With all the talk of a target man type striker and the pros and cons, I’ve got a genuine question. Did people actually rate Carl Leaburn? I was only young at the time but to me he was a bit of joke figure or was I well off?

There we go again, confusing a target man with a striker. The clue is in the job title. Ask his strike partners how many goals they would have scored without him.

Very underrated - his co-strikers benefited from playing alongside…….went on to Wimbledon I believe, they knew a big physical asset when they saw one

In my opinion, in his early Charlton days he was a bit of a joke figure but as he aged he became an essential part of the team. During the Curbs, (and Gritt) days he became a cult hero, and in my eyes is now a Charlton legend.
He could hold the ball up better than anyone, great in the air, fed the team around him, just his shooting was poor.
Will always remember his goal at Old Trafford in the 94 FA Cup quarter final, shame it was only a consolation!.

I just remember the ball bouncing off his shins and knees. Also used to baffle me how he could barely raise a shot off the floor and was so painfully slow!

Carl Leaburn as a youngster was a very promising player, but we didn't learn then and we haven't since. When he was a teenager he was thrust into the team before he was ready, ( then like now we had a striker, target man problem ) he was over played and it affected his development, something we are in danger of repeating at the moment if we don't make the signings we need.

Listen to all the old pro's that played with him, they absolutely loved him, why? because he done all the dirty/donkey work that enabled the team to prosper including the solid defensive work. He was a managers dream, a bit like Gritt and Brownie, he done all the right things and worked his bloody socks off! My dad would argue with everyone for him! This is why we shouldn't get bogged down with stats, in particular goal ratios etc when looking at a new striker.

In truth, he was a bloody awful player That said, I’m sure I saw him score a hat trick, including a bicycle kick, at Blackburn away.

Mendonca once said he was the best striker he played with at Charlton.

I can only assume from your screen name that you would not have been old enough to understand the game let alone spout an opinion on a man that probably played more games for Charlton than you have seen quote author=" Tom1982" source="/post/480817/thread" timestamp="1705608282"]I just remember the ball bouncing off his shins and knees. Great player's player. Ask Mendonca, Paul Williams, David Whyte (RIP). They all had good goal returns playing beside him. That 97/98 while only brief before he went Wimbledon him and Mendonca were a great partnership leading to Charlton rolling over some very good teams at the Valley. You look at the wobble that promotion season once he left to understand the importance to the team.

But since we’re using that kind of inflammatory rhetoric, I KNOW he was pony, just trying to work out why other don’t 👍🏻

He wasn't pony mate, not at all.
He was a big and strong, could hold the ball up and feed fellow strikers, quite often on a plate. He was also good in the air.
He was never a natural goalscorer but he made a lot of goals/chances for others.
He also scared opposition defenders and that created space.
We used to joke about him but that's just what we as Charlton fans do!

I believe rose tinted glasses are being worn here. IMO from that era he’s one of the last of the team players you’d mention as one of the better ones.
That said, seems a good chap, his wife’s great so defo part of the fabric that makes Charlton great
