Just not inspired by the idea of Powell, style of play was pretty basic and habitual like for like subs on 70 mins Hopefully he is more experienced but his last managerial jobs he was terrible I can’t help but agreed to some degree after having some thought on it. For us fans it’s a great appointment due to the pass successes and our affiliation with Chris. But look beyond that, apart from a few good seasons with us he hasn’t achieved much and did lack tactical nous here and there. His early days in charge were horrific when he inherited a squad. The same as what will happen now if he comes in. Albeit he has a January window this time around. Couple this with the fact he has been out of the hot seat for 4 years now. It’s a massive gamble but a popular gamble!

Powell will be a much more well rounded coach with his experience since leaving us. I think it'd be a good appointment BUT may take a few windows given his history.

The initial approach to Powell was insulting enough. To go back in and offer perm now will need a bloody good reason to explain why they only wanted him initially on a short term deal. We wanted you on a try before you buy deal, so we don’t have to pay you as much as Dean when we sack you.

Said to have been a “mistake” making the offer as interim.

Why was it insulting? Can someone explain please?
Powell hasn’t managed for years. None of his managerial jobs since leaving us have gone well. I don’t remember playing very good football under him either. I get the fact we got over 100 points but I remember a lot of 1-0’s.
He’s been coaching at a high level but only assistant manager roles for a while. I think there is a reason for that.
It could work out but I can also see it being dreadful. Being a club legend it also then makes it harder to get rid if things don’t work out.
We need a stable manager signing. Someone to build a long term plan with. I don’t see that being Powell.
For those that are shouting for him to be back. Why? Please explain.

I’d have him for sure he’s exactly what we need. Players will jumpy through hoops for him I do know this but I also remember his first half season with him when we were shocking. We then literally bought the best players in the league for the next which was great and fair play to Powell he pulled in yann which proved a master stroke The championship season we did ok but that final league position was cemented with a good end when teams were on the beach. we never really threatened I also remember the FA cup quarter final and it was a shocking line up . Travelling home that day I was pissed with Powells tactics or lack of and at the end season was just dismal he deserved to get the boot. Then he achieved terrible results at Huddersfield and Southend Loved Powell the player and the man but as a manager I have my reservations

Airman has said it's not true regarding Powell on Twitter but I am not convinced he is as well connected as he use to be.

What Airman said on CL: I’m confident that it’s not true at this point that the club have gone back to Chris Powell. If people are being briefed otherwise then they should doubt the integrity of their sources.

A number of managers we're interested have done well at one club and bad elsewhere. Might as well go for Chris as one of those, at least the club he did well at was us.

Chris Powell, Lee Bowyer, Nigel Adkins and now Dean Holden all share a common strength and inadequacy. They would all seem to have been decent man-managers but were tactically lacking. Many of the very top managers have both attributes.
Nigel Adkins was very successful in partnership with Andy Crosby but failed badly with us when we foolishly split them up. Andy Crosby's Part Vale are now sitting in 7th place in our division.
Alan Curbishley had strong proactive coaches. We need to heed that lesson. If we employ a manager that is short of tactical nous, without a very good coach, we will probably struggle again.

Leaburn returns and things should get much better. Our XG conceded and set pieces are both probably bottom six, but with a top six budget. We need a new manager AND coaching team who can focus on one or two formations as well as deciding our best first XI. We have Fleetwood on Saturday where Pearce can start this process then the international break. Therefore plenty of time to assess the squad, make choices and coach the side before our second September game.

I had a big disagreement about this last week and it really pissed me off how somebody can pluck positives out of something that means sweet FA in the grand scheme of things. Perhaps the owners should start looking at the league table instead of the stats table. That said you explain it well and not with rose tinted glasses on.

As we’ve discussed seriouslyred , I think you’re looking for positives where they simply don’t exist. It’s highly debatable whether Xg stats are statistically significant after just five matches, but even if they were I don’t think you can say “in open play our Xg is very good”. According to Opta Analyst our Xg from open play is 5.41 or 1.082 per match. That translates into less than fifty goals over the course of the season. I agree with the rest of your post, as I typically do. It’s unfortunate that the unnecessary boosterism of the first two sentences tends to undermine it. We can all agree that we need some better coaching and a great deal more tactical awareness. Let’s hope Andy Scott can find a strong candidate and get them over the line.

I’d add that very good coaching and strong tactical nous is even more important if the intention is to follow a player development strategy rather than field a First XI comprised entirely of finished articles. Looking back on our two recent promotions from League One, in 2011-12 and 2018-19, under Powell and Bowyer respectively, it’s very clear that we had two groups of outstanding players and that while we had a terrific esprit de corps in both seasons, neither manager needed to ‘add much value’ from a coaching perspective.

We can all agree that we need some better coaching and a great deal more tactical awareness. Let’s hope Andy Scott can find a strong candidate and get them over the line. According to the site I'm looking at our XG for from all play is 1.56 goals per game. Or 7.8 goals over five games as opposed to five goals scored. This equates to 72 XG for over the season and a point I've made elsewhere is that September will double the games played showing us whether 1.56 per game is a new trend or an anomoly. By the way 1.56 is in the top six. However, our XG conceded at 1.43 per game or 7.2 over five games has converted to 8 real goals and is very close to Cheltenham who have the third worst XG conceded in the division in the division Not looked at how much of this is down to set pieces but we've all watched the games. Perhaps we might find agreement on what is a relevant sample size - somewhere between 10 and 15 games? reamsofverse I see your reply. All I would say is that CAFC have typically had a mid-table XG of 1.1:1.1 over the last couple of years and we have been bang average. For MOST clubs the XG ends up very close to real goals over a season. There are certainly outliers every season. Just as there are fans who prefer not to look at XG data as they feel the picture painted is way too incomplete.

You make a very good additional point there.
In both of our promotion years we had a nucleus of seasoned pros who knew their way around a game of football. We can all reel off the names of the players that were likely to be confident of their positions in and around the matchday XI in each season.
Our current squad is made up almost entirely of young players and relatively new arrivals, who are all trying to establish themselves in the team at the same time. Very different.
Another reason why, at this point in particular, we need to have a strong, respected, and sound voice of guidance in place, both at Sparrows Lane and from the first to the final whistle of each game.

Very true in that the two 2023 windows under Scott have seen 75% of Garner's matchday squad sold, released or loaned out. Mmm they didn’t cut the mustard at Pompey we looked a far better team than they did in our two 2022/23 fixtures. They also struggled at Huddersfield and you have to go back to their Lincoln years for when they galvanised both the football club and the town in general. So I’m far from thrilled at the prospect of their appointment but as always will back them on match days out of hope but with far less expectation.

Cowley 7/4 now Bookies know.Expect an announcement tomorrow. As Reams said interview went well so looks like it's The Cowley Brothers. Didn’t they say yesterday that they were interviewing candidates today and tomorrow? Hopefully Powell somehow upstages all of them. I know he divides opinions here, but the Cowleys aren’t the answer and not is Appleton. Leam Richardson like Powell, both unwittingly spent money the club didn’t really have to gain promotion. Perhaps he’d be on a par, but who knows. Darren Moore who’d be my preferred choice in all this, is never going to join. He knows a better option will come up as the manager sack race progresses. Just my thoughts.

I’ve seen people question them tactically, but it’s always been said that they are decent, likeable people.
