Charlton have secured the signing of highly-rated right-back Chris Gunter on a two-year deal, with the option of a third year.

It's a good signing, reminiscent of when Charlton signed Mark Bowen and that season turned out fine.
Understand Matthews is no longer training with the club, be interesting to see where he ends up.

97 caps - why would he drop a division ?
It certainly isn't for the money or fame !

Chris signing might give Williams a bit of a kick up the arse now.

Positive news. An interesting and perhaps even a revealing signing. Three quick observations.
1. This looks to me like a ‘let’s win promotion this season’ signing, not a ‘let’s consolidate and build for next season’ decision.
2. This tells us something about the type of player Bowyer prefers to sign and about what he thinks is missing. More Darren Pratley than Macauley Bonne or Tariq Fosu.
3. Wouldn’t mind betting that Gunther is on a substantial promotion bonus - into six figures. Deals with the salary cap constraint, it’s a signal of intent and it perhaps says to Gunther ‘I want you to help get the best out of other players’.
Time will tell.

My mate is a Reading season ticket holder. His assessment:
Solid Little slow going forward Huge tendency to back pass Low error rate

Long awaited signing of an established Right Back which will lead to an immediate improvement in the next first XI without doubt
As before, some talk of another five or six but unless some of the midfielders leave there simply isn't the headroom on the salary cap to pay more than three or four further additions.
For example, if the likes of Cullen were on £500K at West Ham then we might have paid 40-50% of that or £4-5K per week. We have approximately £10-15K per week left of headroom in the salary cap. One way round this might be a block deal for several loans from one club?
Naturally, none of us have real insight into how Covid-19 and the salary cap are affecting the market right now but it won't be easy to land ALL the players we need. However we should definitely be in a place to send out a decent first XI in ten days time.

Players need to know that during their lifetime they may have a peak time when they make a large amount, but that won't last, and in the years that follow, they need to continue to work for a lesser amount.
I have had that in my software development career which had ups and downs especially as I spent a large amount of time as a contractor and that went dead around 2001 for a few years, certainly in the manner it had been before.
2k a week is less than I made in many of my contracts (assuming I worked all 5 days, my daily rate was sometimes £400, sometimes higher and sometimes lower, towards the end it was usually around the £450-£480 mark), however that's not really the point, because what you were making last year becomes irrelevant, it's all a matter of accumulating what you can during your working years, and managing it well, putting more into a pension when you are earning more.
Football players, just like software contractors, have to also know that long periods out of a job make it far harder to get a new one. Playing competitively in League One is better than not playing.

Good quality singing, welcome Chris.
I liked Mathews, but I’m glad we didn’t hang around waiting for him to decide if he wanted to play for us.

A good experienced higher level right back who IMO will bring about a more solid defence. All we need now is another CB and LB and two strikers of course. Welcome to CAFC Chris.

However we should definitely be in a place to send out a decent first XI in ten days time. As the primary driver for the Premier League clubs is that their players get playing time they might have to subsidise more of their wages if they want clubs to take them this season. I know that money is always a driver but if the clubs just have no headroom they won't be able to pay more, even if they wanted to. For that reason we might find that we will be able to secure top players (like Cullen, Bielik and, at a pinch Gallagher) for the divisional average wage. If I were Chelsea and the young players were not going to get a game otherwise I'd rather lend them to Lee Boywer for free than have them playing youth games.

Amazed Gunter signing has had only 21 responses! So many are unsure of what's happening and many forget the basics that the side is the first XI plus three subs brought on in the second half. So far in defence we've had a change of keeper, Famewo replacing Sarr, Pratley at centre half and Oshilajs covering at right back. And Purrington back as first choice left back plus Barker playing a few games. Hard to tell without seeing a few games with Gunter but are we now good with the back 5? The front six is a different discussion, probably worthy of a separate thread?

Very good signing but we sort of knew it was coming. I like the 'out of the blue' signings. However i think we are showing our intent with someone of Gunters experience. But the attack is where we need to focus our business. Goals win games.
