We have not had anybody as good as him since he left.
After retiring from playing Chapple took up coaching roles at Peterborough United and West Ham United before becoming chief scout back at The Valley. After a brief spell at Fulham, Chapple was appointed European scout at Brighton & Hove Albion. In September 2019 Chapple joined Stoke City as head of first-team recruitment where he again linked up with Nathan Jones who he had worked with not only at Charlton but also at Brighton. Phil left Stoke in February 2020 when Jones was sacked at Stoke and new boss Michael O'Neill brought in his own staff.
I would love to see him back with us but would he come bacj as I understand he was treated poorly the last time around?
The last time he was with us in that position though he was reporting to Curbs!!

Must say I don’t know anything about his poor treatment when he left or by whom at the club.
I guess if he were to return it would depend somewhat on whether whoever it was that treated him badly remains at the club.

Chapple left Charlton in September 2015 - on Katrien Meire's watch. When Meire, Murray and Duchatelet were Directors at the Club.
According to Chicago Addick, Chapple refused an interview shortly before he left; not wishing to discuss the players recruited in the summer of 2015.
By Christmas of that year as we all remember, Charlton were effectively relegated.
Chances are, whoever Chapple had unresolvable difference with back in 2015 is no longer in the position they held at that time.

This thread was created two years ago and I have revisited it in the hope that Nathan Jones insists on our former player Phil Chapple becoming Head of Recruitment Analysis. Nathan has already brought in his wing men from clubs they were previously at together and I hope for all our sakes that Phil becomes the next. Phil was Nathan's Head of Scouting Operations at Luton and they previously worked together at Charlton along with Paul Hart. Let's fuck off all of this technical bollocks and get proper football men I who know what they are doing. Scott has an ego with nothing to back it up with while Phil has a proven track record in scouting players who have been purchased for a fraction of what Scott has blown.

Am I right in thinking Chapple was recommending decent players to Roland/Mier but was just ignored?. We probably wouldn't be in the mess we are now had we kept him in charge of the scouting system.

reamsofverse have you considered applying to be the chief scout? Nope wouldb't go bear it. I've recommended six very good players to Scott this season, four from L2, all better than the shit we have and while I got told 'we'll have a look' or 'I know him', nothing has materialised. I'm talking players like Louis Barry, Keillor Dunn-Davis, Dan Kemp and Jake Young. Moxon and Scott Banks during the summer too.

I'd hope you'd be introducing them to Nathan Jones, but I know nothing about football and I don't know what your actual knowledge is to be able to look at specific things in a player that someone more football aware would notice and someone who is not would not. Andy Scott's role, if any, would be working out contract terms as well as giving the go-ahead with regards to transfer fees, i.e. working out the budgeting side of things. My only connection with professional football is that my cousin was co-owner and chairman of a league club for a while but I never talk to him about any of the detail of that.

Scouting was what I did as part of my job many moons ago. Have every faith in my ability. Have no issue recommending players. Right side of the page I put what they could do with the ball but it's what they did without it that you watch just as closely.

Curbs and Brownie always speak very highly of Chapple in that role including just recently but for me it was when he himself was a CAFCtv studio guest about a year or two ago that impressed me so much. He speaks very well and I thought at the time, "get this guy back"!

I'm not one to advocate rehiring 'historical' Charlton figures (because "they get us" and suchlike) but given a choice between Phil Chapple or Andy Crapall who wouldn't choose the former?

He could always double up as the leader at the back that Scott failed to sign in the last window I am sure even at his age he could defend a long throw better than our current 3 centre backs

My mate always used to have a fiver on Chapple being first scorer. Won a good few quid, he was great in the air at set pieces and corners
