Assuming Leaburn goes in January, I think once again we will be ripped off and not get his true value. He still has to prove his fitness over a period of time and until then I can't see anyone taking a financial risk on paying his true value, on top of that he still has to consistently prove his true ability. It would make sense if his contract was extended by twelve months, then if an acceptable offer comes along in January, fine. If not,he has until the summer to prove his true worth to others. But I guess the usual scenario will take place and we will be ripped off again.

Leaburn is an interesting one, if his parents were not so heavily involved in the club I would say there would be no way he would be signing an extension and he would be off for a fee in January with a likely proviso that he is loaned back to us until the end of the season….. I would imagine his parents would be in his ear saying to stay put for another season, the club has been really good to Miles with his development and rehabilitation and I just have a feeling that this young lad may repay that loyalty with a contract extension…..but then again doesn’t money always talk in the end……

Some players (and their agents) choose to run down their contracts- Bauer and Aribo did back in 2018/19. Others agree a sale. Whilst a third type of young player agrees a new deal, with an agreed buy out clause so that they retain control. It's unlikely he will stay unless the club really want it AND show real ambition to secure promotion. Enough to convince player, agent and parents that CAFC is the right choice. Given the value of a three or four year contract in the Championship, who would bet on Miles wearing our shirt next August? I think that Aribo, or his Agent, was a little deceitful when he was very coming to the end of his contract. I think he was, always, going to leave but kept that to himself. Bauer made no secret of his desire to go and, to his credit, Duchâtelet refused to sell him and he played a large part in us getting promoted. Methven has been rather outspoken about the need to sell players to maximise income. He has been very critical of Liverpool not selling Virgil van Dyke, for example. If he believes that a club like Liverpool should sell their very best players to not lose out on transfer income then I can’t see any scenario where we keep Miles until the summer in the hope that he agrees to stay. It’s a shame because there is something special about having the son of a past hero playing for us - and he is a game changer. However, despite Burstow’s lack of progress his bank balance has changed his life, forever. It’s difficult to turn down a, potentially, life changing opportunity, financially, especially for a young man that has missed the best part of two seasons with injury. A four year deal on, say, £15k a week and he is set up for life. If it doesn’t work out he will be allowed to move down the league, but will not have to take a pay cut. It would be difficult to justify recommending that Miles signs a new contract with us, unless the club offer him something like that and I don’t think we can, or should, be paying a player that kind of money. When it comes to Championship wages, Swiss Ramble ran an excellent summary analysis of Championship financials. Total wage bill for 2022/23 was £684M. So that gives an average of £1.15M pa or £22K per week. But a 20 year old 6'6 striker with pace, control and who knows where the goal is, will surely command considerably more. Not for us to speculate where he lands as what do we know about the market nor his potential progression. But it's a mature market and we can be sure that player, agent, parents and the club will have a good idea of what the market might pay. Ideally they find a win : win even when interests are not 100% aligned. And that Miles continues to hit the ground running this year, playing his part in us climbing the table whilst sharpening up how he presents in the shop window. If he stays all season and helps us to a Wembley play-off final then even better!
