A week ago I said 8th and I stick by that, however, the lack of rumours in the key positions where we are lacking is beginning to worry me. Not panicking just yet but we are probably a couple of injuries away from slipping outside the top 10, and of course my predication of 8th is reliant on all the newbies having a good season or better than they have previously.

With this squad, no chance.

Top 6 is a pipe dream at this stage. And if we continue to half arse recruitment then we won't ever get out of this division. One or two more seasons of very wealthy clubs coming up and down and the league will be championship 2.0.

6th-10th for me at the moment. Some strong teams this year, although a few who did well last year have potentially been weakened on paper.
A few quality signings away from a very good team imo.
Would love a bit more pace in the team. Do we have a set pieces taker?

With this squad, no chance. BB says this every year mate regardless of the current recruitment…….🤣🤣🤣🤣 The squad isn’t strong enough yet, I would imagine NJ is working on loans now to strengthen things…..If we were to have just a few injuries we would have the unproven Taylor in the middle of the park with Karoy running around giving the ball away…….We would actually be weaker than last season….. The defence really concerns me, we lost a couple in the summer who NJ clearly didn’t rate but he still prioritised them over the likes of REG and Gillesphey so any injuries to Mitchell and Jones and we are right back in the smelly stuff…… Would imagine he is waiting on Championship sides bringing in their main targets before allowing fringe loan players to leave…..maybe that includes Bradley of Derby…… Also because of previous piss poor recruitment we are probably finding it challenging getting shot of the players NJ doesn’t want as part of his squad….

Good post and pretty much as I see it. Whilst our recruitment has been good we are quite a way short of where we need to be. Hope we are not waiting for Bradley as his lack of speed is frightening. Your last paragraph is very relevant. We were led to believe we had a healthy budget but, excluding sell/add ons how much have we actually spent above the money we received from May? I think the wages of the players we need to shift and can't are holding us back and unless we shift some soon then the incomings are likely to be loans or out of contact freebies.

Taking the last point first, it's beyond any reasonable challenge that this ownership and Andy Scott have been extremely effective at ensuring players depart on loan or permanently. We should expect no different in August. As for new talent, nothing has changed. Scott, Jones and the rest need to source then land two or three quality players. I'm surprised we don't yet have a decent first choice keeper, but one should arrive this window.

If Hein and Potts sign I can see us achieving top six . If we can get a goal scoring midfielder , top two wouldn’t be out of the question . Defensively looking much stronger in preseason , we’ll be a match for anybody .

Eighth would be my prediction Yep I would agree, we don’t have enough quality in depth yet, once we lose a few key players to injuries / suspensions we may struggle a bit….. I think if we had this same squad last season and Jones from the start we may well have challenged but this season league one will be a completely different ball game Our strongest First eleven will always give any team including Birmingham a good game but it’s the depth and also lack of midfield goals which will hold us back….Jones said we will be stronger than last season when the window shuts and I agree but you can say the same for a lot of other clubs in this league…..

As posted before, after ten games we'll have a good idea where we sit. But the points total required to make sixth place doesn't vary that much each season. It's normally in the range 76-78 so we need 38-39 points after 23 games when the January window opens. Here's the thing: assuming that we're in the top eight then 14 of our games are against sides that are competitive AND usually on higher budgets. That means 32 of our games are against weaker sides with budgets of £2-2.5M. We need to secure four points from those teams on a consistent basis. Nobody can say with any certainty where we'll be at the end of September, nor which rumours and opinions are matched by club player acquisitions. And it's also very hard to assess how we might cope with injuries etc. But we should also allow for the fact that every 10 games / two months allows for more coaching and the team to gel. It also allows for the five 19 year olds in the squad to learn and grow. Six months to the end of January and 20 odd appearances is a massive opportunity for those teenagers to develop. So yes, the competition at the top might be stronger, but so might we?! The question is whether we can advance at a faster pace than our rivals... and whether we can retain / attract talent in future windows.

SR, I don't have an issue with your 'Let's see where we are after/by' statements but you do, somewhat, take the fun out of the 'Let's guess how we will do' threads when you insist that we wait until we know, for sure. It's, a little, like forbidding children from getting excited on Christmas Eve as in 24 hours they'll know, exactly, what Santa has brought.

It's, a little, like forbidding children from getting excited on Christmas Eve as in 24 hours they'll know, exactly, what Santa has brought. As we fast approach our opening fixture, let's see how we FEEL when we see the teamsheets and listen to expert analysis, be that Sky or Charlton TV... Let's see how each half goes, bearing in mind changes, developments and that the bookies make this a perfect match. Then embrace the highs and lows of the game... ideally celebrating that we are back as genuine top six contenders. Obviously it will take more than 95 minutes to get a real sense. But I genuinely see this as our best chance for six years to break back into the top six. So yes, I'm exited but... hard to commit when we've seen one decent friendly, and it's essentially a new side, built since early January plus some very decent Academy prospects. In other words, we get to open some of the presents at 7:20 pm on Saturday! And again after each game 😀

I think we are as well prepared as we’ve been since 2020 and maybe even better than we were that year.
