Not read anything positive from Sunderland fans. I hope he has some kind of positive attribute, if only as a Pratleyesque workhorse. My worry is if he turns out to be a dud we don’t persist with him Watson style just because we signed him, but can drop him Schwartz style if he is either a liability or blocking the progress of a home grown player. Every player principally plays if the team wins, the wins are the absolute priority.

Welcome George and good luck to him. Can't say I know anything about him but let's see what he can do.

Particularly interesting signing as nobody can really say they know much about him, could be anything. As I've said on a separate thread, I have a good feeling for some unknown reason.
Welcome George.
It's certainly a position that we needed to strengthen and bring in someone more youthful.
Can't help but find the 2 year contract length a little strange. If he goes on to play well for two seasons, he could go for free. Something I thought the club were trying to avoid happening again like it has before.

Maybe if he has a good first 6 months/year they'll look to extend - on the other hand if it doesn't work out we haven't lost much as he was a free

Interesting signing.
It seems to me that, very crudely, there are two types of player recruitment strategy. You either pay the market rate for a player who is (at least by common consent) 'proven' at the level you want him to play OR you take a view (i.e. that differs from others) and sign a player you believe 'will prove' he can play at the level you want and who represents 'good value for money'. In the first strategy you're looking to buy success and in the second to outperform your wage bill.
This signing seems to be very clear evidence of the second of those strategies. A good friend who supports Sunderland sent me the following when I asked him, "Lee Johnson put him out on loan to Wimbledon second half of last season so clearly not in his plans. Supposed to have done OK at Wimbledon." When I probed for a clearer view he said, "He was mediocre."
Let's hope Adkins, Gallen and Roddy, along with any analytics we're using, are right and that Lee Johnson is wrong.
Either way, good luck to him.

I presume around the club the shortening of his name will be Dobbo rather than Dobbie.

Welcome George , great signing imo , young and a position of need and if you ignore the worst football judges in the world (the Sunderland fans) , then most of the rest of the thoughts on his play are very positive..

I think he has been pretty impressive for every club except Sunderland…..especially at Walsall where he won player of the year and also Wimbledon who’s fan base were keen to have him back next season Sometimes for a multiple of reasons it just doesn’t work out for some players at some clubs..

George Dobson, a really solid, old fashioned English name more akin to footballers of the 30’s and 40’s. The type of chap who would do a shift in the factory, go to the game on the bus, wear boots with toe caps and studs with nails. After the game he’d go home, have a fish supper, pickled egg and a number of pints of heavy. And back to work the next day.
Welcome George, looking forward to seeing you play. Nice looking lad, sensible haircut and no ink. Lovely.
Can’t you tell I’ve not had much to do today! 🤣

Good luck George.
I'd usually be nervous signing players from the reserves of teams in the same division.
But because its Sunderland, I'm dismissing this concern.
The amount of good quality players that haven't done the business on Wearside is high. It is a basket-case club on the playing side so don't be too concerned.
More telling is how keen AFC were to get him back.
Right age, right CV. Just the Sunderland blip. He could blossom nicely with us.

Dobson was Charlton’s unsung hero against Crawley by Daniel Emery - 11:25am Charlton put on a show on Tuesday night as they produced a magnificent display against Crawley in the EFL Trophy, winning 6-1. The Addicks have had a disappointing start to the 2021/22 campaign and this result could help lift the confidence heading into the rest of the season. Nigel Adkins’ side lost four of their first five competitive fixtures and picked up one solitary point in a 0-0 draw with Sheffield Wednesday on the opening day. Their first League One victory came last weekend with a 2-0 win over Crewe Alexandra, with Charlton following that up with an exceptional 6-1 win against Crawley. Josh Davison scored twice, with Corey Taylor, Elliot Lee and Mason Burstow also scoring, along with an own goal from Crawley’s George Francomb. Davison and the other goalscorers will take the acclaim for finding the back of the net, but there was a player in Charlton’s midfield who was the unsung hero with his performance in the middle of the park – George Dobson. The 23-year-old, who arrived from Sunderland in the summer, put on a superb display in midfield as he dominated the game. He recorded a SofaScore rating of 7.9 for his showing, the highest out of all the players who failed to get on the scoresheet – with goals, of course, boosting the ratings of the goalscorers. Per SofaScore, Dobson won the majority of his duels on the pitch – winning seven of his 12 contests, six of 11 on the ground and one out of one in the air. His key defensive stats, however, are where the true excellence of his performance lay. He made three clearances, five tackles, two blocks and eight interceptions over the course of 90 minutes. To put that into perspective, Ian Maatsen’s average of 4.5 tackles and interceptions per game in League One was the highest in the Charlton squad last season. Dobson managed a combined 13 tackles and interceptions against Crawley, illustrating his dominance in midfield.Whilst it is easy to be attracted to the players who scored the goals, Dobson was the one winning the ball back and initiating the attacks for Charlton. Without his incredible work in midfield, the rest of the team may not have had the opportunities to go on and score the goals they did, whilst the ex-Black Cats man also registered an assist for his troubles as well. This is why he was the unsung hero for Adkins on Tuesday night. However, the Addicks boss will now be wanting to see a similar style of display more consistently from the beast in League One going forward. www.footballfancast.com/charlton-athletic-news/dobson-charlton-davison-crawley-efl-trophy-adkins-league-one

If George played well in L1 this year for Wimbledon then he should be fine for us.

That’s interesting hairyhotdog Thanks for sharing. I was there last night. It was a very enjoyable evening, but I wouldn’t read too much into either the result or the performance. Crawley seemed to have quite a bit of the ball and, at times, moved it around nicely, but were very poor. Their defending was awful and when our players ran at them they seemed unable to cope. Bizarrely, given that we won the game 6-1, I’m not sure any of our players really stood out. Dobson is all action and was certainly involved a lot last night, but I felt he showed a lack of quality at times. I was pleased for Davison. He worked very hard and took his two goals very well, though even here Crawley’s defenders stood off him and gave him a lot of time. Don’t think anyone said to Nigel Adkins ‘you’ve got to pick me’, other than Elliot Lee, perhaps.

Worth remembering that Crawley are 20th in League Two.
Dobson will be a handy squad player for the Cups this season, but from I’ve seen of him live he’s not good enough with the ball at his feet to be a regular for us.

I may be in the minority here but I think Dobson has done ok so far, especially as a young new player settling into a new club….He was pretty outstanding last night and you can see there is a player in there….especially if he has better technical players such as Arter and Lee around him in the middle of the park…..I don’t think we should be writing this lad off at all

Doesn't matter what the figures say on our contract offer. Andy Scott is the problem not the salary that's been offered.
Remove him and Dobbo stays in my opinion.
