The cack handed way that the club has handled our away allocation for Reading should surely give the club pause for thought. The drummer & his pals have missed out on tickets for this one, seemingly at the expense of the Home Counties day trippers who have 3,000 Valley Gold points. This is plain wrong - and stupid. I don’t know the drummer personally, although I briefly spoke to him at Barnsley on Saturday. But what I do know is that over the previous three seasons, at places like Fleetwood and Accrington and Shrewsbury, him and his mates have been there week in, week out, at great expense, creating a terrific atmosphere & lifting the team. It cannot be beyond the wit of man - and Tony Keohane - to devise a loyalty points system at Charlton whereby you get extra points if you do make the trips to the Rochdales and Oldhams, like they do. We took 778 to Barnsley last Saturday, yet out of nowhere we quickly sell 2,200 for Reading. Judging by many of the comments on Charlton Twitter, a lot of these Reading day trippers will be attending their only away game of the season. I suspect the drummer & his mates will be back with us for the slightly more daunting visit to Millwall coming up, but the club should be rewarding and incentivising away day loyalty, rather than for looking at ways to piss these fans off. We need them. Why have they not got tickets Royston..? I’m not sure it’s easy to understand from your post... I think the system is shit as I stated on the Reading away thread , but the tickets were on sale for over 7 days and were on general sale for 8 hours on Tuesday , have they all been abroad and away from internet connection...? Do they not use this forum or Charlton Life where there have been threads where everyone (bar elfie) said we would sell out and kept readers updated on how many tickets were remaining...? Unless we have 2 drummers there is a drummer at home games every week , this guy at least must of been eligible on Thursday the worst way , even if his mates interchange on a weekly basis and they have less than the required 100 points then they were able to purchase for 8 hours on Monday... I think that calling our fans “day trippers” is very condescending , we have sold 2k tickets , unless you were under a rock and wasn’t aware we sold 37k for Wembley , I’d suggest that 2k tickets for any match local could be under threat of selling out , even you yourself said it would definitely sell out a week before it did actually sell out.. The drummer is great , I sit close to him at home games , and it will be a shame if he’s not at Reading but if you are seriously saying that he and his mates don’t have themselves partly to blame for not being aware tickets were on sale and purchasing them , and that it’s the fault of Charlton fans who possibly through work ,family commitments and money reasons can’t make fortnightly away trips , is a poor show on your part imo. How many aways do you attend a season?

It’s not all about Valley Gold.. between some phases there were only 5 hours.. there must be other reasons why certain fans didn’t get a ticket.. How many aways do you attend a season?

All that is needed is a points system, PURELY based on away games attended. Afterwards Season Ticket holders then Valley Gold. Simples. ..... simples, but entirely unreasonable. I’ll bet there isn’t another club on the planet that operates the way you describe. All clubs want to incentivise fans to buy season tickets ..... How many aways do you attend a season?

It’s quite a simple system as it is. 1. You buy a season ticket you are rewarded with priority for away games and cup games throughout the season. 2. You pay into Valley Gold you are awarded with priority as you are financing the development of the next crop of youngsters to come through our academy. 3. You buy home tickets on a game by game basis ( thus supporting our club) you get 10 loyalty points per game if bought early or 5 if on match day giving priority over general public. 4. You only go to away games the club gets 5% of the sale price which hardly goes into the cost of running the club and paying wages.. However you get 10 loyalty points as a recognition of travelling away. A system to reward those who SUPPORT the club. Extremely simples in my opinion. How many aways do you attend a season?

The ones who show commitment to attending the aways should come first. No, ones who buy season tickets and or Valley Gold should come first as they make the major contribution to the club. In fact those who do both and travel away are the first priority like it or loathe it, it seems logical. I am a season ticket holder and go to some away games, but not Valley Gold, and I could have bought last week it seems, although had no problem on Monday. I'm no fan of RD although you and RV try to pretend I am, but I can't see why he would prioritise protesters over fans who buy Season tickets. I wouldn't. How many aways do you attend a season?

Very disappointed that you think this is a “top post” lardiman , expected it from Royston’s little follower Elfin... A proper football Club would give a little extra help to those fans who travel any distance at any expense to support the team. Especially somebody like the drummer and his mates. The drummer wouldn't have to "take it up with the Club" as somebody put it. A representative of the Club would have been in touch with him. But that's never going to happen while people like Keohane are running things for Duchatelet.

They went on general sale Tuesday , if work was a problem he had Monday night , all weekend , because I’m sure as you are that he has a season ticket or equivalent number of points.... Also my wife (day tripper) has just expressed how proud of me she is , that I didn’t cry or stamp my feet when I didn’t get any Coldplay tickets recently , although I’ve seen them multiple times including travelling to Austria , there was undoubtedly ‘ NEW’ fans of Coldplay at these gigs , that doesn’t seem fair she said... I just told her everyone has as much right to watch them as I do , some paid more money some didn’t snooze , I blame myself not the system...!!

Season ticket holders are not 'once a year fans' How many aways do you attend a season? In the last few years roughly 4 or 5. Season ticket holder since 1986 used to attend almost every away game until the birth of my Daughter. She now attends more away games than I do. Valley Gold since it started in case you need additional information. Thanks for asking although I'm not sure why my attendance is relevant to the conversation.

