Did you hate him as a player or a person? I respect the (different) opinion of his managerial prowess, but I'm baffled by the bitterness. Player or a person? Neither.....the answer is as a manager, the bitterness was born at Sheffield Utd, a day I shall never forget and certainly never forgive. Reams, Honest question...do you really HATE him? I accept your view, to which you are totally entitled, on Powell's ability as a manager, but hate just seems very strong based on his time as manager, and that one game in particular. What about the players who turned out at Bramhall Lane? Do you hate each of them to the same degree? I was there that day and it was awful, but no worse than watching us get ripped to pieces by Northwich Victoria when Parky as in charge. Do you hate him for that display? There re two things that would leave a bitter taste for me. and they are, not trying, and disrespecting the club. I don't think Powell is guilty of either.

Agree with your points and they are very well made, however after witnessing that display (i was there although I wished I wasn't!) It's hard to believe that Powell tried to win that game... we were 3rd best and there were only 2 teams playing! One of the worst most gutless displays I've seen from cafc, it just left a bad taste in my mouth from then on especially seeing as the next game was at Wembley.. that's what hurt the most. And that's how he will be remembered (by me at least). That's my opinion tho.

The performance was awful and of course it hurt as we were so close to Wembley, but I don't believe Powell wasn't trying to win. Only a week or so before Powell was hanging from the crossbar after the Wednesday win, and clearly enjoying the relief of victory (as he'd done at home to QPR). What manager wouldn't want a Wembley appearance on their C.V.? In my eyes he had sadly been beaten down by the whole takeover/Roland saga, and had the stuffing knocked out of him. I don't dispute that he had to go, that performance was flatter than a pancake, but to say he wasn't trying . . .I just don't see why he wouldn't.

My take on the matter is he new he was gone regardless of the result in which i believe he told the players before hand .They probably thought if Powell isn't going to lead us out at Wembley no one is .Just my opinion.Anyway really need to move on

This thread feels a bit like Groundhog Day, but nobody hated Powell. Nobody. Plenty hated the craven arselicking and politically correct shroud waving which went with their craven support of "Chrissy" ...middle class ninnies like our very own muttleycafc spring to mind here. Good albeit overrated player.Nice bloke. Media tart, Very average manager.

Have you forgotten his time playing as a left back and being Charlton's first England call up since Mike Bailey? Have you forgotten his time as a manager when we finished as Champions and finishing in a respectable position first season in the Championship without hardly no funds available?

Why did my comment get deleted What comment was that Don? I realised soon after the comment I was referring to was in another thread about Powell, all talk of the man should be stopped on here as it always ends in the same old boring argument.

Please don't tell me how or what to feel, I appreciate your opinion but don't try and change mine, he is the most boring, inept joke of a manager I have ever come across in football.. Reams, I respect your opinion, but I'm sure we could both name 50 managers now who are more pathetic, starting with Mr Dowie. It baffles me how anyone can feel more than slight annoyance towards a bloke who won us a trophy, got us to 9th in the Championship and then had one dire season. I also didn't care much for Dowie and Pardew....but you can say you didn't like them without the "Man love" hit squad rattling their sabers.

I have always disliked Curbishley immensely after our 1/4 final no show at Middlesbrough.

Lennie, Curbishley, Peacock and Powell.
I am 49, in my lifetime these fellas are the 'leading lights', no doubt about it.

Of course not but your only as good as your last game and his was a shocker, over the moon when he got sacked no matter what he did for us as a player which by the way is nowhere near what the real Legends achieved.. I'm one of the realists who cares much more about what the likes of Mendonca, Hunt, Kinsella, Robinson and Rufus did in a red shirt than what Powell did in a white one with three lions on it. Grown men wetting themselves at the thought of seeing an old flame again is embarrassing, I just hope nobody gets a load shot all over their back on Saturday the minute the some fans clap eyes on him.

Powell deserves a large raspberry when he walks out.
He left the team on its arse. Got lucky with the Jenkinson money in the Pie League, but horribly exposed in the Championship through rampant favourtism (Bradley Pritchard etc..)and negative, boring sideways football.

Lennie, Curbishley, Peacock and Powell. I am 49, in my lifetime these fellas are the 'leading lights', no doubt about it. Both Lennie and Curbs got us to the top level and kept us there. Without breaking the bank. I'm 49 too and as a kid I never expected top division football year after year. The issue with Powell is that there's a whole freaking soap opera. Even when Alex Dyer comes out last summer and states they didn't pick the best team, there's still an element maintains this was a principled stance ffs. No, management, players, board and fans have to pull in the same direction. So now we have Trust News running an exclusive interview with Powell on Saturday - beyond parody!
