
Not the first first time that Appleton has talked about the squad, and it’s clear he feels major changes need to be made.
Appleton said “it would be stupid of me or daft of me not to say that if we are going to have any chance of getting out of this division this season, or next season, or the one after that. The transfer windows are massive”
There is no ambiguity here from Appleton.
Regardless of Xg, or points per games , or salivating about appointing a Director of Performance, this is the guy who works with this squad , day in day out. And he’s publicly calling out what most of us have seen - that Andy Scott isn’t good enough; and that the past two transfer windows under these weak kneed blaggers (SE7 Partners), have been piss poor, and are taking us nowhere fast.
Adkins, Jackson and Garner all publicly & privately fell out with Sandgaard over recruitment, and were fired
And Dean Holden had just gone public in saying SE7 Partners model for success is cheap kids and loans.
Maybe Appleton read Holden’s moments, and has reacted accordingly?

If they and Scott fuck this up with cheap loans etc….I am not sure where the club will be heading after this…. |

Fair play to him for speaking up , but it’s not exactly rocket science that you don’t get out of this league with cheap loans and untried kids . January is going to be interesting. Both Dean Holden and now Micheal Appleton saying we need experienced players, quality, leadership. Andy Scott and Jim Rodwell saying they want to go in a different direction. No club - certainly not a successful one - can achieve with this chasm in ambition. |

Well Appleton is definitely not toeing the party line in those comments.
Not exactly a yes man.
The concern will be that he leaves by so called mutual consent as they like to call being sacked.
If it does happen then I guess a new managerwill becontent with kids ours and loaned and crocked players.

However, how do we know that Andy Scott isn’t in complete agreement? I don’t believe for one minute that Scott believes we can win promotion from this division with cheap kids and loans and if we don’t look capable of winning promotion (next season, even if not this) he won’t stay in his job. Describing SE7 Partners as “weak kneed blaggers” might be funny, but there is no evidence for that viewpoint. There is no comparison between SE7 and the dear departed Captain Bullshit. |

Andy Scott has sat back and created an environment whereby we debut a raw kid (Rylah) in an important league game, allow Kirk to languish with his personal barber on £6000 a week, and indulge Aneke still further. And Asiimwe, Anderson & Tyreece Campbell have all seen their development halted this season because we don’t have a squad as such, just a couple of good players, a dozen old sweats and has beens, and the rest are kids. Look at the alarming slump that Lucas Ness has suffered this season for the very real impact that Scott’s idiocy can have on a young player’s career. We have a slightly different perspective Occam’s Razor and that’s fair enough of course. For me, Thomas Sandgaard had a classic and dysfunctional narcissistic personality. He always knew best, wanted to make all the decisions (despite having no relevant experience or ability) and systematically undermined anyone working for him. Like most narcissists he sensed that those around him thought he was a Dick and so didn’t trust anyone. His solution was to put his son in charge of data, analysis and recruitment. The result was entirely predictable with the club massively underperforming its wage bill. We now have some grown up investors who understand the importance of specialisation, experience, management structure and delegation and Methven, very wisely, has sought to put together a management team that will meet their expectations. He may or may not have made good appointments. In my view only time will tell as far as that is concerned, but I’m very confident that what we have now is light years from the delusional chaos we experienced under Sandgaard. That’s just my perspective obviously. You’re probably right about budget. It’s probably not much different at this point to what it was under Sandgaard, but budget wasn’t the problem under Sandgaard. We’ve consistently had a top six wage budget, or better, and ought to have made the playoffs in each of the last two seasons based on what the owner spent. The problem was how he spent it. Sandgaard created the Kirk and Aneke problems (among others) and I’m sure SE7 would offload both players if that were possible. Glad you’re back posting on here by the way. |

Once in post, with a nice long contract, and a guaranteed payoff, these new Managers, suddenly, decide that developing youngsters and selling the best players is not going to work. Then the owners who, I believe, were, completely, upfront about their strategy, decide to move the Manager on. Both Holden and Appleton said, in one of their first interviews, that they were 'known' for developing players. While on the subject, so did Adkins and Garner. I believe that all of those Managers left with a payoff. Nice work if you can get it. You could argue that the club have been incompetent in believing that the managers could deliver on that they promised at interview stage. However, it does seem a little rich to take a job, promising to make the club's strategy work, and then decide, once you have your feet under the table, that you need a new, more expensive, budget than you agreed to work with. We will never know what the truth is, or what was said (promised) by both parties when the Managers were appointed, but what we do know is that all of the Managers have ended up asking for more resources and then been sacked. In all of the hyperbole and sentiment, people forget just how bad we were last August as Holden went off piste with his 3-5-2 approach. To be fair Holden had no choice but to give Academy players a run out due to injuries and takeover delays. That was then. This weekend we've not only dropped two points but also seen a certain wag on another forum question why Methven and SE7 have done nothing about injuries. They've recruited a Director of Performance from Brighton the other week. I'd suggest that if we wanted an immediate resolution then they should have recruited somebody born in Nazareth! 😉 Some stay true to form and blame the manager, the Technical Director and trash the players. Others choose to frame the question as what could should be done by the end of January. And my answer hasn't shifted from a week ago. Strengthen the spine of the team. Not because Hector and Jones are shite but because we have no strong cover. Same at CDM, No. 10 centre forward AND on the wing. We also need Appleton to demonstrate over time that he can improve the football. That's XG, pace, precision etc. More generally attractive, effective attacking football. Securing 76 points across the season shouldn't be a big ask for a club with our budget. Three or four effective changes to our top 15 players should get us back on track. Let's see the XG and points per game once the window closes. |

