Jonjo Shelvey has admitted the lure of learning his trade was the reason he stayed at Charlton Athletic this summer.
“I’ve never wanted to leave Charlton,” the 17-year-old told the South London Press.
“Towards the end of the transfer window there was a chance that I could have gone to Birmingham or Stoke but I didn’t want to go to either of those places and play reserve football. That’s all I would have done.
"I wanted to stay here and play in the first team. That will give me the experience I need and provide me with a platform to build on.
“In time I think I would have got in the first team at those clubs but I wouldn’t have walked straight into the team.”

Very true, but from what I've seen over the last four games, a spell on the bench might help his learning curve.

Very true, but from what I've seen over the last four games, a spell on the bench might help his learning curve. Too true! The lad has defo lost a bit of his shine but that's not to be unexpected when playing every game at his age. Thing is, a poor form Shelvey is still perhaps better than what we've got that could come in for him. Some of the old pro's in this league can get to fook with his head during a game, winding him up and what not and get him sent off. Still a young hot head on very talented shoulders!
