Just as the majority on here thought:
Sheffield Wednesday’s points deduction is for next season.

Can’t remove the full stop at the end of the thread title.
Keep doing it out of habit.

Why not this season? They had an unfair advantage against the other teams. If Charlton has any balls they should take it to court along with hull, Wigan etc..

Well, that's Charlton's relegation confirmed I assume. At least we know where we stand.
Even if Wigan win their appeal it will be Barnsley who pay the price.
I guess any points deduction for Derby County will also be next season now.

Bottle jobs EFL. They said themselves the season isn’t officially over until after the playoff final, so why not this season and why no consistency when two of the relegated teams have already received sanctions? Absolute joke, but completely predictable. Watch Wednesday go and spend big now.

EFL bottled it, there's a surprise. It's only little old Charlton going down.

Surely Wigan will sue the EFL for relegating them and not Sheffield Wednesday

I think if relegation was rescinded, we'd be on a hiding to nothing next year in the Championship.... I'd rather re group in League 1 and start again....

I was thinking along less principled lines, where we potentially have no manager, cant sign anyone etc

This is a cop out by the EFL ... they were charged in NOV 19 fir god sake any punishment had to be this season ..
I hope we lodge an appeal and seek legal action hopefully Wigan will do the sane given their punishment was implemented within a couple of weeks not 8 months
Teams just laughing at EFL and the championship will continue conning , cheating it’s way trying to get into the prem

Pathetic. To be fair though, this isn’t the EFL’s decision, it’s the decision reached by the Independent Commission. It will be interesting to see the reasoning for deducting the points next season. I doubt it will be coherent. Wednesday have obviously got off lightly. 55-60 points next season will keep them up and no doubt they’ll spend the money needed to make sure that happens.

Disgraceful, but unfortunately entirely expected by the EFL, a complete inept non government.
How can an offence that was charged in November be carried over to next season ? Simple ... be the tortoise like EFL and take so long to make a decision and announce it, that the season has ended
I hope Wigan will take action, or even Barnsley follow up their threat of legal action. How is this a punishment for Wednesday, who continue to benefit from the greater revenue of the Championship, and get another chance next season. If they survive , then they have avoided any punishment.
Ow can the EFL be allowed to continue to operate in such an amateurish and ineffective manner. Something needs to change, for the good of the Football League.

Regardless if we would’ve stayed up or not. This is pathetic from EFL.

I can't figure out if this is a stitch up, or a bottle job. Small wonder the championship is a financial lunatic asylum if this is an example of the governance.
No consistency at all with the Wigan case. Either the EFL clubs agree to an independent body, or this fiasco will continue!

Not sure if this is true Mundell. I thought, although I may be wrong that the Independent Commission decided the penalty but the EFL decides what season it will be levied.

It’s standard procedure, but I agree it’s a complete cop out. I remember Richard Scudamore being asked to justify the decision not to dock West Ham over the Tevez fiasco. Remember, West Ham continued to play him even after they knew it was a problem. Scudamore had no explanation. He simply said he’d followed the rules and appointed an independent commission which had made the decision. I read the commission’s report. It was absurd and beyond parody. No self-respecting organisation can outsource key decisions, but the fact the EFL does tells us everything we need to know.

'Considering an appeal?'
ESI trying to worm a way out of their own self-inflicted mess. In reality, it was their ownership of the club that caused relegation. Personally I can't see any appeal being upheld, as Wednesday have been punished, even if it was a bottle job!

If we had been in Sheff Wed position .... 100% certain we would be relegated tonight .... it’s scandalous how EFL run this league

Personally I can't see any appeal being upheld, as Wednesday have been punished, even if it was a bottle job! How have they been punished? They get to stay in the Championship with the economic advantage that goes with it. They can spend what they want to build a team to get the required points to ensure they stay up next season. So where is the punishment? They havn't been punished at all. Relegation would have been punishment with loss of revenue.
