Charlton Athletic are delighted to confirm the appointment of Dr Will Abbott as Director of Performance Services.
Abbott will take up the role after completing his notice period as Performance Manager at Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion, a club he has been at for more than a decade.
In the role, Abbott will oversee the performance services provision across the club, which includes the medical, nutrition, sports science and psychology departments, ensuring players across all the teams are in peak physical condition and the methodology is aligned and integrated across the football club.
Technical Director Andy Scott said: “We interviewed a number of really talented candidates and Will was the standout.
“I think everyone looks at Brighton with admiration and envy and we believe the experiences Will has had over the last decade, as well as his undoubted knowledge, will help us set the high standards in the performance departments which improve the whole club.
“I’d like to thank Paul Barber and David Weir at Brighton & Hove Albion for their co-operation and professionalism.”
Abbott began his professional career working in Southampton’s Strength and Conditioning team in 2010 before joining Brighton in 2012, working his way up to the position of Performance Manager in January 2022.
Abbott completed his PhD at the University of Brighton after graduating from the University of Portsmouth with a Master’s degree in Sports Performance. He is currently continuing his education at Manchester Metropolitan University with a Masters in Sport Directorship.

Sounds a positive appointment, hopefully we will start to see the benefits of this soon! Now let's see how this plays out - good appointment, man with knowledge and experience from an established Prem club VS The owners are skint and will only employ yes men, "why did he want to leave Premiership Brighton for a L1 club run by someone with pink trousers"

I won’t hold my breath 😁

Recruiting a top professional! Surprising they got him to come here, but very welcome indeed. Hopefully this is another sign that high standards of performance are embedded throughout all aspects of the club.

Hope he took notes today or maybe he thought sod that and gone back to Brighton. PLENTY to address, our mental resolve seems to be seriously lacking and has been for some time.
