www.charltonafc.com/news/charlton-complete-greg-docherty-signingCharlton Athletic are delighted to confirm the signing of midfielder Greg Docherty. The 27-year-old joins the Addicks following a four-year spell at Hull City, where he made 143 appearances and lifted the Sky Bet League One title during his debut season with the Tigers. Docherty has put pen to paper on a three-year deal, with a club option of an additional year, to become Charlton’s seventh signing of the summer. Manager Nathan Jones commented: “We’re really delighted to get this signing over the line, he’s someone we’ve been chasing for a long time, all through the summer. He’s a player that has been promoted from this league and has been a Championship player for a long period of time. He has real pedigree as a person, an athlete and a player. “He’s someone that we’re really thrilled to have acquired, again we’ve had to beat off a lot of opposition for his signature. He’ll add real competition, real strength, real leadership qualities to the team and there is big scope for him to develop and move forward with us.” Technical Director Andy Scott added: “Greg is a player who we have had a strong interest in since we came to the club and the fact that we have managed to secure his signature with the options he had is really pleasing. “He’s a player with lots of different qualities and is ideally suited to Nathan’s style. We’ve all worked very hard to get this over the line and Greg adds another very strong midfield option, bringing quality on the ball, tenacity, leadership, outstanding professionalism and game understanding to the group. “We look forward to seeing him in a Charlton shirt and I’m sure he’ll quickly become a fans’ favourite.” Born in Milngavie, Scotland, Docherty began his career at Hamilton Academical and progressed through the academy ranks to sign his first professional deal aged 16. In December 2013, he made his senior debut against Alloa Athletic at the age of just 17. The Scot would go on to make 108 appearances for the Accies prior to earning a move to Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers in January 2018. He featured 14 times for Rangers in the latter half of the 2017/18 campaign before moving to Sky Bet League One side Shrewsbury Town on loan. The midfielder netted 10 goals and registered 11 assists during a hugely-successful season with the Shrews, culminating in him being named as the club’s Player of the Year. Upon his return to Rangers, Docherty made a further five appearances in the Scottish League Cup and Europa League qualifying rounds prior to joining Hibernian on loan in January 2020. He immediately impressed at Easter Road, contributing three goals and five assists during the Coronavirus-hit campaign. Docherty completed a permanent move to Hull City in the summer of 2020 and quickly established himself as a fans’ favourite after starring in the Tigers’ Sky Bet League One title-winning campaign. He featured 41 times across all competitions during the following season as Hull retained their second-tier status. The former Scotland youth international continued his influence in 2022/23, making 36 appearances and scoring the Tigers’ Goal of the Season in a 3-1 triumph at Blackpool. Docherty arrives at The Valley having played a role last season for Hull, who missed out on the Sky Bet Championship play-off places on the final day.

So I’ll be honest it’s a great signing but what is his main role. Is he an 8 6 or 10? Because Coventry berry and dochery sounds great but is that too defensive unless berry can be a 10? Can someone clear me up on what we can expect from him and what our midfield 3 may look like?

In he's early career he played as a 10 but has not done that much in the last few year . He fits the system and style we have and Jones doesn't really play with a naturally number 10 he usually converts a winger there or one of the two 8s playing will play as a 10.

Very happy with this signing. I guess that means Dobbo won't be back as well.
Squad is coming together nicely!

We have been after the lad for few years under different managers. I'm glad for whatever scout has been pushing for us to bring him in has finally got a it done and convinced the manager that this is profile he is looking for.

Two 8s can work better to be fair with both rotating as to who pushes forward during a game while providing balance. Also provides a bit of variety in attacks

Lots of very positive views about Docherty from Hull fans commented on the CAFC F/B site…….
Posters on the Hull forum very complimentary about Jones and us as a club…..many saying Docherty had plenty of Championship clubs after him but chose us…..👍

GD an upgrade on GD. Good stuff.
PS The latter is reportedly in Wrexham right now having talks.
Perhaps Reams can get a signed photo for the Dobbo lovers on here?

That's the end of Dobson coming back. Agreed. My mate is a Hull die-hard....his view "he's a fighter and he'll get stuck in for you" Perhaps a Darren Pratley type.

A Scott signing then, not a Jones one!?!? Must be foisting him on Nathan with no say in it... Unbelievable!!! Where's my pitch fork and flaming torch?

Another centre midfielder, not bad at all. Has a decent shot on him from the looks of it. Happy with this one.

That's the end of Dobson coming back. I'm happy with that, Dobson didn't want to sign on with us, made a catastrophic error and now has his pick of league one clubs, we don't need or want anyone who isn't fully committed to the cause, I think the only reason Dobson bit down and played his socks off towards the end was to put himself in the shop window because I have no doubt he knew what he was gonna do when it came time to move to Hungary. I'd like to see another midfielder come in, maybe one who can operate out wide if needs be, maybe a loan wide player, another centre half and possibly a 1st choice keeper though I think he might give Mannion a go in goal. Would like to see maybe Wiredu come in as he is versatile.

The spine of the team is looking strong, with Small and Ramsay ripping down the lines as well, I can see us having a great season, well hoping!

Don’t be silly - well documented he wanted a 2 year deal (fair enough at his age) and we only offered a 1 (could have been 2/3 but it’s the same principle). He’s not greedy at all and has been a very fine player covering up the inadequacies of many of his team mates throughout his time at the club. Good luck to him wherever he ends up.

Can you imagine if we managed to sign this Doughty to go with Docherty? Would they compliment each other or would they get on each other's way doing the same runs etc.? Can they both play in the same team?
