The difference between L1 and Championship financially is probably £5m. Alfie is our main catalyst for this along with Bonne. Neither should be sold for half that sum.

After Doughty performance against West Ham £5 million should be the price. The best player for us yesterday.
If he is sold for less than that we should be scrapping the academy.

Alfie should follow the example of Joe Gomez. He signed a new contract, carefully weighed up the options which inevitably came his way, (Arsenal, Dortmund, Man. City or Liverpool), then after taking good advice from the right people, chose the club which he believed was best for his career.

In an ideal world, players would sign a new deal with the club, to enable the club that gave them their chance and developed them, to receive a decent fee for them.
The new deal would probably need to contain certain conditions, re an agreed amount being offered for the player, being accepted by the club. Also various other clauses.
The problem that often seems to arise now, is that players prefer to run their contracts down, and leave as a free agent, thus securing a large signing on fee from their new club.
The power is in the hands of the players and their agents, the best interests of the club are not considered important. Managers are forced to sell players that they would like to keep, after working hard to improve them..
Players’ doing the “right thing” for their clubs’, is a rare thing unfortunately. Managers must hate the role that agents play in their every day lives now.

Joe could have left for nothing, but signing a contract and leaving not too long afterwards turned out to be better for him in the long run, and at least Roland got £3.5m to subsidise his madcap scheme.

Frankly I’m not sure any of them care if the money on offer is enough. This is, in my view, why Taylor left, why Aribo left, why Bauer left and why Alfie will leave. We, as fans, are obsessed with the ownership and all that shit, the players are obsessed with the money on offer! somewhere along the line if you’ve got any ambition you have to encourage your young talent and better players to stay at the club or you’ll just stagnate , I know what I want A rich owner has the space to ask "what will it take to get us promoted back to the Championship - who do we have and what do we need to add?" Unfortunately ESI have neither the capital nor the ambition to take us beyond the bottom six in the Championship, and certainly not the vision. Unless the takeover happens quickly then it appears Doughty will be sold to meet the wage bill for the next couple of months. That's not vision nor ambition, just living hand to mouth. Let's face it, ESI/CAFC doesn't even have the backing to hold out for a bid closer to Doughty's obvious value - same as when the club was owned by Jiminez and Cash.

Managers must hate the role that agents play in their every day lives now. In the past this ideal world worked at CAFC with the club doing two things: offering contracts at the market rate and recruiting a squad which can support and nurture talent, i.e., do more than yo-yo between the bottom six of the Championship and the top six of League 1. Right now ESI will want to cash in on any playing talent that can help meet the wage bill. They don't have the backing to offer a bigger/better contract along the basis you outline above. The best academy players (and loans) want to get to the top end of the Championship where the real money is as quickly as possible for that is where the quality (and the money) is. In short the best Charlton academy players are destined for the likes of Brentford because they are set up to develop players at that level and then ensure a life changing deal should they move on. Or Scotland because the agents spot the opportunity of reducing CAFC's development fee if a young player runs down his contract.

Bad news, Alfie has posted a picture on Instagram with the phrase "Gutted to be out for some time but I'll be back stronger and fitter"

Immediate chance for Matthews or Maddison on the right hand side then.

Step up please Marcus Maddison and Adam Matthews!
Ps we are now a very Welsh team ... I didn’t realise that Adam was an international and surprised that he didn’t appear to get a call up last season.

Typical if he misses loads of games and ends up at Celtic for next to nothing.

It’s a big blow to lose Alfie, and I wish him a speedy recovery ( seems appropriate).
LB will take it on the chin like he always does , and find a way to make it affect us as little as possible.
Fortunately, our squad depth now will give him more opportunities to find a way, but having said all of that, he is a loss because he offers us something no other player does.

Maybe with a bit of time to reflect , he may consider signing the new contract that’s sitting in front of him..📃🖌

Well, he's a write off for most the season if not all then (once we have all the inevitable delays and flare ups). Bugger.
Time to bring in that left winger we were looking at...
