The investors want Varney involved - indeed he was recommended to them specifically because of his Charlton knowledge, experience and connections. But in 2016 Varney no longer has any Charlton connections - his bizarre behaviour has resulted in them all being severed and turned him into a pariah as far as the club's current ownership and board are concerned. His alleged investors will know that and if they are serous they would have dropped him and pursued their interest via a different route using KPMG, Goldman Sachs, Deloite or whoever. It appears that they have not done so, probably because they recognise the club is not for sale and so it would be a waste of their time and money.

The club is allegedly not up for sale. Duchatelet would not telegraph a strong desire to sell the club as this would undermine the sale price. None of us know what is the mind of Duchatelet. Katrien Meire barely knows what Duchatelet does from one minute to the next, so how would anyone apart from Duchatelet's close family know ? I bet even they don't know what inside that'genius'mind.
One thing is true that Duchatelet does not like to lose money, and there will come a time when a failing business that is haemorrhaging money that is reflecting badly on his business reputation will be easier to let go of than to keep.
I only hope that there will be something left of the club by the time he does go.

The club is worth very little in League 1 so it stands to reason that it won't be sold until Championship status has been confirmed. And that will either be when we stay up or win promotion from League 1 in 12 months time.
Peter Varney has not only leaked emails but has also appeared on several CARD videos. What he neglects to mention is that he was the CEO in charge when we had Dowie, Reed and Pardew getting relegated and that the losses after that relegation add up to £70M.
The irony is that yesterday's leaflet refers to a string of inadequate coaches and players being appointed / acquired. And yet the "inadequate" Riga and "inadequate" squad have just delivered 10 points from five games!
For sure the club have signed some poor players but you can't argue with our first 18 at this point in time.
One could go into detail about changes made to the club since Varney left including a major sponsorship deal with UoG which is hardly a new institution or partner. But that's for another time / another thread.
Right now we have two winnable away games coming up and if Riga delivers four points he will continue the 2 points per game trend and close the gap.
Not only that but he will be on course to deliver survival. And the performances to achieve that will be the basis of a real challenge next season.
Is VotV going to continue to describe that as "inadequate"? I expect they will but they won't have the league table and the fans' fear of relegation to leverage.

I thoroughly enjoyed the victory yesterday. I retain hope to the last possible minute that whilst hope remains that Charlton can escape the drop. Like every other Charlton supporter jumping up and down like a loon when the winning goal went in yesterday, want Charlton to stay up.
If by some extreme good fortune Charlton recover, it won't change the fact that the season started with a wholly inadequate thin squad, appalling choice of Fraeye and a poor January window to fix the problems Duchatelet started Charlton out with this season.
If Charlton do drop into League One, lets not kid ourselves that this squad will bear any resemblance to the decent team that was on the pitch yesterday. Lookman gone, Gudmundsson gone at the bear minimum. Fanni / Motta / Makienok / Suk Young gone. It will be starting with a new team again. It maybe another gamble of players thrown together. It is different to when Charlton went down under Parkinson, who was putting together a team that started League One with 6 wins in a row.
So yesterday's team looked like a proper team, but how long in the season has got to get to this stage ? Why must every stage of the Duchatlet ownership be a massive gamble with the league status of the club ? That's what I call inadequate and whether Charlton remain in the Championship or end up in League One, that fact will remain.

I know Seriously Red that you are an optimistic type character, but assuming that Duchatelet will behave rationally in producing a team that will quickly get promoted back to the Championship (so he can sell) is a massive leap, given what has happened so far.

There is optimism and there is just plain blocking out reality. Im not sure how you can make the leap that RD will behave rationally where the team is concerned as we have seen the opposite consistently.

Spot on FunkyThings. I agree with the protests as it's bevome cleat in transfer window after transfer window, that no one is learning from the mistakes and RD will carry on appointing crony mates of his like Fraeye as long as he has strength to point at them and say 'you next'. He tried to foist an unknown Serb as a follow up to Interim Fraeye, and I'm sure there's plenty more dross to come.

Wasn't going to post but to break up the insults you receive for voicing your opinion I have to say I'm with you on this SR...
Everyone seems to be so much in the know on here and CL it seems like they've hacked into RD computer and opened the file "what I'm going to do with Charlton". Still as long as they keep patting themselves on the back with their safety in numbers campaign then I guess they'll be happy. I for one thinks for myself as SR seems to but that doesn't give you any right to be a keyboard warrior, just a disagreement will suffice...

But if you are going to say things like you cant argue with our first 18 when we are where we are is just plain mental and I for one will comment if I choose anytime such a ridiculous statement that clearly contravenes the obvious facts is made, simply in the hope that they might wake up and look at reality. We are where we are because of the utter madness that this club has become and I find it increasingly difficult to take anyone seriously who cannot see that and keeps making blind excuses for their own ignorance via insane statements. If anyone wants to barrack me about what I say then I say fair enough. If you are going to make statements expect someone with an opposing opinion to comment. Its not a knitting forum. But your missing his point...
He was stipulating that our current 18 is a good enough standard to be competitive in this league and it's starting to show.
Yes recruitment was poor but has improved since Riga has arrived and also players who have been slated are also performing. We have had injuries to our best players with a thin squad so if these factors had been right at the start of the season then we wouldn't be where we are, but that's history and the fact is that we are currently in good form with a strong squad which is the message which was posted by SR.....

