Our academy is still good. Our Under 18s won the League again. When you think what our Academy spends in relation to the bigger Academies, it bears no relation. I agree we haven't produced aKonsa or a Gomez for a while but Steve Avory and his staff are still doing a great job. Both Mbick and Casey scored 42 goals this Season.

I have heard we are releasing 75 per cent of our under 21s. Both goalkeepers are being released. I'm not sure that this is such a big surprise. I remember seeing Arsene Wenger interviewed where he kind of let it slip that most of the players in their (Arsenal's) Academy weren't going to make it but were kept around as those, that were good enough, needed team mates to play with, to develop. If we bring through, on average, two players each season, and they all stay with us for an average of four years then there would be something like eight academy players in our squad, on average. If we have fifteen players in each age group (born in a twelve month period) then if two make it then almost 87% would be let go. I suspect that the 75% number would include those that are given a contract but that don't, really, make it - i.e. play a few Pizza Cup games and have a few cameos from the bench before being released. At the moment we have: Maynard-Brewer Lucas Ness Zach Mitchell Richard Chin * Nathan Asiimwe Aaron Henry Tyreece Campbell Karoy Anderson Miles Leaburn Daniel Kanu That is ten but Chin has been released (I think) but only Leaburn, at this stage, looks like he will play for a top Premier League Club. Some of the other, younger, players could still make it but there is less expectation, in my view. Having said that we are one of many clubs looking for talented players so it is unlikely that we will unearth many that will play for Champion League clubs, like Gomez and Konsa (probably) are going to. Any player that plays for the club is saving us a transfer fee, and probably going to earn less wages - certainly at the early stages of their career. Also, any player that is not good enough to play for us, but can be sold, is worth having. I recognise that is less likely when we are in League One. So, in my view, the main purpose of the academy is not to sell players for big transfer fees (although this always a bonus when it happens) bit it is to save money on expensive journeymen footballers with greedy agents.

Yeah but is the league that they are in any good ? Seems to be one of the lowest level leagues that we seem to be competing in. It would be different if our youth were spanking Liverpool and even Palace 😕

This 100 per cent. So many u21s are going because the U18s are very good.

Although it goes on category 1 and 2 youth ratings. I don't think you can be promoted or relegated between the two divisions from finishing position.

We also play against 13 Championship sides. We don’t play against the Man City’s Liverpools etc But 16 teams play in a division above and we finished top of the table. By any yardstick that is good going. We should be proud of our Academy.

The guage for me of where our academy is at is Kanu. He played regular football last season despite being nowhere good enough for L1 football.
I accept that he was only called upon because of Leaburn's injury and Aneke's lack of fitness but the lad is not good enough.
I wouldn't say we have one player in the academy who is ready for L1 football. Campbell is another one not good enough. Anderson has something about him but needs to score more goals. Mbick and Casey might get a game in teh National League on-loan but like I said we don't have one player that can emulate the likes of what Parker and Shelvey did at the same age and that's to name just two.

Kanu came back from Southend a better player. I keep seeing this said. He was here for 6~ games? Scored 4 goals (all in one game ofc). If he did improve there it was minimal imo. He was recalled more due to our injury issues than suddenly becoming good enough for us. I think he did quite well for us but agree with Reams that I don't believe he's quite ready. I'm hoping he really kicks on over the summer. Builds up his strength more and hopefully this season will give him more confidence / composure on the ball. He needs game time. Will he get that if he's 4th/5th choice with us? I'd prefer to loan him out. At least until January to somewhere he can play week in week out. I don't think the league matters to much. I.e. National League would be fine. It just has to be regular games and mens football.

I definitely don’t want to knock any our kids but I have to agree with both Aaronaldo and Reams in saying Kanu is not ready/ good enough to be playing regularly in our side……I also agree strongly that he needs to build up his strength as watching him getting bullied physically by those Wycombe centre backs in the last game really brought it home how unready he was for this level of football

Kanu is still learning his trade. He still did ok when called upon. Agreed Dick he did ok but he was thrown in due to our lack of striking resources rather than because of his current ability level ……..but I still think he needs a full season on loan in league two to continue the learning trend and to bulk up….I just don’t see him ready for league one level yet…but that’s not to say he won’t be in the future as he deffo has an eye for a goal….
