it is a shame really. I do believe in him there is a good player who has the potential. Saying that he had a terrible start with us both on and off the pitch which he has never really recovered from. I think moving on with a new team and back up north closer to his family is the best for him and the team. Let him go for free and save some money on his wages.

It'll be good for him and for the club if he moves on in January.
He has no future at Charlton but he might have elsewhere, probably dropping down a division.

No bad blood, but he's had enough cracks of the whip now. Shame as a player's in there, but if he wants up North and the fee we get can get is reinvested then so be it.

We've been trying to offload him on a free transfer for over a year now and nobody's interested. There will be no fee. On the contrary WE will have to pay HIM a fee (pay off some of his contract) to move him on. He's on 7.5k a week here and unlikely to get more than 2k-ish elsewhere so we're the ones who will be paying a fee (not receiving one) if he moves in January.

Perhaps wishful thinking on my part as he's still got a chunk of contract left. I wasn't sure if we just wanted rid ASAP,or looking for a deal that would suit all parties ideally.

Personally I'd hope that Appleton can sit down with him and have a chat - it's not in Kirk's nterests to be frozen out for another year, despite being paid. Surely as a professional footballer it would be better to move back up north with his family, and get back on the pitch. and for us we need to free some wages to get better players in. I guess it's all down to Kirk and his agent trying to get some sort of pay off to tear up his contract.

With the new rules that are being forced onto the EFL, in exchange for more money from the a Premier League, players like Kirk are never going to earn as much as they have now. He will, probably, earn more in the next eighteen months (from us) than he will earn in the rest of his career. He would be mad to agree to walk away from, what could be, £250k after tax. Especially when you consider that his attitude to work makes it look unlikely that he will have much of a career after he stops playing football. Basically he’s buggered, and he’s stuck with us just as much as we’re stuck with him.

What I would add is that his focus and effort may well change late 2024 as the contract winds down and he realises he's playing for his next contract elsewhere. Seen this with several players over the years and perhaps his appetite for a move in January 2025 might be high if some club or other is offering a deal.

My main criticism of Kirk is that he bottles every tackle and goes to great lengths to avoid any challenge. He also slows every move down and so often gives away possession.