It may be true that we have a decent first 11 and a fair subs bench now that nearly everybody is fit again.
There are definite signs that Jose Riga is putting together a run which may well see Charlton in the top half of the form table for the rest of this season. After a slow start Riga is now doing better than I expected he would, and perhaps he deserves more credit than I have ever given him for what he did back in 2014.
I'll go so far as to say that if Jose Riga had been our head coach since August we would likely have been mid-table all season, or had he been appointed immediately after Guy Luzon was dismissed we would be out of the bottom 6 by now. I may not agree with the method or the circumstances by which he was selected for the job, but credit to the man where credit is due.
However, responsibility for all the coaching failures between Jose Riga's departure in the summer of 2014 and his reappointment thirteen matches ago rests squarely with Roland Duchatelet.
If Jose Riga pulls off an almost impossible escape from Relegation this season, his boss will owe him a huge debt of gratitude. I don't know whether Duchatelet will honour the spirit of that debt and allow Jose Riga an opportunity to build his own squad; history suggests he will not. But nobody will be more deserving of the chance to show Charlton supporters what he is really capable of than Jose Riga.
If Charlton are relegated, the fault will rest with Duchatelet rather than with Riga or with the 'bad luck' of some player injuries. Those coaching failures I mentioned earlier, particularly the disastrous appointment of Karel Fraeye, will be what did the real damage.
An additional thought, seeing as this is the CARD protest group thread.
I don't actually know whether CARD want Charlton to be relegated or not. Being fellow Charlton supporters, they face the same difficult question of whether it is right to wish harm upon the Club (relegation) in order to help hasten the departure of Duchatelet, their ultimate objective.
I cannot go that far myself. Like every other fan I am powerless to prevent it, or have any influence over whether it happens or not. If we do go down it will reinforce my belief that Charlton Athletic needs a new owner to give it any hope for a better future. But I am genuinely afraid that we will not bounce back from relegation this time.
Personally I would rather continue to oppose Duchatelet's ownership while we are still in the Championship, even if that makes such opposition less immediately popular. I'm not opposed to our owner just because the football has been crap. For me there are issues to do with respect for supporters and our identity & traditions which have little to do with the incompetence of our previous coaches or the poor quality of many recent player signings.
From the huge cheers and roars of encouragement I heard within the Valley as we pushed for the winning goal against Birmingham, I think I am not alone among protesting fans in wanting to see us pull off the Great Escape.

Bauer played 90 minutes for the U21s today. Sanogo has served a three match ban. Without these two our first 18 have won three out of the last five.
Nobody can take the appointment of Fraeye seriously but any further discussion can surely await the post mortem.
As for the "inadequate signings" and poor coaches after Riga? Last season we finished 12th with 14 wins and 14 losses.
Lots of people claim to be ITK. All I will say is that I've been at five of the last six games and the only decision I would fault is that we were far too cautious in the second half vs MK Dons.
Riga has just come out saying draws aren't much good and that ties with his approach: caution in the first half vs Brum followed by Lookman coming on. Then Jackson, then Makienok.
People must be blind if they can't see the rich vein of form we are hitting with Diarra back and Teixeira/Motta/Fanni added.
Our defence is no longer a joke. Aside from Burnley, Boro and Hull the rest of the Championship is of very similar standard.
The question is whether we run out of games. This because we really cannot afford to lose.
There is a downside to this run but I will come back to that later.

Nothing will be gained by things turning nasty. Nothing at all. What we don't want is to start next season on a minus because of fan behaviour. I believe relegation will hasten the departure of KM but not the owner. So if we are relegated then we need to bounce back straight away. The club becomes more attractive to buyers again.

Lose Saturday which means we are more or less down I think things will get nasty. Since there is still no communication between supporters and the Club, and now surely the vast majority of supporters feel disconnected and estranged from the regime, I think it is highly likely that confirmation of relegation will be the catalyst for something potentially very unpleasant. It would be better for KM and the staff at the Valley if the relegation is confirmed at an away match. A backlash there will still be, but not on the scale of what might happen if we go down when the final whistle blows at a home game. It is impossible to predict what might happen, which is the scary part. Previous events may not give any real clue as to the amount of anger that will be vented. Aside from some admittedly crude chanting (which is entirely to be expected) most of the protests to date have been relatively restrained or subdued, even good natured to some extent. Anger there has been, frustration and a need to express unhappiness and let off steam. Yet hardly anybody has gone 'too far'. When matters really come to a head, how much restraint will the crowd still be willing to show? Nobody knows.

Completely agree. And I'd add that the ball is now in the owner's court. He knows exactly how the fans feel. The protests have done their job in that respect, at least for now, so that further demonstrations of fans' anger are unnecessary. The key question now is what is Duchatelet's next move going to be? Whether we like it or not we're going to have to wait until the summer to find out. Will there be a mass clear out of the existing squad, to raise funds and to cut the wage bill, or will the strategy be to retain as many first team players as possible in order to secure an immediate return to the Championship? While fans may think they know the answer to that question, in truth we don't. We'll have to wait to find out and further protests are not going to change the answer or increase the chances of a sale. If fans simply want to vent, fair enough, but going home to kick the proverbial cat can achieve that objective.
