Just watching the Ashes and, as always, finding it hugely entertaining. It got me thinking about the best regular sporting contests, away from football.
The Ashes would definitely be right up there for me in terms of my favourites, along with the Ryder Cup.

I've got Tour de France on the telly and Ashes on the radio and ball by ball websites. The Yates twins yesterday and Stokes today...

NFL playoffs and Super Bowl (The regular season is good too, but the pressure of the playoffs tops it that little bit)

Agree with the Ryder Cup. The pressure is so intense when down to the singles.

I'm going with the Tour of Flanders (Ronde van Vlaanderen), 1 of the 5 monuments in cycling. I know Paris-Roubaix is more known abroad, but it's mostly Belgians along the parcours there.
The Tour of Flanders is something unique, there is no other 1-day cycling race in the world that even comes close in terms of how everyone looks forward to it, the rivalries, the history, 1m people along the parcours, the roaring crowd when the riders approach one of the many hills/cobblestones ... Probably also the most honest race: luck is way less of a factor than in Paris-Roubaix, and you can't hide. The best one usually wins.
I might be a bit preoccupied, since it's in the region where I grew up and still live (Flemish Ardennes), but if you ever get the chance to follow the race with someone from the region along the parcours, don't hesitate. Doesn't matter if you are into cycling or not.

The six nations for me. Short and sweet but you never know who will win it. Yes, there are favorites but all it takes is one injury or bad performance to blow the whole thing apart.

I'd bet he holes out on a big shot more often than a nick to keeper or slips. Have I put kiss of death on him?
