Was this who we thought we were buying in the Summer?
Whilst you'd never say no to a quality striker. I'm not sure that's our priority when we create so little. I REALLY hope it's not our priority!

Surely that means Hylton would be gone and Kanu likely loaned out?

Campbell going back, and looking at what formations might work / who we need to create more chances.

Think we need a striker as don’t think Godden is good enough I don’t think Godden or our forward players are the problem…..it’s the two quality midfielders with creativity and goals in them that we are so desperately missing and have been since the summer…. Not having any decent defensive CB cover has also been a problem

I like the lad - he reminds me a bit of Karlan Grant but in truth it presents a) as largely shopping in the same market (1 Championship start, 1 League 1 start , decent League 2 numbers) b) as offering little clarity in the final third c) a divergence from the previous recruitment discipline. I will welcome any uplift in quality or option but it doesn’t address the key shortfalls. An elite keeper, a LCB upgrade and at least one functioning creative influence in midfield. I half suspect maybe this is because of a further extended delay with Aneke, a slower recovery by Leaburn or complications with the T. Campbell injury. With the lad under contract at Ipswich until 2028 I am not sure it presents as a brave new world.

Unless and until we are targeting automatic promotion and two points per game, why worry about another keeper upgrade nor yet more centre backs? We have six and our goals conceded / expected goals against is one of the best in the League. The question is how much of that is about packing the rest of the side with defensive minded players? It's very hard to assess Godden, Leaburn etc when the attacking side of midfield isn't functioning. If one of us were to meet someone in authority at the club, then we should surely ask "what is it that they are trying to do, what changes are required, how much will it cost, and how long will it take? We will soon see how this process takes shape in the 2025 windows plus coaching, tactics and team selection in between. Next three months gonna be fascinating, and shape the club for the forseeable future.

What concerns me is there are people getting paid to sign players . At the end of the window , every single fan said we need a creative midfielder which we didn’t get, and we wonder why we can’t score goals. Every fan said we are an injury in defence away from lining up with tennai watson and Gillesphey in the team. Players that contributes to our poor season last year.
So jones moaning about injuries has no sympathy from me to be honest. He brought in all these players to make us ‘categorically better than last year’ which we are not and on top of that signed all his old mates that were good in 2018

Next three months gonna be fascinating, and shape the club for the forseeable future. What we weren’t talking promotion in July & August? Does Methven know? You will get no argument from me on the projected activity in the next 3 months but sorry this cannot be about numbers. It has to be about quality. I could argue there are 7 capable central defenders but there is but one fit left sided central defender. Gillesphey on his return from Australia has a decent L1 CV. It is however in its entirety within a back 3. In a back 4 he has failed to win crucial aerial challenges and shown inadequate organisation. It has cost points. As has no elite keeper. The Coventry own goal presents as the perfect example. On what planet is he the lead defender attacking the long throw. It is not coaching - it is grown up « in game » management. It speaks to playing formation. Does playing Gillesphey mandate a Back 3? If so it has ramifications for wing backs and a defensive holding midfielder. Small and Edwards are both more than serviceable though one (pre 2024/25) has less than 20 starts, while the other has spent his entire career in 2nd & 3rd tier Scottish football. On the other side Ramsay has only ever appeared consistently above L2 and at RWB in our shirt while Watson has only presented as a bulk standard L1 full back. Starting positively they have shown to be too easily shut down. It is also speaks to the luxury of a defensive/ holding midfielder and the Coventry conundrum. I like him. He is a technically gifted player. Defensive midfielders come in all sizes, shapes and skill sets but if you are going to play one in a 3-5-2 he is the ONE creative influence with the entire game in front of him. The wingbacks, the other central midfielders and the forwards all work from the platform he provides. There is no consistent platform. How do you stop wing backs being shut down? By creating overloads. How do you create pressure within a 4-2-2-2? By coordinating the press. No overloads, no coordinated press the front four spend their life chasing shadows. It stems from game management. For all the technical skills, the individual endeavour and team ethic it is not there. You may just as well as play 3 ubiquitous central midfielders where certainly Docherty and to a degree A.Campbell built their CVs. Does it explain the failure to sign any creative midfielders? No. I thought at one point we, just as we ultimately did with Potts & Hylton, would settle for Bishop who was at least adept at linking play but he moved onto Colchester - sadly for him only to be out injured again. If there were genuine funds to do more why are we shopping in these markets? At what point does the January transfer window ever present as a better trading market than the summer.

