As a fan who traveled to Newport only to find 10 changes to the team that looked good against Orient. Did the EFL cup mean nothing to CAFC cause it felt like it. The opportunity to be drawn against a premier league club in the 2nd round is gone because of this Dean Holden decision . Fans don’t matter it seems. I’m so disappointed.

I have no idea what Holden's logic was for that side but this is why the fans have, virtually, given up on cup competitions. The club would always bang on about 'getting behind the team' for home Cup games but then the manager plays reserve players - the ones that you use to be able to watch for free with a season ticket.

Interestingly Methven and Rodwell were mixing with fans in pubs before the game which was a nice touch for those travelling but that is about it for those making a very expensive trip. Holden got this one wrong and yet again we take an unnecessary early exit from a cup competition.

Great turn out by teh fans cafcdamo and it deserved far more than the team selection and sub-standard performance deserved.

Last year was great, the trip to Old Trafford and the huge support we had there but as a competition it means nothing to me personally, for this season at least.
We have one job this year and that is getting out of this poxy league!

It seems to be common and if you look all the primary League One clubs chasing promotion that were playing League Two clubs failed apart from Peterborough who won only on penalties.
Firstly, there seems a need to give squad players game time, and these games are used for that, and also seems to be used to assess their ability to step up.
Of course nobody in League One expects their team to win the cup, but one might have a run like we had last season which leads to a money-gaining game at Old Trafford, albeit we got beaten there 3-0. But then last season we finished mid-table. And it's something your team does only once in a while. Or twice if you're Bradford City (2013 in the EFL Cup and 2015 in the FA Cup) but look at where they are now.

I suspect the decision to make ten changes was entirely down to Dean Holden rather than CAFC’s management or the owners. I completely agree it was disappointing and I also think it was a major error. There are lots of good reasons why taking each of the three cups we compete in seriously makes sense. It will be interesting to see how we approach the EFL Trophy and then the FA Cup. In Charlie Methven’s first season at Sunderland, the club made the final of the EFL Trophy, played at Wembley in front of a crowed of 85,000. Methven will know the value of that experience and the trade offs involved. It would be interesting to know what he thinks about how Charlton should approach that competition. Either way, how to approach it should not be a decision taken by the head coach alone

Either way, how to approach it should not be a decision taken by the head coach alone I agree with this 100%. I don't think I would have made ten changes. Having said that, had we won the game it would have been a box ticked, more minutes in more players, and an opportunity to have a better look at some of the fringe players in the squad. The League Cup is a real competition whereas I don't feel like the EFL Trophy is. I'm not sire I'm convinced that players should be 'awarded' first team recognition when we are playing U21 sides from the Premier League clubs. However, as there is a day out at Wembley available I have been increasingly frustrated that we, as a club, have not taken this seriously in the past. I was furious when we failed to beat Hartlepool in the quarter-final in January last year. Our season was, as good, as over and there was a chance for a big day out and it felt like our season finished that day. Ignoring the money available, and the fact that there shouldn't be many sides we cant beat (particularly as it split into North and South until the last eight) football is about trying to win things. I live in hope but I, seriously, doubt that Charlton will make it to an FA or League Cup final in my lifetime. The EFL Trophy is much more possible, and we could, even, win it. Having said that, it is a long time since I've attended am EFL Trophy match, but if we put out a full side, especially in the knockout rounds, I might be tempted to go.

Either way, how to approach it should not be a decision taken by the head coach alone I think the plan is that Charlie Methven is not going to interfere at all in the football side of things, thus not question the strategy of playing a lot of "squad" players in a game like this.

While trying to put together my ideal side for Tuesday's EFL Trophy, I looked at our squad and staggered to find Charlie Kirk is still in the building but not even getting splinters since Mapples arrived. He is with us for nearly three more years on wages in excess of £5k pw. WTF? Incidentally I'd go with:-
AMB Asiimwe Abankwah Ness Bower Anderson Chin (in his proper position) Fraser Campbell (either) Tedic Ladapo
