I hope he improves with age but from the games I see him play I didn't see enough quality.

I hope he improves with age but from the games I see him play I didn't see enough quality. I thought he looked really promising when he got in the team. I'd mark him in the "has something extra about him" category. In his first game...albeit against non-league oppo, he was bursting into midfield with such ease and balance. Reminded me very much of Krystian Bielek. No matter what league we are in next season, I'd expect him to be back at Charlton and a regular in the matchday squad.

Slightly specious comments from their manager re having five other loanees as even in a recent game where not all five were available Zach didn't made the squad. He was last season's EFL League One Apprentice Of The Year don't forget, so obviously has promise. I suspect he'll be at best a bench warmer rather than a starter for us next season (if we don't send him out on loan again).

I thought that was Deji Elerewe?

I thought that was Deji Elerewe? Elerewe won L1 Apprentice Of The Year the season before (2021-2). Mitchell won it for 2022-3. The fact that young Charlton centre halves won overall best apprentice in the division for two years in a row just makes the shitness of our defence this season even more baffling!

I'd say it actually doesn't bode well for the quality of the other L1 academies if Elerewe and Mitchell were regarded as the best two U18 players for the whole division over the past two years - the kids other clubs have must have be even worse! FWIW our other EFL Apprentice Of The Year award winners were Ademola Lookman (Championship, 2015-6) and Jordan Cousins (L1, 2011-2). The fact we've won that award for the division we were in four times in the past 12 seasons does indicate how strong our academy is for the level we've fallen to, but I'm not sure what the exact positives or negatives to take from that are!

As posted before, it's not altogether clear that the issue of our conceding goals lies solely with the central defenders. One can also look to midfield, full backs, and the keeper plus the coaching. How have we transformed from a mid-table defence for the last couple of seasons into a bottom six defence? And what's the route back? It's easy to focus on catastrophic errors by individuals, but it's the overall decline that has brought us here. Let's see how Jones and the coaching staff address this plus note that we have recruited quite a few last month. March will tell us if we are improving towards where we need to be.
