Let's hope there is no clawback on this one. Must have something if Chelsea have given him a four year deal.

Awesome. We needed a LB and sounds like he’s quite versatile. Good signing. Hope he does well!

Hope Chelsea don’t act like tossers again or that that their behaviour from before has been factored into the commercial arrangements for this deal.
That said, none of that is this lads fault and he gets my support

That said, none of that is this lads fault and he gets my support I don’t like to say it but with all the injuries Conor was flogged physically as he played in every league game when not suspended. Prem clubs don’t like it when loanees are rarely selected but then again they don’t want their asset run into the ground by being overplayed. But Prem teams are generally happy to trust their young talent to us

Sadly, there’s no evidence whatsoever that Premier League clubs are any happier to trust their young players to us than they are other clubs and no reason to believe that might be true. Conor Gallagher was moved to Swansea because they played ‘better, passing football’ than us and Chelsea thought that would be better for his development.

Conor Gallagher was moved to Swansea because they played ‘better, passing football’ than us and Chelsea thought that would be better for his development. I would imagine that the London clubs would like the fact that they can watch their players train and plan without a long drive if they are with us but other than that it’s all about the money. The money the loan fees and the increase in value of the players that they are, almost certainly, never going to play - just sell on for maximum profit.

Quite excited about this signing, mostly because of the standards DaSilva and Gallagher have hit. Also, no disrespect to Purrington, but I think left back was the weakest point in our team along with centre forward.

Bit petulant from Maatsen at the end there pushing the Ipswich lad twice his size but who thinks it was deliberate to get his one game suspension out of the way. There was Three seconds left when it happened!!

The Ipswich player should of been booked for pushing Maatsen over.

Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer is not disappointed at Ian Maatsen picking up a suspension – admitting the Chelsea youngster needed a break.
The young Dutch left-back collected his fifth caution of the League One campaign in today’s 2-0 win at Ipswich and will sit out the visit of Milton Keynes on Wednesday night.
Bowyer confirmed that Ben Purrington will replace him for the match in SE7.
“Ben will come in,” said the Addicks chief. “When he came off the bench here he did really well – defended the far post really well.
“He [Maatsen] probably needed a little rest, if I’m honest. I spoke to someone at Chelsea earlier on in the week and said I’m going to drop him out here and there, because he is 18 years old and I don’t want to burn him out.
“He’s a young kid learning the game, so now probably the suspension will do him well.”
Charlton are third in the League One table and can go above second-placed Peterborough if they were to win their game in hand.
“We’re moving in the right direction,” said Bowyer. “There’s a long way to go. I’m looking forward to Wednesday’s game now – get back home.
“I just feel like we’ve been on the road and not been at our place for a while now. It will be great to be there with some of the fans.”

Looks like Maatsen is going on loan to Coventry next season will be interesting to see how well he does in the championship.

Looks like Maatsen is going on loan to Coventry next season will be interesting to see how well he does in the championship. That’s very interesting. I think the ‘passing team’ comment is potentially significant. It’s not surprising that when Premier League teams loan out their young players for development they’re interested in how the destination club plays and how they’ll use the loanee. I wonder how that will impact us? Chelsea continue to use and abuse the loan system in my view, hoarding players until they decide what to do with them. It’s ridiculous that Conor Gallagher might go out on loan for a third successive season and if he does end up at Leeds, Chelsea will benefit from him playing for one of the best coaches in the business, before selling him for tens of millions. They ought to be required pay Leeds a huge fee, not the other way around.

I didn't rate him at all; like Liam Millar (who has been moved on permanently), he will never get into the Chelsea first team. His decision making suggested a very poor football brain regardless of his obvious athleticism. Suspect Chelsea will maintain a relatively cheap option on him for another season (assume Coventry won't pay full wages) before letting him go.

He was just okay, in what was a very poor defense / average side. I'd rather someone who was a touch more physical and bigger. Felt like we had a very small team for large parts of last season.
I'd love a modern day Herman I won't lie.

According to reports we were told by Chelsea in June he would not be coming back to league one after we made an approach for him … I’m sure bexleyboy can defend himself, but I’d make two observations about his post above. First, it’s interesting in its own right, if true. For what it’s worth, I wasn’t that impressed by Maatsen so it’s a little disappointing that we’d planned to use him as one of our loan players. Second, there isn’t necessarily any contradiction between the post above and Bexley’s prior claims that Maatsen was returning. It’s entirely possible he only heard the ‘reports’ he referred to above yesterday. He might have known we’d made an approach in June, but only found out we’d been pushed back very recently. I tend to take almost all rumours with a big pinch of salt. In any event, the club does now appear to be a lot less leaky, which can only be a good thing.

Mundell I tend to take most rumours with a big pinch of salt…….especially those that tend to make it up as they go along to make out that they are in the know…..it’s always entertaining though when it all goes wrong……There are a very small group of posters on the other forum that have an small insight into actually what is going on recruitment wise and timings and they generally come through ok so I read these with more interest……people keep asking the same question to posters on here……where is your source?…..Well it bloody obvious, the rumours are cut and pasted from the other site and put on here…..and good stuff on here is cut and pasted onto the other site….you only have to read some of the stuff on the other site to know where the rumours arrive from on here…..it is what it is….
