Interesting read from a good guy.
A couple of things stand out -
1. The state of the pitch at the Valley, with the top being ripped off when the covers came off. Might help explain our chronic injury problems.
2. Scott Fraser “the best No.10 in the division” - no. Although definitely the best paid, and most inconsistent.
3. The new owners don’t want to go down the experienced player route, but want to do things running a younger squad. Not sure that bodes well for Appleton in January, he is now experiencing the exact same issues as his four most recent predecessors.

Very good read, I felt he was treated harshly by us.
I'm not saying he got everything right, but no worse than any other manager we've had in recent times.
I would have give him 2 years at least.

This is the quote you are referring to I think, “When the new owners came in, we were working under a two-year remit to get out of League One – ideally in the first year – and playing younger players developed from within a great academy. The owners didn’t want to go up and then come down with an experienced team.” We could have an interesting discussion about what that actually means. My interpretation of that last sentence is that SE7 don’t want to sign a bunch of experienced players, on long contracts, win promotion and then come straight back down again because we’re stuck with (relatively expensive) players who aren’t good enough for the Championship. Players like Scott Fraser, for example.

Fraser is a top player, our best but just isn't suited to the way we play. In a compact midfield or one that is higher up the field he thrives with his clever one or two touch intricate passing. Strikers who come deep looking for the ball and then holding it up bringing him into it inside the penalty box are also what he does best. We are not playing to his strengths. We are too deep. Dobson goes looking for the ball deep in our own half then plays long balls up field or out wide....why? All that does is allow opponents to outnumber us in their half. We make the pitch far too big, players are miles apart. Fraser needs his mates around him, he needs options to pass and go in small pockets of space in and around the box. That's how you turn defenders. May needs to do more of that too. He and Fraser are our biggest weapons but both are not being utilised properly.

By the way I have told you all many times on here that the owners want to go down the youngster route. My response to it has caused a word or two to be exchanged between myself and those in charge. You need experience, much more than we have. That showed on Saturday from the 85th minute onwards. Youngsters are fine if their names are Parker, Doughty, Konsa, Shelvey, Konchesky, but are current crop are nowhere near the quality of old. Good players maybe against their own age groups in the u21's but at league 2 level they are out of their depth and embarrassingly so.

Not sure Gerrard would be someone I’d be wanting to learn from in management. Especially not in that league. But money talks I guess

Not sure Gerrard would be someone I’d be wanting to learn from in management. Especially not in that league. But money talks I guess It’s, probably, a lot of money and if he stays there for two years it’ll be tax free. However, as he has been out of work for nearly six months he has, pretty much, got to take whatever he is offered. I hadn’t heard of him when he arrived and wasn’t, really, all that impressed with him, even though he came across as a really decent guy. I wish him well but I don’t see him managing a club bigger than us again so this might be a chance for him to earn enough to retire on.

Reinforces what a genuinely nice bloke Dean is - hope he does well in his latest job.
And let’s hope young Alfie turns up safe and well 🤞
