How does that work out if we have 27 players or more?.

Goalkeepers and under 21s don't count.

Goalkeepers and under 21s don't count. But we can still play them with injuries?.

Read the post on the rumouirs thread from yesterday.
Far too many people posting before reading at the moment.
Just to clarify, clubs in League One are limited to a 22-man squad, although that number does not include goalkeepers or players who were under the age of 21 at the start of the calendar year.

It depends whose 22 you are talking about. The official squad listed by shirt numbers as per the Official Site is;
1. 2. Kayne Ramsay 2. 3. Macaulay Gillesphey 3. 4. Alex Mitchell 4. 5. Lloyd Jones 5. 6. Conor Coventry 7. Tyreece Campbell 6. 8. Luke Berry 7. 9. Gassan Ahadme 8. 10. Greg Docherty 11. Miles Leaburn 9. 12. Terry Taylor 13. Kaheim Dixon 10. 16. Josh Edwards 11. 17. Tayo Edun 18. Karoy Anderson 19. Nathan Asiimwe 20. Zach Mitchell 21. Ashley Maynard-Brewer (gk) 12. 22. Chuks Aneke 13. 23. Rarmani Edmonds-Green 14. 24. Matty Godden 25. Will Mannion (gk) 26. Thierry Small 15. 27. Tennai Watson 16. 28. Allan Campbell 29. Daniel Kanu
Goalkeepers and those born post 01/01/2003 (both indented above) do not have to be registered within the 22 cap specified by the EFL for League 1 clubs
Note Scott Fraser though showing on the OS has not been given a shirt number.
In terms of Jones normal “22” outfield players working group he currently has with signing Allan Campbell 24 - 16 seniors listed plus 8 “Under 21s” - I suspect he has had license to extend to 24 given Aneke and Leaburn fitness profiles.
To move beyond that one would expect to see Loans for Asiimwe and maybe Kanu, and more permanent departures for Fraser and Taylor while of course there is no restriction in adding a further keeper to the group - assuming you can find one to fit the profile sought.
I imagine conversations are still being held - maybe things will fall our way maybe they won’t.

I'm slightly perplexed that people have only just noticed the 22 man squad rule.
This has been in place for about five years now. As I posted at the start of the close season, the only time we have EVER reached it was the last few weeks of last season when NJ added free agents Wickham and LuaLua (and we also had a shedload of overage crocked or rubbish loans).
Generally speaking, most League One clubs tend to have 19 overage outfielders. We currently have 17, which (given the expected departures of Fraser and Taylor) is unlikely to rise much, so we will likely have one of the smallest squads in the division.
I've never heard of any L1 clubs having issues with the 22 man limit. The rules are much stricter in the Championship however. There the limit is 25 including goalies and (crucially) all incoming loans, even the underage PL kiddies.
The reason Huddersfield sold us REG in January, for example, is that they wanted to strengthen for their relegation tussle and were already at their 25 man limit, so had to get rid of someone sharpish (REG was playing pretty regularly for them, so it seemed a strange transfer, but was provoked by said squad limit).
Just something to bear in mind should we somehow end up in the Championship in the coming decade. As with FFP (loss limits etc) the squad rules are much tougher there, so we should enjoy the more relaxed rules of L1 while we can!

I don't want to nit pick but I was under the impression that REG was in the match day squad a lot but didn't start that many games I just checked and he started four and came off the bench another ten times. I am becoming more aware of that as he, currently, looks like an ideal sub as he can come on and play in various places across the team. This makes him very useful (and well worth a place in our 22), all be it, maybe, not first choice in any, one, position.

That is nitpicking a bit. He'd taken part in more than half of their Championship games (14 of the 27 they'd played when we signed him) and been in the matchday squad for all of them, which I think counts as "playing pretty regularly" - note the word 'pretty'! I was just making the point that I doubt they would have sold him then (especially give his versatility, as you rightly point out) if they didn't have to, due to squad limits, in order to sign someone else they had their eye on.

Fair enough I was, mainly, using it as a way to demonstrate that he is a good squad player but due to his versality he might not start many games. I certainly wasn't looking to undermine your point and I'm sorry if it comes across like that.

I also suspect that (despite the fact he can't get into our starting eleven) Hudd would likely have him back (on their bench, like ours) in a heartbeat right about now.
