Since we're in the transfer window I wondered how close to the squad limit we were at.
For them that don't know, in League One you are allowed a maximum of 22 overage (born before 1st Jan 2002) outfield players. These need to be registered on your squad list during the transfer window and you can't go beyond the limit. It's not just a risk of fines/point deductions like SCMP, you literally can't field players not on the list, the ref shouldn't even let you try.
I know we've come within one or two of the limit in past seasons. Since even long term injured players are on the squad list (unlike American sports where you can move them to an injured list to free up space on the active roster) I was wondering how close we were to it right now.
We only have TWELVE overage outfield players! We can happily sign another TEN if we want (obviously there's SCMP rules to factor in, I'm just talking about squad size here).
That is astonishing tbh. Going on for 60% of our current first team squad are U21s and goalies.
I was thinking that signing youngsters like Fiorini might be necessary (we've sent back one overage and one underage loanee and brought in the same) but it totally isn't.
We really do need to be bringing in a whole bunch of players in their mid to late twenties during January. What we have now is closer to a development squad than first team in terms of experience - and that's before you factor in that SIX of our twelve overage outfielders (ie half of them!) are currently injured.
I knew we had a young squad but hadn't realised exactly how young - jeebers!

I went to the link but they wanted to invade my privacy without a choice so clicked away. Someone should explain GDPR to that site.

Yes but see it as a positive. It means we have an advantage over other clubs chasing players for our team as not all our rivals will have space in their squad for such signings.
We just need to ensure we are bringing in the right players otherwise they occupy a spot we can't free up for someone better. And some of the work has been shifting such players.

They might drink at the fountain but every owner and shareholder since we were relegated from the Premier League back in 2007 has taken a significant haircut upon exit. The exception would be ESI who put nothing in.

These talented young prospects should be nurtured and introduced gradually, learning the art (and dark arts!) of football as they go, not thrown in at the deep end. It does give us room to add to our squad, which we so obviously need to do but SCMP rules could limit our ability to do so. This window and the summer window are vital to the future of CAFC.

The SMT sit around the table making decisions that are mindboggling , 433 comes to mind , underperforming, unaccountable and overpaid