..... simples, but entirely unreasonable. I’ll bet there isn’t another club on the planet that operates the way you describe. All clubs want to incentivise fans to buy season tickets ..... Disagree. Away game regulars travelling all over the country should get 2nd shout on once a year fans. Is that what you're saying? No, that’s not what I’m saying. You won’t like this, but it’s completely normal for a ‘business’ to reward its most valuable ‘customers’. Value in this context means revenues from season ticket sales, and other match day income, and Valley Gold. Season ticket holders are more ‘valuable’ to the club than fans that attend away games. That’s not, in any way, to denigrate the time and effort expended by away fans, or the value of the support they give the team, but it is nevertheless a reality. I made the point that this reality is not unique to Charlton and note you didn’t disagree with that. In any event, what puzzles me about this debate is that there is an implication that many fans travel regularly to watch the team away, ‘spending hundreds of pounds’, and yet don’t have a season ticket, which would be a fraction of the cost. If they had a season ticket I doubt they’d miss out on tickets for popular away fixtures. I find this curious. All that having been said, I don’t see why it’s sometimes possible for VG season ticket holders to buy multiple tickets (typically four) for popular matches. That does seem to be unfair. However, that’s a practice that predates this ‘regime’.

I've been a season ticket holder for 20 years and in that time probably only been to ten away games.
Personally I've got no issue with regular away fans being given priority over me for tickets, so long as I continue to get first refusal on all games played at the Valley (play off semis, big cup games, etc.).

I don’t see how the drummer hasn’t been able to get tickets. Surely he is a season ticket holder and goes to away games? I fell into phase 6 and easily got some. There were plenty that went into phase 7 & 8 as I kept an eye on it for a friend.
All this ‘day tripper’ nonsense also gets my back up. I work shifts, which as many shift workers know includes the vast majority of weekends. I go home/away when I can so if that means I go to 2 away games in a season , so be it. It also falls to expense , not everyone can afford to go the other end of the country for a day / over night stay. Reading is a short trip in comparison to say Middlesbrough on 7th December.
I do agree though the current system needs revamping but it’s the one they use at the minute.

The drummer not getting a Reading ticket sums up the problem - it shouldn’t happen & shows the current system doesn’t work.
A system should reward loyalty in terms of buying tickets, not paying a tenner a month for Valley Gold.
If you take your family to an away game by train up North you are looking at well in excess of £200 for an afternoon - that should be recognised and rewarded in the allocation system, which it currently isn’t.
The “day tripper” comment is justified because none of the “I’m taking my Great Uncle Godfrey to Reading” brigade will be seen at Millwall away being kept in for an hour after the match.
Priority for away tickets -
1. Regular away attendees 2. ST holders 3. VG Members

So I had a look at Forest and Reading websites. Reading prioritise season ticket holders over all other fans (including those who buy an "away" membership). Reading allocate tickets using a point system which is virtually the same as Charlton's.
Forest also sell an away membership (£35 for a new application/£30 for a renewal) which gives you priority over season ticket holders. However Season ticket holders appear to get priority on away membership too. The number of away memberships appears to be limited too.
I don't think any system works perfectly and there will always be winners and losers but I also think we are in a unique situation because we have a large group of fans who refuse to support the team at home (for whatever reason) but want to support away. The majority of clubs will have an away support who are primarily season ticket holders (as most of ours probably would have been pre-roland).

Seems like it would be a much easier solution for those fans who want to go to every away game, rather than having to go through this process every time.

VG Members Royston, the flaw in your plan is that CAFC receive less than 10% of the £200 you are spending in one afternoon whereas they receive 100% of the £120 that a VG member puts into the club in a year.
The headline spending figures don't reflect the value that club actually receive.
And you don't take into account ST holders who are also VG which means they are investing at least £500 a year in the club itself.

I have not been to a home game for the last two seasons, and will not be attending another until the Belgian has gone.
The prize you get is a cuddly toy.

I would definitely buy an away ST, and I think we would sell 700-800 more as well. It would also negate the emotional blackmail that Valley Gold has become under this owner. Fans are basically fattening the calf before Duchâtelet sells it at the market.

This Club certainly doesn't. That's what this thread is about. Meaning none Meaning you don't know and neither do I. But whereas I'm willing to admit I don't know, you are certain it is none despite not knowing that any more than I do. Charlton fans owe no loyalty or gratitude to Duchatelet and his inner circle of bunglers, toadies and liars. Everything good about our Club right now is wholly due to the hard work of Lee Bowyer and his support staff, and the players he has recruited. They deserve all the support they can get, so I am pleased to hear the Reading game has sold out its allocation. I hope the 'once a season' away fans show their loyalty and devotion to LB and the team as vocally as the away veterans who travel hundreds of miles dozens of times a season undoubtedly will.

This is a tactic that you use a lot sardonic ..whether it be player sales of anything else owner-related. Duchatelet can’t be that bad after all because X, Y and Z behave in a similar way. Try and raise your sights mate. Charlton used to be an exemplar in how they treated their fans...”a mutual respect” as Lee Bowyer has described it.
