Over the last few games where I’ve been watching Charlton I have felt nothing but feeling completely disillusioned. Not even angry or frustrated anymore.
The football at Charlton has been the worst since I started watching them since the early 90’s. The Port Vale game today, Burton and Cambridge at home recently was as boring as anything. Dreadful football. I didn’t go to the Oxford game at home because I couldn’t bare sitting in freezing cold with a hangover watching poor standard football.
I keep on hearing other fans feeling the same way and some even considering not renewing their season ticket next season. Such a shame to see a club like this but when we’ve had owners shit on us over the years who can blame them. I’m only going because of social reasons but if all of my friends stop I probably wouldn’t go anymore.
This January window has got to be the most important window over the last windows. The standard and management has to improve massively to win the fans back over.

17 seasons of almost uninterrupted failure, other than two seasons of brief success under Powell (2011) & Bowyer (2019).
It all began with an act of supreme arrogance by Richard Murray, who decided to spite Simon Jordan by appointing Iain Dowie as our manager.

Feel the same, everything about the club has been a total mess for such a long time. It’s got to the point where any player could leave and most probably wouldn’t give a shit because I don’t think many fans identify with the team or indeed the club these days. Such a sorry state of affairs for our once proud club.

Disillusioned, yes. But I won’t ever stop supporting!
I still get very emotional (as today’s posts show!). We’re not in a good place but I’m still hopeful of a turnaround!

Thing is we’ve all been desperately hoping and waiting for a turnaround for the past 15 years or so. How many more decades is it going to take because we are steadily becoming worse and lower down the pyramid in the process.

In the bad days when we left the valley we still had the best part of eleven players giving their heart and soul for the club. Not forgetting the management teams who were responsible for getting the very best out of a bunch of journey men, to perform above their stature and the fans who got behind them to drive them on to greater things. I still live in hope.

DFT, completely off track, after all this time I've just realised the Dylan lyrics in your profile. Marvellous! Back on track, I live overseas and there was a time I'd always try to be in front of the live commentary. Now I just wonder what I can do instead. Sad state of affairs.

I still live in hope. You're right, it's the hope that keeps you going. Back in the 70's I used to do a 150 mile round trip every home game to watch a poor team play in a broken down stadium. Spent most of the games with the other fans moaning at all and sundry. After yet another defeat there was always a collective "that's it, never again", but we were always all there for the next game, cheering and moaning.

Even if we are disillusioned, at least it has brought us all here on this forum. If we were in a place when we couldn't even be arsed to discuss Charlton then that's the end.

We will have our time again no doubt other teams were more in the abyss than we are but I thought after all the bad owners SE7 were different they may yet be but I’m not convinced.

It's hard to muster up any passion towards the club when you don't see any from the owners, players, or large percentage of the fanbase.

Such a sorry state of affairs for our once proud club. I assume you weren't around in the Gliksten years then. I was around but football was very different then. We didn't have the money, we didn't have the wall to wall TV coverage but we always had hope and dreams, after all we were still seen by many as a 'sleeping giant'! I remember 1968/69 when we should have got promoted to the top flight but finished third behind Derby and Crystal P when only 2 teams were promoted, lost twice to The Scum and drew too many games, missed out and the decline started with us getting relegated 2 years later. If we had have gone up in 1969 I'm convinced we would have gone on to be a major player in English football. Charlton were, still are (potentially) the biggest club in South London and the area was crying out for a top flight club, the crowds would have flocked back to The Valley. After the relegation in 1972 we were very much an up and down club and crowds were low but always came back for attractive or important games. We never spent long in the third tier, not like now where we have spent 10 out of the last 12 years there (I think those figures are right, I am happy to be corrected). The doom and gloom is set hard now with even the most optimistic fans I know feeling down. In my opinion today is a lot worse than the Gliksten era, the mess of having bad ownership, the mistake of hounding Duchatelet out of the club (yes, with hindsight I think it was a mistake) and not owning our own stadium and training ground make the current era the worst in the clubs history.

What I feel has already been said above. However, even though I don't go to many games I continue to have a season ticket and will probably renew next season as it is my way of supporting the club which I will always do.

I feel it’s a combination and final build up of poor owners broken promises and shit football to watch over many years. maybe one good game in 10 can keep a few interested just wish for once we could get proper billionaire owners and spend proper money not worrying about what is small change to them. To put into perspective, how much £1 billion is if you saved 1 million every year since the Battle of Hastings 1066, you still wouldn’t be a billionaire. I live 10 minutes from the ground and couldn’t be arsed to go to the last game I never thought I would say that or do that, obviously the live streams are not helping.

Still holding onto the hope that on paper we’ve got professionals in key positions now. Andy Scott has not got off to a great start but he’s highly regarded in the game….. he can’t be this bad can he??? Appleton ain’t a bit of me at all so hopefully he gets jogged on soon and I’m sure the results start to come.
