Life is full of paradoxes and here’s another one. Right now many of the club’s fans wouid probably be very happy if Michael Appleton was sacked. Nevertheless, if that happens it would be a big red flag and the first genuinely alarming development since SE7 acquired the club. Appleton has lost three league games in sixteen. It’s not been great, to say the least, but does that record really justify mass hysteria? We don’t want short sighted, reactionary decision making. Unfortunately for me the first big red flag was flying high when Appleton was appointed....by far the biggest decision so far by the new SMT to identify and hire someone to oversee day-to-day first team coaching and matches, and they went for someone so mediocre both in terms of record but also personality, gravitas etc.. I made comments along these lines at the time not merely with hindsight.

I am old school and think stability is needed with managers. Appleton needs at least this window to bring in his OWN players, after this hopefully the rest of the season can improve. The point of the new structure is that there's no longer a concept of a manager's 'own players'. He should have some input into the process of course, and as an experienced coach in particular any extremely strong negative views on proposed players should be taken seriously, but ultimately it has to be the decision of Scott. It's perfectly reasonable however to argue that the structure is suboptimal and/or the people involved incompetent. Agree with you but have to replace has to be with will be. We're on the same page though.

As I saw it, when Thomas Sandgaard came in, he did mostly the right things, keeping Steve Gallen and also bringing Ged Roddy in. Ged Roddy didn't work out, but he was intended as a senior manager with experience in football, maybe something like Rodwell is now. The only major error Sandgaard made that season was bringing in Schwartz who was not up to it. But then we also signed Omar Bogle at some point that season. It seemed to me at the time that Ged Roddy wanted to play clever with the transfer market. He wanted Championship level players who had been released, but wanted to wait until the last moment so they would be "desperate" and sign for less. Bad strategy - other clubs signed the good players and we were left with mostly rejects. Nigel Adkins felt the most let down, and of course we were in the bottom 4 when he was sacked. Johnnie Jackson turned it around up to a point taking us to 13th, but it seems that after correctly letting go of Ged Roddy as well as Nigel Adkins, Sandgaard thought he could do a better job himself and appointed his son, and of course that led to 2 years of mediocrity, which is what we were hoping this new board would solve, but so far have not. I'd ask if the blame is mostly with Andy Scott or with Jim Rodwell, and would ask those to give an indication of how exactly they plan to get us up out of this mess. reamsofverse any chance of getting answers?

The first real red flag for me was the lack of investment in the last window. Whilst I concede it wasn't a full window I believe they still had just over two months to sign anything other than freebies and loans without the need to pad out the team with youngsters that aren't ready. Now they want to invest in January which is a month or so shorter than their last window.

They can't just sign anyone because there are financial rules in play that only allow us to spend 60% of turnover on player wages, and academy players don't count in that regard. Any money invested in the academy does not count in there either, so the "gifts" from the rich owners are to fund a great academy as well as provide the other 40%.
This is probably why it might take several windows to clear out the players who are on high wages but not performing.
It still doesn't explain why we can't beat Carlisle, Cambridge, Burton and Leyton Orient. It doesn't explain why we signed a top goalscorer only to move him to play right wing rather than as striker. It doesn't explain why players at our club do not run back properly to defend and perform basics.
If Corey Blackett-Taylor wants to attract big clubs to sign him, he has to show them what he can do for us.

It has taken both 2023 windows plus paying off Kirk the other week to clear out the Sangaard/ Gallen / Garner squad inherited by SE7. Scott and SE7 have chosen to sell, loan, not renew most of the Matchday 18 from 12 months ago. I've already posted thoughts on why December has been a disaster, and it's not the back five! The front six have not developed as an attacking threat plus some of the selections have been heavily criticised, especially at right wing. May at No. 10 has been a success but the obsession with playing Fraser rather than one of the Campbells or L. Watson is baffling. As a consequence, our attacking threat from set pieces and open play has been piss poor. Many might question Scott for recruitment of the squad and / or Appleton. But I can’t get past Appleton having demonstrably failed by not producing a win all month. That doesn't absolve Scott but IMHO it would be somewhat catastrophic to change the Technical Director within six months of a takeover. Especially when there's a window coming up to fix clear squad deficiencies.

