Only Sir Geoff Hurst left from the heroes of ‘66.
Very sad news for those of us old enough to have seen Bobby play, but aged 86 he’s had a good innings. Nonetheless, the world of football has lost a true legend.

Taken the edge off today, one of the very best as a footballer and a person. Thanks Bobby, RIP, we won't see your like again.

my idol then and such an honourable man of course I my name was bobby and i supported Charlton I was10 or 11 in those days there were no floodlights Charlton were in the old first division in 1957/58 season the match was mid week at 3pm .I was desperate to see The Busby babes play the reds so after discussing with my mum she agreed to write school to see if i could be excused so I could go to the match my idol was Bobby Charlton a young 17 year old in those days. All i got was to be called out in an assembly in the cold play ground and get 5 of the best on my hands. ManU thumped us 5-1 and our bobby scored a couple . Nowdays i would do anything to have that day again even if we lost. That season we lost our first division status so I never dot to see my idol live. What a fabulous footballer and individual RIP your always be remembered you were the best

Watched the BBC tribute programme... knew all about '58 and '68 but so much else revealed about the man.
Fantastic ambassador for Man Utd and the game.
RIP

Wonderful player. From another era and another world.
The bad news is that I’m old enough to have seen him play live. The good news is I saw him play live a number of times. I wasn’t very old though (!) and probably didn’t appreciate him as much then as I might now. As a result, my impressions of him as a player have probably been mainly been formed by watching YouTube videos of him.
Two things stand out for me. First, despite not being known as a speed merchant and playing most of his matches on cabbage patches, he seemed to simply glide across the surface and rarely seemed troubled by the brutal carnage around him.
Second, and most remarkably of all, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more naturally two-footed player. An ability to take corners with either foot simply isn’t normal. The game has seen some true greats, Di Stefano, Pele, Cruyff, Maradona, Messi and others, but they have all been very clearly left or right footed. Not Bobby Charlton though. Which of his feet was naturally stronger?
I really don’t know. He was world class with both feet, but I’m inclined to say left, despite the fact that his three iconic goals in the 1966 World Cup were all hammered in with his right. His goal against Mexico is a classic example. He moved the ball upfield, at speed, with the grace of a natural left-footer and then unleashed a thunderbolt with his right. He also started his England career as a left winger, before Ramsey’s wingless wonders, and in an era before anyone knew what ‘inverted’ meant, let alone used it to describe positions on a football field.
He was a simply fantastic player and by my reckoning he still holds the record for the most non-penalty goals for England (jointly with Wayne Rooney), despite starting out as an old style winger and spending most of his career in central midfield.
RIP Sir Robert

Why didn’t Charlton do anything for Sir Bobby Charlton yesterday, poor show if you ask me . Did anyone else think that the club should have honoured him .
