theanalyst.com/eu/2024/03/substitutes-breaking-records-english-football-league/In England’s top four tiers, 642 goals have been scored by subs in league action this season – that’s already a record. - Ipswich, Southampton & Derby lead the way for sub goals.
- Shrewsbury the only side yet to see a substitute score.
We are doing quite well from our subs this season to be fair. The added time at the end of games has got to be playing a part in this jump in the record. Interesting though. Can't believe the Shrewsbury stat. Although to be fair, they have only scored 29 in total for the whole season. At one point (January time I think) they were quite far above us in the table and Alfie had scored more than their entire team! It's amazing that they are on over 40 points and not stuck in the relegation zone.

Thanks for sharing this aaronaldo It’s interesting. I’ve got this site bookmarked, but I don’t check regularly for updates and/or new articles. I’ve just now seen that there’s another and very similar article on the use of substitutes in the Premier League. What’s interesting about stuff like this is that it can tell us (and/or can confirm) when the game is changing infront of our eyes. In this case, the increased number of subs, both available on the bench and which can be fielded, is clearly leading to important shifts in tactics and then also to outcomes. It’s very hard to generalise, especially given that exceptional players will always be exceptions to any rules but, for example, asking strikers to press very aggressively with a view to changing them on 60-70 minutes seems to becoming increasingly common. It’s not surprising then that subs are scoring more goals, but this trend also has important implications for squad shape. All other things being equal clubs need more strikers than might have sufficed previously etc.

Here's another article on the use of substitutes. There are major differences around the use of subs between Premier League managers. It will be interesting to see how this develops. As I noted above, it might mean, for example, that we need to recruit more strikers than we've needed in previous seasons.