Securing 76 points across the season shouldn't be a big ask for a club with our budget. Three or four effective changes to our top 15 players should get us back on track. Let's see the XG and points per game once the window closes. SE7 Partner appointed Holden 🤦♂️ 5 months is nonsense. I’m hearing that Andy Scott doesn’t like “back chat”, so it will be interesting to see how Appleton’s comments are received at the portacabins at Sparrows lane. Happy to leave this now until January, I think we almost all agree that Appleton is spot on with his assessment. I've been highly critical of Appleton. However, I'm impressed he has the balls to tell it as it is. It may well end in him getting the sack, but he'll get a nice pay off. The plus for him is there is no stigma in getting the boot at Charlton. We're such a dysfunctional club. Ps, I still think Appleton is useless as a football manager 😀 |

It plays out one of two ways. The club is in support of a major investment, and it is in the process or
he knows it isn't going to happen and is engineering an exit and payoff.
If Methven's comments on fans expecting high investment is nonsense from his podcast is to be taken as policy then ..taxi for Appleton

I predicted at the time of his unwelcome appointment that Appleton would get 25 games, and I believe he has now had 19 of them.
A tonking at Barnsley on Saturday along with his little outburst this week will no doubt push him closer to the exit.
I’d imagine the contingency plan will be “club legend” Jason Pearce in the hot seat next. It’s not as if we haven’t tried the club legend route for at least 18 months now …

One could argue that GFP / SE7 Partners have been incompetent but that sounds a tad previous given that they've been in charge for less than five months and have replaced Holden. In all of the hyperbole and sentiment, people forget just how bad we were last August as Holden went off piste with his 3-5-2 approach. To be fair Holden had no choice but to give Academy players a run out due to injuries and takeover delays. That was then. This weekend we've not only dropped two points but also seen a certain wag on another forum question why Methven and SE7 have done nothing about injuries. They've recruited a Director of Performance from Brighton the other week. Anyway the next 12 months are going to be interesting and I don’t sadly mean on the pitch as always when it comes to CAFC. If there is failure on the pitch combined with actual customers in the stadium dwindling I wonder want the major players/backers/yanks are going to do ? Will they say ‘hmm I like this project and want it to succeed and replace the likes of Scott, Charlie boy or just sell/let it go pop. Also I have noticed that a number of our playing squad has liked Dean Holdens latest instagram post about how to go about handling owners. Is there decent in our ranks? |

1- invest and push for promotion if you genuinely feel it can happen
2- bring in one or two players to bolster the squad but start again after the season ends with a view to being strong the following season.. and risk supporters apathy..
Ultimately, it depends on how badly you want success

Ultimately, it depends on how badly you want success Last January the transfer activity was, we were told, to clear out the dead wood and prepare for this season. Something tells me that we will be told the same in February. To be fair to those making the decisions, it is so unlikely that we will make the playoffs this season (just like it was last year) that we, probably, should be making signings with next season in mind. It just feels like we have wasted a whole year. Much of that is on Sandgaard, but not all of it! |

Building for next season is fine, but surely it’s sensible to start by securing your better players on new contracts ?
There’s no point in signing two more Carlos Kickaball squad fillers in January, if George Dobson and CBT are allowed to walk away for free.
I’ve yet to see anyone explain - particularly those still willing to give SE7 Partners a chance - why two of our better players have been allowed to let their contracts run down like this .
CBT is being linked with Portsmouth, Hull City & Huddersfield Town today - his agent is busy, even if Andy Scott isn’t.
While some will gaslight about Xg and points per games etc, others are more focused on our measly 10th place league position, our recent sub 6,000 home attendance, and asking WTF is the plan here ?
The minimum requirement for Scott & Rodwell in January must be to secure Dobson to a new contract, and to sign a Championship standard right back, centre half to partner Jones, a winger if CBT leaves, and a proper partner for May, who’s name is not Tedic.
As we are told that the owners want to build for the medium term, these new signings must be permanent players on deals, players here for the long term who the fans can build a rapport with.
We don’t need any more low grade kids / crocks / loans.

I think if the Board are up front now and say, that the aim is next season and 2 windows to have a challenging side , then that would be accepted.
What will cause even further reaction is usual,dross in at the last minute and the ;couldn't get so and so 'over the line'.
Mind you things are not going too well at Harris's 'big club' up the road. The realisation of relegation looming and no investment there!
