After ~ 1/4th of the season the league position is getting closer to reflect the actually strength of all the teams. So I took a closer look at the games played and those ahead relative to the current positions, until january 1st.
notes:
Some random observations.
My take on it: 2 disappointing losses at home vs Bristol Rovers and Port Vale, losing in the final minutes while also hitting the post 1 minute before; while having key players injured. Apart from that CAFC Charlton has more or less done what can be expected in terms of results for a club with the ambition of a top 6 finish.
notes:
- I deliberately use #position references rather than club names just to avoid bias.
- This is far from anything scientific, just a humble attempt to get a bit more insight in the table.
Some random observations.
- Lost 2 vs #2 and #5. Nothing out of the ordinary.
- Lost 2 vs #14 and #17. That hurts.
- 1 win and 2 draws against the teams right in front of us (#6, #8, #7). Nothing out of the ordinary.
- #1 and #2 win their games (what a surprise).
- #3 to #5 are consistent with 10/15, 10/15 and 9/15.
- Teams #6 to #8 are on a poor to mediocre run (3/15, 8/15, 7/15)
- Team #9 has played 2 games more than CAFC but got 13/15 out of their last 5 games.
- While looking at the table, you see more red than green for the teams ranked below Charlton.
- One could make the argument that current league positions are generally speaking a somewhat fair representation of the actual strength for most of the teams.
- Next 2 games are against #12 and #4.
- However out of the following 6 games we play 5 out of 6 against the bottom tier clubs, with the other game being against #1. A massive opportunity to climb the table.
- The calendar is definitely favoring Charlton as we never have a cluster of games against the top teams. There are always 1 or 2 games to recover from a potential loss vs what should be easier opponents on paper.
