www.charltonafc.com/Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce the signing of experienced midfielder Luke Berry, who will join the club following the expiration of his contract at Luton Town. The 31-year-old has been promoted from all three EFL divisions and recently added his name to a very short list of players who have scored in each of England’s top-five leagues after netting twice in 17 Premier League appearances for Luton last season. Berry has put pen to paper on a two-year contract, with a club option of an additional year, reuniting with Nathan Jones and becoming the Addicks’ second summer signing following the arrival of Will Mannion.

What a shock! 😂
I probably owe some people some apologies as I was quite cynical about this signing suggesting that it might have been PR to sell tickets.
I apologise to whom ever my comments might have been critical of.

Excellent start to our recruitment this summer Think Will Mannion might feel a tad slighted by that comment.

Excellent start to our recruitment this summer Agreed. Quite excited when I first heard this rumour and glad we got it done (a week or so ago!). Very promising start and a bit of an eye-opener for others I think. Hope many League transfer this season are going to be player who played and scored in the prem last year? I like the fact he's come here for a project like NJ.

Could he be our new captain after Dobson’s departure?

Could he be our new captain after Dobson’s departure? I also thought this, given Nathan's description of the player I felt like he was being teed up. May not be the worst choice in the world given he's been there, done that and still a highly capable midfielder.

Could he be our new captain after Dobson’s departure? If we sign Sonny Bradley (who we're reportedly chasing) I suspect he might be the captain as he had that role in NJ's last season at Luton.

32 (virtually) year old midfielder. Are people correct to be excited?

32 (virtually) year old midfielder. Are people correct to be excited? Just had a season in the Premier League, 3 promotions in 7 seasons. Proven goal scorer from Midfield. Has the experience to drive this new team forward and will be someone for the younger players to look up to. I'm excited.

People go on about age of players but Berry near 32. Some players are brought in to develop to make a profit on and some are brought in to hit the ground running. Any player, in this day and age, that can't play until he is, at least, 34 has not being trying to look after himself properly. When they come in on a free there is no pressure to sell them on when they can no longer cut it we just release them. I would argue that players are at their peak in their early 30s these days - assuming they, genuinely, want to keep playing, and look after their bodies, properly.

Ryan Giggs 40, Paul Scholes 38 - albeit different class of players but kept in shape and looked after themselves. Don't see the problem In Berry being 32 coming in on a free

That's true and if Luke has been brought in to secure the short term goal of promotion to the Championship, then it will be a very good deal for the club. Longer term, should promotion have been achieved, that will require a young Championship quality player to fill the boots, something that I would argue, the club would've needed to do with Dobson anyway.

Indeed and Berry has played in a team that has been promoted to the Premier League. I suspect that next season he’d be able to hold his own in the Championship.

Luton supporter I come in peace!
You've got a fantastic player in Luke Berry. Why? Because he gives a toss, gives his all. He'll drive your team on, never give up and is a brilliant club man.
Personally, I wish we still had him. Quality player with a first-class attitude.
Shame your manager is a stinking little weasel who'll sell you out in less than a heartbeat! Left us mid-season, wooed by the bright lights of Stoke. Then we were stupid enough to give him another chance, and he did it again! Mid-season! I said that he would, and was proven right. The weasel!
Had it been at the end of the season you'd say "good luck mate".
But that's not the sort of person he is. Hope some form of loyalty dawns upon him at The Valley.
Anyway, good luck.

There is no loyalty to managers from club owners. It works both ways.

Nathan Jones has failed in the EPL. Twice! It's unlikely that he'll be made a third offer. His route back to the top is perfectly aligned with that of CAFC. On top of recruiting Berry and Small, we probably need another five more quality players. Less if May stays, Leaburn returns as we hope AND the team slots together at the first attempt. That's roughly one a week until the start of August. And once those players arrive, we'll all see whether we're a top six contender again. That we have a manager capable of building a promotion winning side is no bad thing. I might be wrong but his best route back to the Championship is with us.
