Charlton Athletic’s Director of Football Steve Gallen is now a contender to replace Les Ferdinand at QPR, reports West London Sport. Huge opportunity for him being well known there. Hopefully for Steve they won't ask to see his CV! 😄 Being serious it would be a good move for him because im not sure where he would fit into the new structure given that the new owners would have their own ideas going forward.

I don't think Gallen has been our issue personally. I think he's had his hand tied behind his back for a lot of his time here so far. Plus other influences, like COVID, transfer embargo, EFL enforced budgets for a season, etc.

If you discount any signings since Sandgaard arrived, and allowed his son to select players based on a set of data that the hard shot taker put together, Gallen's record is not too bad. Cleary no one gets all the decisions correct, all the time, but since he arrived in April 2017 the club finished 6th, 3rd (and won playoffs) third from bottom in the Championship with a, recognised, small budget and 7th in League One. It's since Martin Sandgaard has been identifying players that the club has spent millions of pounds on players that haven't been able to get us above mid-table in the third division.

He has been part of a team that has brought in some complete turkeys especially the chasing of Bonne over 2 transfer windows which was plainly embarrassing How about a new concept where by we go out and head hunt a recruitment person who has a proven track record of success, now that would be a novel idea 👍

We all know that the SMT underperformed budget under Sandgaard as there was a top six budget in place. But it's very hard to apportion individual blame for specific signings. Similarly many fans critical Duchatelet throughout 2014-2019 but collectively the SMT delivered promotion via the play-offs. A good mix of seasoned pros, Academy players and EPL loans took us up a level from when Robinson and Meire left us early 2018. Suspect that Gallen will know is job is at risk - he knows the precise flavour of dealings last January and can assess his position now that he knows things are changing. Nobody expects perfect execution every window. But we should expect our club back in the top six ASAP given than many third tier clubs only have a 2M budget or less.

Who would we replace SG with?. We wouldn't. If he left the new owners would obviously bring in their own man.

Probably bit unfair as don’t really know what budget he had to work with but he did sign some shit players considering we kept hearing top six spenders in the league

Who would we replace SG with?. A professional recruitment person with a proven track record of success….….. Somebody who has a proven track record is Ben Chorley who if you recall was appointed director of football at Swindon Town in 2021 and after bringing in something like 12 players within two weeks shortly before the start of that season, they made it to the play-offs. He resigned from his role in May 2022 and I thought he might be Charlton bound to reunite with Garner but as far as I know he didn't return to the game which is a big surprise. Well worth an inquiry in my opinion as he knows the game inside out and clearly has a lot to offer.

Yep Chorley is a great shout….or Boltons or Plymouths head of recruitment as both have done wonders with the budget they have had…… unlike ours sadly

I think it would be a good move for both parties, as I am sure he must have been worn down, by past and present owners shenanigans, including working with hard shot Sandgaard.

Do we know yet if he is leaving us as part of the new SMT? I would say that's a certainty. I have been told he's already gone but not had that confirmed.

Left two weeks ago.
I'll always credit him for the signings of Cullen and Bielik, two of the best players ever to play for the club but sadly the rest were dire and that was down to him.
I think he mismanged several budgets he was given, even if they were not what TS said they were.
I think staying and working with Martin Sandgaard was below him if Im honest and he must have wanted out for some time but there is a reason that the job offers didn't exactly come flowing in.

Couple of rumours about Chris Powell possibly coming in as DOF, given he just resigned as Spurs head of academy coaching.
Great connections, never done the role before. Might be a whole load of nothing, mind you.

Thanks for all the efforts Steve! Don’t think you can knock him too much with the ownerships (ego’s as well), budgets and economic challenges he’s had to work under. Good luck!

I would like to see Curbs in some kind of ambassador role too.

Might be a whole load of nothing, mind you. Andrew Scott is the Technical Director which equates to DoF. As we all saw he was in post for seven weeks from Christmas 2022 to Mid-February when Sandgaard pulled the plug on the initial takeover bid. The SMT today is the same today as it was back then... and they had seven weeks, including a window, to observe and plan their actions once the takeover complete. It was always unlikely that Gallen was to survive the takeover. And unlikely Powell comes in as anything except an ambassador. They've stated that they're looking for a director of performance so as to improve the sports science. We'll have to wait and see, plus watch for any changes in the coaching personnel.

Whilst I agree with this, I know the feeling when you watch people come and go into your company. He probably thought they wouldn’t last, which they didn’t. Wish him all the best.
