Blimey. That's a shock. Wonderful player. So elegant. Started out in central midfield, but most impressive at sweeper where he was probably the first world class footballing centre back. Stand out player in the '66, '70 and '74 World Cups and at the '72 and '76 European Championships. Made the game look so easy.
RIP.

And just after Sir Bobby as well. Two wonderful players who graced the game.

Just read that J.P.R. Williams has also died today. He was only 74. Somehow seemed appropriate to add it to this thread. J.P.R. really was from another age. In addition to being a world class rugby union player and as hard as nails, he was an orthopaedic surgeon. He was also a very good tennis player, beating David Lloyd (John’s brother) to win the British Junior Tennis title, and played for several cricket teams, including the Lord’s Taverners. I also read somewhere that post his rugby career he took up squash and became Welsh champion though I can’t validate that.
Some people are just so out of the ordinary it’s not funny. What a man. RIP.
