How many weeks? Two, six, fifty?
Two things occur to me:
1) Should we be playing a load of plodders in friendlies if this is going to happen?
2) Is Miles (who missed a lot of last season) going to struggle with injuries and if so does that reduce his value when we come to sell him?

Can't remember who is was but one of "our main men" was badly injured against Welling a few seasons back.

Did I read it was a moody challenge that lead to the injury?

Sorry to be bringing bad news but I've just spoken to someone connected at Charlton and Leaburn could be out for months not weeks. Makes signing another striker a priority as we all know Aneke isn't fit.

Are any reserves ready to step up? Only Carey who's not yet 18 and is a smaller, different player. There was a rumour of Burstow coming back on loan. I think he'd be a better player since he left us and video goals look quite good. The big question would be whether he can do the hold up play or come deep to link with May. Perhaps an older head is needed. Ladapo? Of course we do have his younger bother, now 19, but he plays a bit like Kanu, coming in from wide.

They are quite similar in looks and style. Perhaps Ladapo is the Nigerian Smith. But sure they must be related in some way.

I’m sure this happens every pre season! So frustrating we lose key players before the season even starts.

A number of seasons we've started well, the transfer window has then shut, then we pick up injuries and have a terrible run.
Happened in both 2019-20 and 2020-21, causing us in the first season to drop into the relegation contenders and eventually go down, in the second season to have a terrible run of form which in the end cost us a playoff place.
2019-20, the squad they put together on Roland's meagre budget was capable of a safe mid-table placing until the injuries hit, plus the lack of "luck" or whatever in conceding so many late stoppage-time goals, plus the issues after the Covid break leading to 2 of our players and refusing to play and even then, Brentford crumbling against Barnsley on the final game, but of course the takeover by the fake sheikh and Southall combined with the recall of Gallagher all added up.

Wiw that final paragraph which is also the final sentence was one long tale of woe. But it’s all water under the bridge and we can only hope that a pro SMT backed financially will help produce a far improved outcome. Injuries and certain other factors will involve lady luck which is true for all of our competitors. The key is the quality of management and the correct funding model and I’m hopeful that we will be well served under the new ownership.

The relegation in 2020 was much more painful than the one in 2009 or 2016 because in those previous seasons we were hopeless and always set to go down. In 2020 we were so close to staying up.
And then this campaign in League One has been worse than both the other two. But I felt in those two runs the standard in this division was far lower than it has been in the past 2 seasons.

Sorry was meant to say I have it on extremely good authority his injury isn’t as bad as it was made out. He just needed a rest.
Hopefully he’ll be back at the start of the season.

Beginning to end of first week of August is what I was told but still need a very good striker in regardless. Great that Leaburn will be back earlier than expected. As for recruiting another striker, much depends upon whether Holden and Scott are looking at 4-3-3 or 3-5-2 as the main formation. Many have stated we have a decent spine from two keepers to centre backs etc. But no wing backs and no replacement for Rak-Sakyi as yet. Most of us agree we need five or six more decent additions but opinions vary on positions. If we can get 30+ games out of Leaburn that will be way more than last season when Garner's preference Stockley and then injury reduced his exposure.

I’m still fuming about the challenge that nobbled Leaburn. I know it’s part of the game and I’ve definitely done worse but that was a proper dog move on that Welling players part. I’d even pull the friendly next season as a result.

I just hope he is not rushed back and overplayed and then breaks down again, as it’s concerning that after all this time that now replacement has been brought in.
Leaburn is going to have to be eased back gently and also hope that we don’t squander further points in doing so.

Why the hell is he not in the England U21 squad, which is full of non-scoring, non-playing strikers who nobody has heard of.
