PETER Varney says he accepted a role on Charlton’s plc board because he is desperate for the club to return to their former glories.
The former Addicks chief executive helped negotiate the recent £7million cash injection into the club by directors.
And Varney, who stepped down from his role at The Valley in 2008, is also tasked with trying to find fresh investment for the club, work he has been doing for several months already.
“My dad took me to my first Charlton game when I was six and my return has nothing to do with finance as some people have suggested,” said Varney, who became a non-executive director at the end of last week.
“I think I’m in a position where I can help them but the board deserve a lot of credit for putting more money into the club.
“To see what has happened in recent years is very disappointing. You sort of have to accept that with the imbalance in finance that exists in the Premier League that at some time you face the prospect of getting relegated to the Championship - but to drop two divisions is something else."

Yeah we all know the intentions are honourable.... Now pull your finger out Varney, and start sucking up to those Arab billionaires......

Varney was on the Charlton side of the fence though when whatever talks between the club and possible buyers failed to materialise recently. Im glad he's back on boar but we all knew it anyway!

I love Peter Varney. It's official. I always liked him anyway, but in the midst of one of the worst managerial disasters ever inflicted on our wonderful club, he actually managed to make me laugh - and I'll always love him for that. We'd just fired Iain Dowie (yay!) and appointed Les Reed (oops!), and Sky Sports were quick off the mark to call Simon Jordan so he could slag us off. He mumbled this weird little whinge about how he couldn't understand why we'd fired him so quickly, and what a great coach Dowie was... Which was very strange when you consider he had nothing good to say about him before that moment, AND was in the process of suing him! They interviewed Varney after our press conference, and after hearing what he had to say, asked him what he thought about the Tango's comments. He didn't look in the slightest bit bothered - in fact he didn't even skip a beat. Totally deadpan, he shrugged "Well I don't watch a lot of children's television so I couldn't comment on what Mr Jordan has to say". It was perfect. In an instant, Jordan was exposed as the pathetic cretin that he is; and Varney won my eternal respect.
