We have a difference between now and 8 years ago.
Nicky Bailey missed the crucial penalty in the playoff semi-final then jumped to the Championship anyway to join Middlesbrough leaving us stuck in League One. He was 26 at the time too. Never got anywhere with them and after joining "that lot" ended up at non-league Sutton United
Patrick Bauer scored us the winning goal in the playoff final, then moved to another club within the Championship.

Will always be a Charlton legend, not the best move from a football point of view but he went where the money was, most footballers will go where the money is. Everything comes down to a pound note in the end.
Not the biggest loss to us though, i think he can be replaced.

Alex Neil the big reason why Bauer left Charlton for Preston By Huw Thomas Cross htcross10 Sports Reporter
Patrick Bauer admits it was the ambition of Preston that swayed his decision when leaving Charlton.
The Lilywhites signed the German last week on a free transfer from Addicks, beating off a host of Championship admirers, including a new offer from Charlton themselves.
Bauer, 26, who spent four years at The Valley and scored the goal that clinched promotion for Lee Bowyer’s men in the League One play-off final revealed it wasn’t easy leaving The Valley, but ultimately he wanted to join a club harbouring the same ambitions as himself.
'Never-Easy'
"It was never an easy decision," he told LancsLive.
"We got promoted and the people seemed to really like me, but I really like the ambition of Preston.
“We got promoted in the Play-Off Final and I scored in extra time, which got us promoted, which was a very special moment and I am happy that I could finish that chapter with a successful moment.
"It is four years ago since I last played in the Championship and I got injured in that season and we got relegated. I have had three seasons in League One and I think I have improved and I am ready to improve in the Championship."
Blackburn Rovers and Wigan were also rumoured to be interested in the former Maritimo man but in manager Alex Neil, Preston had a boss who’s vision Bauer believed in.
"I had a few clubs interested but the conversations with the manager were really good.
"He is a very young manager and already has two promotions, one with Hamilton and one with Norwich.
“He has a good record and from my position I think he can improve my game.
“We have a good squad already and they had a bit of bad luck with injuries last season.
"There is always talks but from when I spoke to Preston I just wanted to join Preston."
Excited
Charlton’s promotion to the second tier was thought to be the only way of keeping their defensive rock at The Valley beyond his current deal, but with Lee Bowyer operating on the lowest budget in the division, losing Bauer was inevitable with the financial clout of teams in the Championship.
Bauer, despite admitting the difficulty in leaving London where he was a mainstay in the backline, said he and his family were excited to get underway at Deepdale as he returned to pre-season training this week
"It is the same everywhere, you have to fight for your place and I will do that.
"We are looking for houses but we won't rush, it has to be the right choice.
"It's very exciting.
“We are moving up from London and we are looking forward to it.
“I am really excited to meet up with the players."

I think players who have left have scored as many goals this pre-season as all our remaining players.

Read what I said again.
During his time with us, Bauer was the highest scoring defender at the club, meaning that no other defender scored more goals while at the club at the same time as him.
Most of those defenders are still with us so I would have thought we would have searched for a CB who is renowned for getting among the goals but we haven't.

Nabi needs to weigh in with some goals, apparently he's one of the best finishers at the club in training and add to that his size and strength.

Taking nothing away from it’s importance, but didn’t Bauer only score the one goal last season . I don’t really think that tally will take much improving on by one of our other defenders .
Even Pearce is capable of scoring the occasional goal. Oshilaja might chip in with a few, and Naby should also.
Funny to think we have a young and inexperienced right wing back who is our top scorer in pre season .

I doubt we extended Pearce for even half what we lost Bauer for. No one in the sport of football rates them equal, or they would be paid the same. Bauer is apparently on £6000-8000/week, depending on the source. If anyone for any club wanted Pearce for that wage, his agent would be screaming for a transfer. Since he is not, no one is. Which means the marketplace of professional football has voted on their relative values.

Patrick did well for us and left us on a high..Thank you Patrick.. I just dont think Patrick Bauer left over Preston's ambition it was I think totally about money. He I assume was well paid on championship wage whilst we were in league one?.as for four years I assume his salary was fine. My guess is if he finishes his contract in Preston he would return to Germany for his young child to start school. Also does anyone know exactly what the players earn?.. I doubt the exact terms are ever known in the public domain and neither do I think it should..

Makes total sense, he paid his dues to us and was instrumental in getting us up to the Championship again. The short shelf life of a footballer dictates that money will be a driving factor- if the timing for schooling back in Germany etc works out then fair play.

I am frustrated we are losing some of our best players to clubs in our own division and perhaps taking the dregs they no longer want from clubs in our division, like Matty Taylor, who has scored 2,1 and 4 goals in three seasons in The Championship. This is no way to stay up.

I agree too; Alou Diarra was a superb player, especially in midfield. Slightly wasted at the back but I suspect that was a move to save his legs a bit.
