Perhaps this was not a well known fact but there was an informal gesture for every home game through the Gliksten era and carried on by Hulyer that Military Personnel in Woolwich (I think from the Barracks at the top of Frances St/Wellington St) were allocated upto 200 free tickets. Also the hospital which is now the QE2 on Woolwich Common was exclusively a military hospital was actually where CAFC players were often treated for operations by the military surgeons as recent as the 70's and early 80's. I know that Terry Naylor had a broken leg fixed there.
So a relationship between CAFC and the local Military goes back a long way (and so it should) but pretty sure when the club moved out of the Valley this was lost and of course when the Ministry of Defence closed down the hosptital and handed it over to the NHS.
Now recent history of the club is more devoted to townships in Soweto! This of course is far more newsworthy for the PC brigade than any acknowledgement that as a club from Woolwich we are the centre a military town going back hundreds of years. This PC crap is one of my pet hates with Murray as to the direction he has taken the club. If you want tradition at CAFC then touches like the one mentioned here are the ones we should acknowledge and be proud of...let the Man U's of this world handle the other PC rubbish!