Totally agree with westwickhamaddick and whilst January is never a good time to be trying to sign difference-makers, if we don't go all out to improve our attacking ability in midfield, and increase the chances created then we know categorically Jones and the SMT are not remotely serious about trying to get out of this league - and need to be judged accordingly.
(Ideally, another quality defender too if we could find one, but realistically) holding onto Miles and bringing in some ability to create chances for him and Godden is all that matters.
Bottom line - letting go of Alfie and Dobson (and you can add in CBT) was about as stupid as you can get when both would have stayed had we made any effort to keep them, and the raft of new signings have all been bang average at best except for Mitchell and Edwards....Berry especially has disappointed and Godden has been ok, but am confident if he got better service, he'd get easily 15+ at least....still nowhere near what we had though, and not exactly planning for the future...
Given that the likes of Barry, Keillor-Dunne and Gregory were all viable possibilities to name a few, yet we preferred aging Luton rejects when it was obvious even to a blind man what we needed, that ultra twat Scott needs to go and soon!
It seems we have to find a way to beat Burton, Crawley and Cambridge and at the very least take points of the likes of Huddersfield, Lincoln and Mansfield, or our season will be over at Christmas...again.

If there were genuine funds to do more why are we shopping in these markets? At what point does the January transfer window ever present as a better trading market than the summer. Totally agree with all this……I think we didn’t sign the additional quality CB that was so required in the summer because Jones rates Gillesphey highly…..Didnt he say he is one of our most technically gifted…. players or did I imagine this? Gillesphey has had his adequate/good days especially when he had Jones and Mitchell beside him but playing him in a two has not worked as he can’t win those aerials duels that Jones was gobbling up pre injury…..We look fragile aerially at the back and will continue to do so until Jones returns.. The Coventry feedback from our fan base is an interesting one…..For me he is one of very limited technically gifted footballers that we possess yet he gets pelters in some quarters for not playing enough through the lines into his midfield and forward colleagues where quite often the ball bounces off shin pads and thighs straight into willing opposition midfielders possession…..hence then comes the 60 diagonal bombs from Gillesphey and Mitchell in the hope that we actually win a flick on or a second ball…… January is going to be interesting to see what Jones and Scott conjure up but we waited with bated breath in the summer for some exciting creative midfield talent to be recruited but these talented available players all went to our opposition…. so I am not holding my breath about us having a successful January window

It reminds me of the old saying, ‘The longer he is out of the side the better he gets!’ Over the years a number of our players have been labelled as indispensable once they left. Pity they weren't indispensable while they were here.

Probably worth listening to Nathan Jones’s pre Huddersfield interview. He tacitly admits it’s simply not working. However, the implication is that he believes that this can largely be addressed with the existing group of players. He puts our disappointing start down to a combination of injuries, inconsistency and a simple failure to “click”. I hope he’s right.
The problem is clear and I’m sure Jones is acutely aware that for expected goals against only Birmingham have done better than us (our XgA is just 10.77 from 14 matches) while our expected goals for is a miserable 14.31 (only five teams have been less potent).
It’s a game of very fine margins though. An improvement of just 0.5 XgF per game would put us in the top six for chance creation and given our defensive record this would likely make us a very solid top six side.
Can Jones achieve this? I’m not that optimistic, but it’s not implausible. In any event, my own conclusion is that a focus on the January window is misplaced. That’s not to say we won’t strengthen, but my take is that if Jones can’t make the necessary improvements with the existing squad then it’s game over for this season.

In my experience and opinion agents are very good trash talkers, our management apart from Nathan Jones (who does not hold the purse strings) are very good trash talkers too. It is no wonder that agents and others can sell the virtues of indifferent players to the club with their motormouths, and then our leadership sell on those indifferent players to the fans with their own motormouths. At this stage of the season, I am sorry but Dobbo leaving was rubbish, that was our fault and can’t be explained away by Rodwell’s trash talk, nor can selling Alfie May. If May had played at Exeter or Stevenage for example we would have won them both in my opinion.

Dobson wanted to leave and no one in L1 or the Championship wanted to pay what Dobson's agent wanted for him. And May wanted to leave to go back to his family. I understand that there is a concern that Charlton wouldn't give Dobson what his agent wanted but they weren't the only people doubting Dobson's agent's valuation of Dobson. Jones is proving to be a very poor coach, and has spent a lot of our budget on his old mates who are failing to deliver. He has had one successful spell as a coach and Charlton is looking like failure number 3 on the spin. I'm genuinely scunnered with Charlton. So I wouldn't put much stock in my opinion. I'm enjoying non-league much more.