I just think that the club’s budget has not been big enough to turn the existing squad into one that can compete. We don’t know how much has been made available - fees and wages, so it is possible that Scott has exceeded what should be expected. Until the expensive failures of the Sandgaard era have all been moved out it is not fair to compare the total wage budget against performance as much of the money has been wasted. The real test is going to be how much money is made available moving forward. Only then can we, really, judge how well Scott has recruited. Having said that I am not full of confidence that the money will be enough; Scott is, actually, any good at recruitment; or that Appleton can turn the players into a team that can even perform to the budget, never mind exceed it.

Not overall Director but dealing with far bigger budgets in mature, aggressive markets - As well as technical experience, Scott has his lived experience of four fairly successful clubs where he has had a tenure of c. 18 months - Therefore he's a candidate to go under the bus October 2024 if investors are unhappy at the prospect of zero promotion chances May 2025 - Whereas today the fire is in a different area. As you state, 2024 will see a budget with very little Sangaard influence. If Scott is successful at recruiting four decent players in January then our form may well return - Much of the opinions expressed depend upon people's lens as well as their own experience/ views of organisations, football and change. In football and politics a week can be a long time!

As I say I’m not saying that Scott has done anything good but we haven’t signed any players on long term contracts that, already, look like we will have to pay them off. I know that is a low bar but, to be fair, we have been beyond shit for a long time. Not shit is, actually, a step up.

I can’t see a reasonable excuse then for the state of our recruitment process when compared against the likes of Pompey and Bolton I never rated Gallen and I have my doubts about Scott…. Maybe the owners need to look seriously about a head hunting a proven recruitment expert…..

Kirk, McGrandals and Aneke, for example, contribute very little for their wages. Fraser is another one that will be earning a lot of money yet is hardly setting the division alight. Last January the signings were brought in to cover holes left from the start of the dead wood removal. None of them were much good but they did keep us up. It makes me sick writing that. Again the signings this summer have all been a bit pants but I suspect that the Sandgaard signings were using up most of the allowable budget - made harder due the number of season ticket holders that the Rock Star managed to dissuade from renewing in the three seasons that he took the club backwards.

We needed less numbers and more quality IMO, 11 midfielders was crazy😳

Pathetic, he has to go.
Everyone can see placing May on the wing has dried up his goals but Appleton continues to play him there. What has some players got to do to get a chance, Watson, T Campbell etc.

As a club we continue to lurch from one disaster to another. The mentality that runs through our club is one that accepts continued failure as being acceptable when it is anything but. The biggest issue we have right now in my view is Andy Scott and he needs to go sharpish. It is he who bought in the majority of these sub standard players, along with an inept journeyman of a manager in Appleton (who also needs to go], his poor decisions are one of the biggest reasons why this is yet another season wasted. The manner in which we are losing games and conceding such poor goals game in game out is simply unacceptable. To be half way through the season and to have won only 1 away league game and keep a measly 3 clean sheets is absolutely pathetic.

Might not be for everyone, and his connections to other clubs might be a problem for some but if he's getting twitchy and wants back in.... Gary Rowett? Not for me

He is an ex addick and even the most fervent anti Scum CAFC fan would want to see him organise our team in a way that our recent managers are incapable of. We’ve needed to be bringing in players who hate losing and demand the same form inexperienced colleagues.

This is an incredible stat, and is indicative of just what a mess the club is in.
Would anyone like to hazard a guess at how many players have made their debuts for CAFC in the first half of this season 🤔
Five ? Ten ?
Nope.
An incredible sixteen (16) players have made their debuts for CAFC between August ‘23 and Jan 24.

We have retained just five from 13 months ago plus AMB, Ness, T. Campbell and Leaburn made their mark. May and Chem Campbell are a step up but unfortunately our midfield is still poor.
