It’s quite interesting that whenever we play away from home the oppo supporters seem to rate us as the best or 2nd best side that has come to play them…..( well apart from Gillingham fans 😁) and yet we are 10th in the league…. Suggests we are not a million miles away and maybe a couple of excellent transfer windows from being a very decent side

Doesn't sound like they'll be spending anything in January 😃

We have turned our away form around , and could have taken 9 points from the last 3 league games. I think where we fall down mainly is the lack of threat from the bench , but hopefully this will be addressed in January.

It's good to read honest comments from opposing fans.

Interesting that their fans are saying they need a dominant central defender in the January window. Where have I heard that this season? Just goes to show how difficult it's going to be in the upcoming window for us. Barnsley will have the advantage of being in contention and therefore, probably a more attractive proposition for any suitable players available.

A lot saying we didn’t create any real chances with all our good play. Thats pretty much our season right there.
You just have to look at the stats for xG and Clear cut chances that we create. We’re near the bottom of the league for clear cut chances. We lack quality in the final balls and attacking play despite having May scoring so many.

Our xG in the first half of recent games has been pretty poor. Overall we're in the top six for goals and shots from open play as opposed to 9th for xG for. theanalyst.com/2023/08/league-one-stats-2023-24-opta/As for set plays, we're in the bottom four for xG for and against - massive room for improvement. Somewhat baffling that L.Watson doesn't get a shout as his corners are perhaps the best we've seen all season. Ideally we'll see things shape up in the second half of the season.

I think that’s right aaronaldo As we’ve discussed many times, football data needs to be interpreted with care. Even if there is a clear relationship between an item of data (Xg, for example) and an outcome (goals), that relationship is likely to be very noisy (Xg is only an estimate of the likelihood of goal when a shot is taken) while sometimes a supposed relationship doesn’t always apply (dominating possession doesn’t necessarily translate into better results). Nevertheless, match data can be interesting and insightful and the Opta data for yesterday is a good example. We had 58% possession and 480 passes to Barnsley’s 42% and 351 respectively. Our passing accuracy was 77% (to Barnsley’s 74%), while we had 178 passes in the opposition’s half (to Barnsley’s 129) and 32 touches in the opposition’s box (to Barnsley’s 20). On the basis of this data, we appear to have dominated the game and may well have appeared to be a good side. It’s perhaps not surprising that this is exactly the conclusion Barnsley’s fans came to. However, as you’ve pointed out aaronaldo , this apparent dominance did not translate into the creation of many clear cut chances. Our Xg was 0.95 with an Xg on target of just 0.23 from three shots on target. Once again, we created almost nothing from set plays (Xg 0.03). Even this might flatter us a little. Corey Blackett Taylor did very well to capitalise on a defensive error and worked an excellent opening which must have had a high Xg in its own right (Taylor’s Xg for the match was 0.4). Barnsley’s Xg was only 1.21 so we did relatively well defensively, turning on its head the typical characterisation of this side that it can score goals but can’t defend. I wasn’t able to watch the game yesterday, but while the point won may have been very much deserved, the data suggests we may have flattered to deceive in terms of our overall performance. It seems to me that Appleton’s challenge is to improve our ability to create chances. In part that’s about the balance of the front three, but perhaps more importantly it’s about a lack of creativity in and from central midfield.
